You-key, Ucky, You-kai: the many pronunciations of Uki, the village “where the mountains touch the sky” and the mountain is Wollumbin on Bundjalung Country. This land was never ceded.

When I arrived about 15 years ago, Uki’s art scene was developing through two main events – Images of Uki and Ukitopia. Celebrating its 15th year over the Easter weekend in 2024 at the Uki School of Arts building, ‘Images of Uki’ showcases the work of artists with a 2484 postcode. This longstanding event provides an exhibition space for all artists and their artworks, family, friends and visitors wishing to engage with, appreciate and purchase original works.

Originally coinciding with Ukitopia Arts Collective’s weekend event in the village of Uki (you-kai), ‘Images’ became the opening event to the Ukitopia Festival: a long weekend of curated art and performance. The Ukitopia weekends were filled with live music on multiple stages throughout the village, stand-up comedy, circus performances, poetry and, of course, much more, adding to the history of arts in Uki.

Uki village’s (white) history starts in the cedar-getting days––from the 1850s until the early 1900s––the land was cleared of tall cedar trees as a saleable commodity. The clearing became a reserve suitable for travelling stock and later, for dairy farming.1

The Uki School of Arts, built in 1911, is one of the six remaining historic buildings in Uki which continues to be the centre of community activities and celebration. Otherwise known as “the Hall”, it hosts weekly events, including the Saturday Farmers’ Market, Capoeira, Just Dance, Yoga, Pilates, Taekwondo, Anzac Day breakfasts and various council meetings and community-led information sessions. Over the years the Hall played host to Miss Uki Balls, weekend roller-skating, Glo-dance, Cabaret 360 and fundraising events. More recently it became support central for our flooded community in 2022 and the birthplace of Resilient Uki.

DEAR READER,

My journey through the world of arts began with a fascination that encompassed everything from performing to fine art. Despite my modest artistic abilities, I was drawn to art class in high school and entertained the idea of pursuing fine art at university. However, my late father, with his characteristic honesty and parental wisdom, gently nudged me towards a path more aligned with my skills and potential for sustainable livelihood. And so, I set out on the path of studying commercial art, a decision that I have never regretted.

My academic pursuits led me to attain scholarships for a Master of Science in Communication Design at Pratt Institute in New York City. The vibrant artistic culture and collective energy of the art school environment resonated deeply with me. It wasn't until I discovered M | Arts Precinct a few years ago, and more recently immersed myself among the artists in the picturesque village of Uki, that I rediscovered that familiar sense of inspiration here on the Tweed.

Gallery at the Buttery to the eclectic ambiance of Art Post Uki, reminiscent of the cozy camaraderie of the 80s sitcom "Cheers," where everyone knows your name, I found myself immersed in a community that embraced and nurtured creativity. It was in this supportive environment that I felt a rekindling of the same creative spark that ignited within me over two decades ago—a profound sense of connection and belonging, akin to a warm embrace welcoming me home.

I invite you to enjoy the selected works of some of the talented artists from the Tweed. While we have only just begun to scratch the surface of the artistic richness of this area, I hope you can appreciate, as I have, the wealth of spirit and talent it has to offer, echoing the sentiments of this former New Yorker.

The Art of Storytelling

Fostering creativity to grow sales and build brand affinity

WORDS POVEL TORUDD

Contrary to common perception, creativity in business isn’t a luxury reserved for large brands. It’s a powerful tool that any small business, budding start-up and ambitious sole trader can leverage to connect with customers and drive sales. But perhaps more important, as a daily mindset it can help owners and founders find new and lucrative areas to pivot towards, because creative thinking often leads to new ideas.

And with 6600 businesses registered in the Tweed – an estimated 90% of them small businesses with less than five employees – it’s fair to say that the battle for the hearts and minds of the customers in the region is fierce. Cue creativity…

In my work as a professional brand communicator, I have seen the business upsides firsthand, even a few surprising ones from well-managed brands too. For example, did you know that in a recent survey by Berkeley Communications called Beyond Brand, most Australian staff and job seekers rate ‘believing in a brand’s values’ higher than “getting the best possible pay package” from a brand they don’t align emotionally with.

It’s worth reading that again. Your brand has the power to both retain and

attract new talent, even more so than money alone.

Still not convinced? Here’s some useful ammunition for why embedding creativity into the DNA of small business workflows is so crucial for those among Tweed’s 6600 businesses that want to stand out.

