Achieving growth, together. Our mission is to deliver value-adding products and services to the agricultural and related industries and to the communities in which we operate.

TWK RADIUS

The other day an eight-year-old told me how time flies and that he does not get any time to do the things he wants to do. Off course I was a little shocked that a child could sound exactly like a grown up, with grown up problems, but my only reaction was, “yes, I know how you feel, same here.”

But then my mind drifted off as I remembered how wonderful boredom used to be. I can still remember boredom when I was eight, how slow the

time seemed to pass, minutes really felt like hours and hours felt like never-ending days especially before my birthday or during school holidays. How sweet and great it actually was to just be bored, the possibilities of being bored, the fantastic ideas that stemmed from being bored (my mother would disagree), the element of surprise, the creativity! Why isn’t anyone bored anymore? It seems so idyllic now…

When did we get this busy? Do you sometimes find that the ‘busier’ you get, the less productive you are? It is because our minds need to get ‘off track’ sometimes, and by that, I mean that our brains actually need to get time to stare into space and wonder in order for it to recharge and

effectively cope with stress and to have exceptional problem-solving skills.

While the seasons are changing and we’re all shifting gears, why not set aside some time to be bored. To be quiet and wait on the possibilities of giving your mind time to wander, without your distractions (social media)... to just be. You see boredom is not a reflection of being unproductive or lazy and if used right, could give you the creative momentum you need for the rest of the year. See it as an investment.

The Middelburg branch stretches over 2185 square feet. This giant building stands rock solid on the corner of Boncker and Weeber road in the industrial outskirts of Middelburg. Here you will find the locals to be friendly, mostly reserved to boast about their town, saying that there is not much to do or see in Middelburg but the more time I spend in Middelburg the more I discovered quite the opposite.

M

iddelburg is a large farming and industrial town in Mpumalanga. Its name was established as Nasareth, (root from dry land), in 1864 by the Voortrekkers on the

banks of the Klein Olifants River. The name was changed in 1872 to Middelburg to mark its location between the Transvaal capital Pretoria, and the gold mining town of Lydenburg.

Middelburg is about an hour and a half from Pretoria, which makes this town quite ideal, it has a countryside feeling but is close enough to the city to soothe the need for all the modern luxuries. The town is also situated conveniently close to one of the main routes towards the Kruger National Park, and has a small but growing tourism industry.

The TWK branch in Middelburg is lively with farmers’ trucks pulling in and out of the driveway throughout the day. A sense of nostalgia hits one as you enter through the front door.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on it,

whether it is the vintage shelving, product placing or the warmhearted people, it reminded me of a simpler, more authentic time when one was not visually bombarded by choices.

The branch manager, Bertus Geel joined TWK in the spare parts department in 2007 and is branch manager since 2015. Bertus has always been active in agriculture and he says:” I enjoy working with farmers, the Co-op was part of my childhood. If you've been working in a certain place for a while, the farmers know you; you walk a path with them.” That is what he loves the most, aiding farmers on a day to day basis.

There are seventeen employees at the Middelburg branch which offers a large variety of products that cater for the different

The TWK Middelburg branch was opened on 22 September 2006. Ernest Raath (Regional Marketing Manager) was the first branch manager.

Anton Lombaard (Branch Manager: Vryheid) handled the parts and David Human (now at Zoetis marketing) handled the animal healthcare in the branch. Jana Lombard and Nastia de Bruin were the cashiers and Tertia Bosch was in charge of admin. Gert Senekal kept an eye on everything making sure everything went according to plan. And Oom Piet Voges was the Marketer and made sure TWK Middelburg became well known in the farming and agriculture communities. In 2008 Ernest left the Middelburg branch for Kokstad and Johan Greeff (Procurement Manager: Retail) took over as branch manager until December 2010.

activities, such as coal and transport, provided much of the employment and largely drove the economy of the town, although other sectors, such as agriculture, have gradually grown to be important. Hundreds of expatriates and their families, mostly from the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, moved into the town in the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s to avoid the slump of the post-World War II industrial and manufacturing sectors in those countries. These families were attracted by the need for industrial expertise in the plants, and were often rewarded with company sponsored housing and discounted education.

