SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7

Howdy folks! Is it fall already?!? Our summer seemed to fly by this year! We took our family to BC for a few days, no children were harmed during the trip, and we came back with the same three we started with, so a success in our books! We got to see some beautiful country, the mountains, of course, and even went on a wine tour! In other news, we have to congratulate a few folks on celebrating some milestones throughout the summer months- congratulations to Miles & Bonnie Glasman, M & J Farms who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in June; Happy 30th birthday to Melissa McRae, Mar Mac