Creativity can build affinity. Small businesses, start-ups, and sole traders can activate creativity most effectively by using business and brand storytelling. But what exactly is business storytelling? Storytelling goes beyond traditional marketing; it’s about crafting narratives that resonate with audiences on an emotional level and it’s how our human brains have evolved over millennia to process and contextualise information. In essence, it’s part of our evolution and the scientific way to ensure your business message is memorised. Authentic storytelling humanises brands, communicates values, and establishes trust, fostering long-term affinity and loyalty. Whether it’s sharing the journey of starting a business, highlighting customer success stories, or showcasing the impact of products/ services, storytelling is one of the best

tools. It’s also free and only limited by your creativity. Think of brands like Amazon and Uber, they weren’t always huge well-known brands, but we still remember the founder stories from when they operated out of a garage somewhere.

Creativity can impact on sales. But it’s not just brand and communications, creativity and storytelling directly impact business success too. When your customers feel a genuine connection with your brand, they are more likely to choose your products or services over competitors. Plain and simple. Additionally, creativity in product design, packaging, and presentation can enhance perceived value, leading to higher customer satisfaction and repeat purchases. Think of unboxing an iPhone, your excitement is established even before you hold it in your hands. And there is no difference with the packaging of a locally developed product, it’s the extra level of creative detail that will separate your next successful idea, from those that didn’t work.

A TINKER’S CUSS When the owner of this establishment, Brendan, sort advice from a well known businessman, he was told his enterprise would never work. He walked away muttering ‘I don’t give A Tinker’s Cuss’. Hence the name of this business which is now thriving after opening two and half years ago.

Brendan sharpens knives and does other metal related work. As a decorative blacksmith, he makes small functional items like latches, catches, handles and hinges. “Everything that goes out the door here is functional. I also teach these skills and run workshops”.

“I’ve been doing this kind of thing all my life. My dad taught me how to make knives when I was 13. If we didn’t have something, we built it, including the tools."

As such the business is quite dynamic, buying and selling, restoring, and repairing old tools; making bespoke tools; sharpening and teaching these skills. The shop is a moving feast, housing a wide variety of eclectic items as well as fine work from other local makers. tinktink.com.au / 0488 299 971

The Revival of Uki’s Historic Post Office

Tucked away in the tranquil folds of the Tweed Hinterland, at the foothills of the majestic Mount Wollumbin, lies the Uki Post Office. For over a century, it has stood as a silent sentinel, bearing witness to the ebb and flow of life in the local community since its establishment in 1909. Yet, in 2017, a man named Gary Wall emerged onto the scene, breathing new life into this historic landmark with his love for coffee and community.

Gary Wall is no ordinary postmaster. To him, the dilapidated structure of the old post office was not just a crumbling edifice but a canvas ripe for reinvention. With a bold vision and a considerable investment of half a million dollars, Gary spearheaded a remarkable transformation. The once-neglected building emerged from the dust of neglect, reborn as a fusion of history and modernity. Stepping inside, one can still trace the echoes of the past in the original hoop pine timber benches and weath-

ered ironbark floorboards, all framed by the timeless facade. However, there’s a delightful twist to this tale.

Welcome to Bastion Lane, the local’s haven for the perfect cup of coffee. Gary’s brainchild quickly became a bustling gathering spot for caffeine enthusiasts far and wide. But Gary’s dreams extended beyond the realm of coffee beans. Inspired by the creative energy of local artist Sue Kinneally, whose captivating work he stumbled upon at the Images of Uki annual exhibition, Gary envisioned a harmonious marriage between art and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee.

Thus, Art Post Uki was born—a collaborative venture between Gary and Sue. Under Sue’s curatorship, the post office evolved into a vibrant art space, alive with the hues and narratives of talented local artists. Here, visitors are treated to an eclectic mix of mediums—paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics—all coalescing to create a

vibrant collage of local culture and expression. To maintain the gallery’s reputation for quality, every artist undergoes scrutiny by three impartial judges, ensuring fairness and excellence.

The inaugural exhibition of Art Post Uki featured the works of Matt Ottley, a versatile artist celebrated for his contributions to music, writing, and illustration, boasting over 40 published picture books and numerous prestigious awards. Now, as Art Post approaches its sixth year, it stands on the cusp of celebrating its 50th exhibition, a milestone that will showcase the renowned artist Hobie Porter. This achievement is not merely a testament to Gary’s visionary pursuits but also a tribute to the enduring spirit of community enrichment that permeates every corner of Art Post Uki.