TWK RADIUS SP 644 – a more rust tolerant alternative SP 644 is the programme’s first commercial wattle clone and it has been developed for its tolerance to rust and good growth potential. Currently there is only limited supply from some nurseries as they are still in the bulking-up phase of commercialisation, but you may be able to secure small amounts of this clone. This clone has been fast tracked to help farmers deal with heavy rust infestations, so although SP 644 has shown good early growth and rust tolerance, the trials are still very young (the oldest is only two years) and caution is advised when planting large blocks of this clone. Initially SP 644 shows a huge amount of promise

It has only recently been released to the programmes affiliated nurseries and remains at least a year off commercial production. FW 54 is a frost specialist and has been tested in some hard frost sites where the commercially available seedlings have been badly damaged and, in most cases, killed. This clone is also in its early phases of testing, so caution is advised, but with luck, improvements can also be expected.

Radius spoke to Lourens Holtzhausen, Factory/Production Manager at Protea Tyres, about the retreading process.

The retreading process Retreading is a re-manufacturing process for tyres that replaces the tread on worn tyres and gives it a second and in some cases, a third life if the casings are in a usable condition. Step 3: Buffing

A retreaded tyre commences its life as a worn out tyre. When the tread area is down to 2 to 3 mm or if it has been re-grooved earlier, or if your tyre has punctures and needs a repair. In these cases, an experienced technician will check and inspect the tyre to see whether it is in a condition to get retreaded.

Step 1: Receiving Tyres are received and clearly marked with the client information, in order for the customer to receive his own tyre back.

A buffing machine then removes excess remaining rubber from the casing and restores it to its ideal dimensions, preparing it for the new tread to be applied.

Step 4: Skiving

Step 8: Curing The curing-process permanently bonds the new tread to the worn-out casing. After the tyre is wrapped in an air-tight envelope, pressure and temperature are applied to transform the layer of uncured rubber into a final and irreversible elastic Here any superficial damages to the casing are carefully

Step 6: Tread Preparation (Rubber table) Step 9: Final inspection

A layer of uncured rubber, which is applied between the casing and the new tread, will ensure a permanent bond between the two after the curing process.

After finishing and final visual inspection, the tyre is approved for delivery and sales to customers. Tyres can be retreaded multiple times if the casing is in usable condition.

The British commander at the outset of the war, General Sir Redvers Buller, chose to divert the largest force to Natal in an attempt to break the siege. His task would be the most daunting of tasks as he would have to cross his army over the Tugela river and its fortress of a chain of mountains on the Northern (Boer) side of the river only twelve miles’ shy of Ladysmith.

One can only imagine the agonies that were suffered by the wounded. The 17-year-old ‘Boer’ Denys Reitz tells us that as darkness fell, there were only 60 ‘Boers’ left hiding behind the crest. By 21:00, he wrote that he was alone in front of Aloe Knoll and went in search of his commanding officer. His officer, Commandant Opperman, made the decision to retire for further orders from Louis Botha. So, the battle was over. But a great British victory was not to be.

42

Alex Thorneycroft who had been in action since 03:30, finally reached the end of his mental capacity and commanded a British retreat. His fellow Colonels begged to get approval from General Warren first and so the decision was taken to send a message to Headquarters via an oil lamp. The problem was, someone had forgotten the oil. And, so the senior officer prevailed and nearly 3000 British troops retreated off the hill whilst facing no opposition.

Legion tells us that in the early hours of the 25th, two ‘Boers’ climbed the hill to find the body of a dead brother. They found the summit empty barring the dead and wounded British. Bizarrely, Louis Botha’s’ men reclaimed Spioenkop and the battle goes down in history as a ‘Boer’ victory.

In true gentlemanly fashion, Botha allowed the British medical teams back onto the summit and with the usual hospitality, served them ‘koffie en beskuit’. The ‘Boers’ lost 59 men during the battle and another nine succumbed to wounds. The British figures claim 350 dead and over a 1000 wounded. Botha, however, had one of his Commandants do a body count and he numbered 650 British dead. Whichever way you look at it, it was a disaster for the British army in a battle where they had a 10 to 1 superiority in both men and artillery.

The fundamental difference was that both Buller and Warren were out Generalled by a 37 year old farmer from Ermelo called Louis Botha.

MY SMART LIFE Desirè du Plessis

TACKLING THE

BIG D

Financial freedom begins when you get out of debt

PART 1

Understanding the good and the bad.

The start of a new year can be rough. Especially if you overspent during the festive season and must now face the consequences. But even if you were responsible and kept things tight during the festivities, the harsh reality is that living costs are on the rise and that your disposable income (that is your pay after taxes) is under pressure.

Economists are warning consumers to tighten their belts as 2019 will be a tough year. A stagnant economy and increases in a number of key living costs will make paying your bills a challenge. Life is also full of unexpected expenses and emergencies and the result is that we are often forced to rely on debt just to make it through the tough months. “Skoloto”, “debt”, “skuld” – however you refer to it, is unavoidable and it is no secret that at some point we will almost all need debt in one form or another.

SLAYING THE BEAST The luxury and convenience of credit (buy now, pay later) allows us to live beyond our means. Whether it is a necessity or a shopping addiction that leads you to debt, if left unchecked, it will quickly accumulate beyond your control, morphing into a beast that will see you trapped for many years. A whopping 25 million South African adults owe money to various financial institutions and corporate lenders, and according to the National Credit Regulator, 58% of South Africans are struggling to pay off their credit cards.

Feeling trapped and stressed out by your debt brings a heaviness to your life you can live without. You want to break free and that is fantastic. You need a plan!

A good place to start in dealing with your debt is to make sure you have a thorough understanding of what debt is, the types of debt and risks, how interest and repayment terms work, and why some debt can actually be considered good debt!

WHAT IS DEBT? Debt is the amount you owe to a bank or lender for the money you have borrowed. In exchange for what you

interest, or "interest only" loan payments that do not draw down (reduce) the principal. Either way, the full amount is due on the agreed repayment date.

So, how does the bank or lender calculate your monthly repayments? Basically, your debt is amortised, meaning it is spread out over time so that you pay small regular amounts until the total debt is paid up.

loans are two examples of instalment credit.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONSUMER DEBT There are many different types of debt and with it comes confusing jargon and terms and processes. It is important to understand the type of debt you have and what kinds of risks are involved should you not keep to your repayment plan!

TWK RADIUS

SECURED AND UNSECURED DEBT The first thing to understand is that debt can be secured or unsecured. Secured debt is a debt which has assets (eg., a car or house) connected to it and these assets are used as collateral for the debt. This means that if you do not pay the debt, your assets can be repossessed to cover the costs of the debt. Examples of secured debt are:

- A bond or mortgage – the home you are financing

Unsecured debt is debt that relies on your word and written promise that you will pay the debt. You do not put anything on the line as collateral and therefore this type of debt is more expensive as it comes with higher interest rates. Examples of unsecured debt are:

- Some bank loans – also called signature loans, these loans often have higher interest rates because you are not offering an asset as collateral;

secures the credit; - Most Mastercards and Visa cards - when approved, this - A car loan – the car forms the collateral for the loan;

type of credit asks that you pay in a monthly minimum towards your outstanding balance;

- A home equity loan – the real property value of your - Retail store and petrol cards – your repayment is monthly.

home secures the debt;

The minimum must be paid every month. - A secured credit card – if you put an amount of money on your secured credit card, that amount is the secured credit;

- A line of credit – depending on the type of credit line, it may be secured by your home, the funds in your bank account, a certificate of deposit, or other assets.