As Art Post Uki prepares to mark this significant milestone, it serves as a centre of creativity and collaboration in the heart of the Tweed Hinterland. Beyond its role as a gallery, it has become a vibrant hub where locals and visitors alike come together to celebrate art, culture, and community. So, the next time you find yourself wandering through the picturesque village of Uki, be sure to pay a visit to Art Post Uki, where history, modernity, and creativity blend harmoniously, reflecting the enduring spirit of a community united by its love for art and coffee.

50th Exhibition at Art Post Uki, 23 May — 3 Jul 2024

Hobie’s Artist Statement: The sublime has been a consistent concern across my practice. More recently I’ve been interested in the cinematic format. I am currently producing paintings that reflect those remote areas of my home, the Tweed Valley. As a starting point, I produce visual imagery using drone technology, finding that a weightless, infinite sense of landscape adds dimension to my personal perspective of the sublime. I process imagery in my studio, using these digital images as resource imagery to create an organic painting. I like to emphasise ethereal, transcendent, emotive qualities in my paintings as I ponder a sense of floating amidst the mountains. My intention is to try to visually communicate this feeling as a remarkable characteristic of belonging to this country.

Little Gallery Uki

From little things big things grow

WORDS ANDIA CALLY

Nestled in a cozy corner of the historic Buttery building in Uki is a vibrant artist-run space called Little Gallery. Home to 12 diverse artists local to the 2484 area, this small and dynamic space offers an array of bi-monthly exhibitions and monthly feature walls.

Our petite gallery is packed with an eclectic array of art forms, including glass, photography, painting, printing, mixed media, ceramics, jewellery and wearable art. As well as offering tourists and locals affordable and unique artworks, visitors love to chat to the creators behind the artworks, who take turns in managing the gallery.

Working as an artist is incredible and often isolating. This is why I love being part of an artists’ collective. Working alongside 11 other artists is an amazing source of inspiration, information, and a safe space to test new ideas.

Being part of a creative collective stretches all of us to move beyond our comfort zones. This often happens when we choose our group-themed exhibitions that provide artistic challenges, such as working with certain colours or quotes.

Last year we each had a hand in designing a new gallery sign, with every artist creating a letter in their signature style. The completed sign (as pictured top right) is a beautiful, bespoke reflection of what each of us brings to the gallery.

One of Little Gallery’s founder’s Michele Bevis shares how a series of synchronistic events led to establishing Uki’s first dedicated gallery. “In 2022 I was looking for an artists’ studio. When one of the shops at the Buttery became available that year, I put my hand up. I ended up finding a house that already had a studio space. Meanwhile, the Uki Café closed, which had offered a gallery space. I approached the Uki Residents Association, who own the Buttery, with the idea of turning the vacant

shop into a community gallery, they were keen. We rounded up all the local artists we knew and launched in April 2022 on the same weekend as Uki’s annual Easter art institution — Images of Uki.”

The gallery has spurred some amazing artistic collaborations, some intentional, others accidental. Our resident mosaic artist recently turned obstacle into opportunity after accidentally breaking another artist’s ceramic piece and incorporating the broken pieces into a gorgeous joint work.

In the spirit of collaboration, our June and July feature walls will both be joint offerings. June’s feature, “Detritus,” is a collaboration between artists Judy-Collins Haynes and Christine Mellor, which focuses on “imagining the potential in discarded and decaying objects to give them new life and bring out their hidden qualities.”

Our July feature wall showcases 3D works from artists Michele Bevis and Marlena Basser in their exhibition— Stalactites and Stalagmites: Where heaven meets earth. This exhibition of sculptures combines painted blocks, glass, ceramics, metalwork and upcycled readymade objects. “The works will rise from the ground and hang from the ceiling, speaking to the aspiration that we live in alignment with our higher selves, thereby creating ‘heaven on earth’.

Little Gallery opens Wednesday—Sunday 10-3pm. We run regular workshops, art demos and tasters. Keep an eye on our Facebook page, Little Gallery Uki for event details and follow us on Instagram @littlegallery_uki.

The Journey Behind ‘Remnants of Italy’

In a poignant reflection of her past, the upcoming textile collection by Melise Smith serves as a testament to resilience and the transformative power of travel. What began as a daring escape from adversity in 2015 has now evolved into a captivating fusion of personal experiences and artistic expression.

“I’d just been through the worst couple of years of unfortunate events (life throws at you sometimes), I just needed to run away and did quite literally. I’d never left the country before. Couldn’t speak a word of French or Italian. Had no idea what to do once I got to an international airport let alone on my own with a child. What was I thinking. Clearly I wasn’t, I was broken and just trying to keep my head above water,” Melise recalls, reflecting on the tumultuous period that led to her journey.

‘Remnants of Italy’ is more than just a series of textiles; it is a narrative woven from threads of resilience, passion, and the unwavering pursuit of beauty in the face of adversity.

As a single mother facing the aftermath of life’s relentless trials, Melise embarked on a courageous journey with her 10-year-old son, venturing across continents to forge a new path. The decision to uproot their lives and relocate to the enchanting landscapes of Europe was not made lightly. It demanded meticulous planning, interviews at the French consulate in Sydney to gain their visas, and unwavering determination.

Settling in the quaint town of Montpellier, nestled in the charm of southern France, marked the beginning of an odyssey that would leave an indelible mark on their souls. From the cobblestone streets steeped in history to the rich mosaic of cultures they encountered, each step was a revelation. Their sojourn extended beyond the borders of France, leading them to Spain and eventually to the picturesque haven of Levanto, Italy. It was here, amidst the timeless allure of Italian charm, that Melise’s heart found solace and inspiration. The essence of the place, embodied in its people, architecture, and rich heritage, stirred something profound within her creative spirit.

What began as a mere fascination with the art of sewing and an affinity for collecting buttons from local markets blossomed into a full-fledged artistic endeavour. The memories of stumbling upon hidden gems while traversing the breathtaking trails of Cinque Terre, coupled with the allure of antique rosary beads, became the cornerstone of her forthcoming collection.

‘Remnants of Italy’ is more than just a series of textiles; it is a narrative woven from threads of resilience, passion, and the unwavering pursuit of beauty in the face of adversity. Each piece bears the imprint of Melise’s journey — a testament to the transformative power of wander-

lust and the boundless depths of the human spirit.

In a world often overshadowed by chaos and uncertainty, Melise’s story reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit. From the remnants of our past, we have the power to create something truly extraordinary. As her collection prepares to make its debut, it invites us to embark on a journey of our own — one filled with wonder, discovery, and the promise of endless possibility.

Mega n’s Touch Mida s Touch Mega n’s

In 2022, Uki resident and proud Kalkadoon woman, Megan Albany released her debut novel —The Very Last List of Vivian Walker. The hilarious and moving ode to the end of an ordinary life was critically acclaimed and beloved by readers and live audiences alike, after it was adapted into a one-woman play. The book is about to enjoy its third wave of success, with the news that an Australian production company has recently optioned it as a film.

The novel was inspired by Megan’s experience caring for her friend and fellow journalist, who had PTSD and required round-the-clock care when she got cancer. The two friends had talked about starting a publishing house together and after her friend died Megan describes feeling “almost bossed into writing the book”, by her dearly departed friend.

While her friend did leave a list of post-funeral tasks, Megan says she was more laid back and good humoured than the book’s central character, the highly judgemental, compulsive list maker, Vivian Walker.

“Initially I was asked to make Viv more likeable, but I pushed back on that because we all have people in our lives that we love but don’t really ‘like’ that much,” Megan laughs.

“All the hilarious things that drive us crazy about someone are also the reasons we love them.” The fact that Vivian is spending her last moments creating to-do lists, rather than a bucket list is what makes her so relatable.

Like many women, Vivian puts herself last on her to-do list. “Caring and love aren’t always wrapped up in a pretty package, and can look a lot like nagging but Viv’s just trying to make things better and keep her family safe after she’s gone.”

The other thing that people appreciate about this story is that it brings death out of the shadows. “I think the reason it worked for Viv to be so judgemental is that as a society we can be very judgey about death and grieving. We commend people for ‘coping’ well and not falling apart but that’s not necessarily coping. A lot of people we think are ok are actually just very lonely in their grief.”

As songwriters and musicians, Megan and her husband, guitarist Marc Mittag, decided to create a soundtrack to ac-

company the book. Originally available via a link on the book cover, the songs came into their own after a chance meeting with actress Madeleine West who brought the novel to life in a powerful one-woman play that toured the country, accompanied by a live performance of the soundtrack.

A non-disclosure agreement means Megan must keep mum about the upcoming film adaptation. She can share that “the producers have indicated they would like me to work closely with them on the adaptation of the screenplay”.