INSTALMENT DEBT When you pay off your debt in instalments over a specific term, this is called instalment debt. Instalment debt includes car loans, student loans, mortgages, etc, and can be:

- Open-ended - a fixed amount of credit is allocated and can be used however you may wish. Usually, your credit cards will fall into this category; - Closed-ended - a fixed amount of credit is allocated for a specific purpose. For instance, a car or home loan. A specified amount must be paid back every month; - Non-instalment – this type of credit comes with a high credit limit, however, the full amount of credit that is used must be paid back in full when the bill is received. The loan you take out can be long term or short term. Long term loans

LONG TERM AND SHORT TERMS LOANS

are generally for larger amounts than short term loans and are paid off in multiple instalments over a longer period of time. Your home and car loan are examples of long term loans - long term loans can be as long as 20 years and even more.

Short term loans are typically termed for a few days, few weeks, or at the most a couple of months. The maximum amount you can borrow is also much lower and the interest rates will be higher. The approval process is also much quicker and you can get cash into your account as quickly as within a day. Payday loans (expensive!) and credit cards are examples of short-term loans.

WHAT IS A BALLOON PAYMENT? A balloon or residual payment loan (usually on a car) is a loan in which monthly payments are made for a certain amount of time, ending with a lump sum payment to the lender at the end of the loan term.

GOOD DEBT VS BAD DEBT Paying off your debt is considered a priority if you are on a quest for financial freedom. After all, if you owe no money you have more cash available to save and invest for your future, right? But is debt always a bad thing, or can it be good? Clever investor types tell us that not all debt is the same and that it is wise to look at some types of debt as investments that can create wealth for you. This type of debt (good debt), when paired with smart financial tools, can bring you closer to creating a fiscally(money-wise) sound lifestyle all the way through to your retirement. The trick, however, is to keep your

BAD DEBT

debt in good standing by paying it off in a timely manner. So,

On the flipside, bad debt is any sort of debt with high

interest rates that reduce your wealth if you cannot pay it back or pay it back as quick as required. Debt that is

GOOD DEBT Good debt is any type of debt that helps you create wealth - in other words when you use debt with a low interest rate and realistic repayment plan to buy an asset that will appreciate in value over time or provide you with an income. For example, if you take out a home loan, the property you buy should grow in value so that at the end of the loan term, you have an asset with a monetary value that is more

used to buy assets that will depreciate in value over time, or won’t provide you with an income, is considered bad debt. Examples of bad debt include using a credit card or personal loan to buy an expensive car (as this is a depreciating asset) or to pay for a holiday, or when you use your credit card to buy food and non-durable household goods. The problem here is that you are using high interest rates to pay for these items which means if

than what you originally paid for it (including the interest on

Good or bad, too much debt of any kind can leave you trapped

and in a financial crisis. If you are considering taking on any type of debt make sure that you can afford the repayments, that you understand the terms of the loan and any special conditions, and what the interest rate and costs are, including the credit life insurance. Hopelessness can be paralysing but you have more power over your debt than you think. Now that you understand the basics of debt, you can take the next steps to start knocking your debt down.

If

Many of today’s rural homes have no parental structure (absent fathers) and orphaned children who are being cared for by elderly grandparents or older siblings. TWK RADIUS

‘n Kinderstorie deur Jaco Jacobs Illustrasies deur Alex van Houwelingen

Op Basjan-hulle se plaas is ’n boom. ’n Groot ou boom met digte blare. Dis die perfekte boom om kaalvoet in rond te klouter. En in hierdie boom is Basjan se boomhuis.

Basjan se boomhuis is die beste plek op aarde om te speel, skatte weg te steek, te dagdroom, planne te maak … of weg te kruip as Ma jou roep om huiswerk te kom doen! Vandag is Saterdag.

57

TWK SEEDLINGS

TWK RADIUS

Strepies is ’n gebande muishond. Hy volg

hy gaan. A, natuurlik! ’n Leer!

Speel liewer iets anders.” Basjan is nou moedeloos. Hoe gaan hulle brandweer speel sonder ’n leer of ’n brandslang? “Weet julle wat dink ek is die lekkerste deel van ’n brandweerman … of brandweervrou … wees?” vra Neville. Basjan en Nandi trek hulle skouers op. Nee, hulle weet nie. “Ek dink die lekkerste deel is om die brandweerwa te bestuur,” sê Neville. “En om die sirene kliphard te laat loei! Nieee-nôôô-nieee-nôôô!” Basjan en Nandi lag.