Somewhere amid the spinoff successes of her first novel, and the “curse of the second book”, Megan has been working on two new story ideas. The forerunner is another unlikely subject for a black comedy — the fight to raise the age of child incarceration in Australia. “Currently children as young as ten can be jailed despite calls from the United Nations to raise the age.” There are no release dates for the film or new novel, keep an eye out for updates on Megan’s website, www.meganalbany.com

We’re sure that they will both be worth the wait.

Creativity can level the playing field. Creativity can level the playing field too, allowing smaller businesses to compete effectively against larger brands with bigger budgets. Creative strategies don’t always require significant financial investment; they rely on imagination, innovation, and understanding of your customers. And in today’s digital age, creative digital marketing tactics, such as word-of-mouth content, influencer collaborations, owned content and interactive experiences, can amplify brand visibility and reach.

So, where to start? By fostering a culture of continuous innovation, adaptability, and improvement, creativity can also directly contribute to sustainable business growth. Small businesses that prioritise creativity in their workflows are better positioned to evolve with changing market dynamics, embrace new opportunities, and stay ahead of competitors. Creative thinking encourages experimentation, calculated risk-taking, and learning from failures, essential elements for long-term success and resilience in all business environments.

To wrap up, creativity is not just important; it’s essential for the SMBs, startups, and sole traders in Tweed that want to stand out. Embrace creativity in marketing, product development, and overall customer engagement, and anyone can create meaningful connections, stand out in competitive markets, and thrive in our shire’s evolving business landscape.

Art Release Therapy

Discovering the Authentic Vulnerable Self

KENDALL

At the heart of Art Release Therapy lies the belief that true healing begins with self-expression. I understand the struggles many individuals face in expressing their emotions verbally, this type of therapy offers you a safe very internal healing space to explore your innermost thoughts and feelings through any art. By tapping into your creative intuition, you can access deeper layers of emotion and experience profound healing on a soul level.

In the realm of healing and self-discovery, Art Therapy shines brightly as a symbol of authenticity and empowerment. I have used this transformative approach for myself and my clients, offering a unique journey toward emotional healing and personal growth.

One of the key benefits of Art Release Therapy is its ability to bypass the limitations of verbal communication. I guide participants through a series of artistic exercises, with various mediums and prompts, allowing you to express yourself authentically and without judgment. Through this process, individuals can release pentup emotions, gain insights into their subconscious mind, and foster a greater sense of self-awareness, often giving the inner child a voice and a place to play, which is often suppressed in adulthood.

When I began Art Therapy, it reignited my creativity and unlocked a wellspring of joy, love, and playfulness. It empowered me to speak up, shed my victim mentality, and release my perfectionism. Art Therapy encouraged messiness, which was liberating. As I advanced through classes and self-guided sessions, I felt compelled to share this transformative process with others.

step out of your comfort zone and embrace your true self, empowering you to live more authentically. Choosing YOU first may not come easily, but as you allow your Art to flow, your everyday life feels easier; you have more energy to give and you radiate from the inside out because your body is no longer holding old feelings and emotions.

Furthermore, Art Release Therapy enhances communication skills by providing a non-verbal means of expression. Communicating through art fosters deeper connections and more authentic relationships with yourself and others, especially your children. By learning to express yourself creatively, you can cultivate greater empathy, understanding, and compassion towards yourself and others. This is the foundation for true forgiveness to oneself and others, which then allows all the anger, frustration, resentment, and deeper feelings to fall away.

In a powerful Art Therapy session, I embraced a gentle approach, using watercolour paper and soft, gelatocoloured paints. After journaling my emotions, I let them flow onto the canvas. With each brushstroke, tears mixed with paint, creating a cathartic release of pain and anger. What remained was a sense of peace and healing, revealing the transformative power of art therapy.

Another benefit of Art Release Therapy is its ability to promote stress reduction and relaxation. Engaging in artistic activities has been shown to have scientifically based therapeutic effects on the body and mind, helping individuals unwind and find inner peace amidst the chaos of daily life. Through creative expression, participants can explore new ways of thinking and being, challenge themselves creatively, and expand their self-awareness. It encourages you to

Through creative expression and compassionate guidance, participants can experience profound emotional healing, personal growth, and enhanced communication skills, creating a memory to take with you after the Art Therapy work. Embarking on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, embracing your true self, and living a life fully expressed by choosing you is one of the most transformative things you can do for yourself as you rediscover or further discover your inner child and allow her to be LOVED.

You can find Melissa @thefineflow and/or join her for the upcoming event on the 26th May 2-4pm at the Salt Water Studio - Kingscliff. Or work with her privately either face to face or online for VIP Womens Empowerrment Coaching.