TWK RADIUS

Hulle begin al drie rondhardloop terwyl hulle soos brandweersirenes maak. “Nieee-nôôô-nieee-nôôô!” “Haai, wat doen julle daar buite?” roep ’n kwaai stem. Basjan se ousus, Karlien, loer by haar kamervenster uit. Sy lyk vies. “Ons speel brandweer-brandweer,” sê Basjan. “Wel, ek moet leer vir Maandag se toets,” sê Karlien. “Hou op om so te lawaai. Gaan speel iets anders.” Nou is Basjan regtig raadop.

TWK RADIUS

“’n Brand!” sê hy vir die tweeling. “Ons moet dadelik my pa gaan roep.” Kort ná middagete is Basjan se pa terug by die huis. “Nes regte brandbestryders. As dit nie vir julle was nie, sou ons nie so vinnig die brand kon blus nie.

BURGERS for everyone

Steak burger with caramelised onions

Classic Cheese Burger Make your own ground beef patty with a big pinch of kosher salt. Form mince into a ball, then into a thick patty, make an indentation in the center. Heat a cast-iron skillet pan over medium-high heat, sprinkle the pan with olive oil. Cook for four to five minutes per side.

Make perfect caramelised onions: Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over low heat. Add the onions and a good pinch of salt and cook slowly for fifteen to twenty minutes, stirring occasionally. Don't be tempted to turn the heat up, as you don't want the onions to burn.

Top with two slices of cheddar in the last minute of cooking (cover to melt). Serve on a sesame seed bun.

When onions are softened and tinged golden, add sugar and balsamic - this will start the caramelisation process. Cook onions over low heat for a further five to ten minutes, stirring occasionally, until sticky and caramelised. Use immediately, or store in the fridge, in a sterilised jar or plastic container, and use when required. Fry steak until cooked according to taste. Top with your choice of barbeque sauce. Grill buns until toasted. Top each bun with lettuce, gherkins, steak and caramelised onions.

he privilege that many of us have of being custodians of the land goes also with a tremendous responsibility. They say, “You can't have your cake and eat it.”

You have the responsibility and the privilege of being able to farm the land, to be self-employed, to produce food for the hungry, to start your day when you want to and finish it when you want to (many farmers work at least a sixteen-hour day), but remember it is a privilege to have employment. There are many that cannot find work.

It's also a privilege to be able to wake up early in the morning and to experience Mother Nature calling. The African dove is such a beautiful bird and I do not hear that call anywhere else in the world. The Partridge, the Franklin, calling as winter starts coming on, is a sound that I treasure. Also, hearing that beautiful African rain bird call – just before the rain comes, is something that is such a pleasure to hear first thing at dawn, however, with these privileges also goes responsibilities. We have a responsibility to be outspoken for truth and righteousness. That example is not only to be used in words, but actions as well.

There is an old saying that says, “In order for evil to abound, all that good people have to do is nothing.” We need to speak the truth in love. It is the truth that sets the captives free. In the book of Esther 4:14-16, we will see that Esther was challenged by her uncle, Mordechai, to speak up in order to avert a potential genocide amongst the Jews. He said very clearly to his niece in Esther 4:14, “For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

I believe in South Africa the farmer has been chosen for a time such as this. The very foundation of this nation depends on the people who farm the land. Queen Esther took up the challenge from her uncle and was prepared to put everything on the line. She said, in fact, “…if I perish, I perish!” but she was not prepared to compromise her stand.

We need to show this Nation, by example, how Godly people should live. Husbands need to love their wives. Wives need to submit to their husbands. Children need to respect their elders. Employers need to pay a fair day's pay, for a fair day's work. Employees need to work hard, as if they were working for the Lord.

When we start to implement these basic principles, they will speak louder than words and I believe that we have the potential to turn this country into a nation that cannot only feed the continent of Africa, but shine as a light by example.

May God bless you, as you make a decision to speak, not only verbally, but also by action. Let us by faith in God, put our words into action.
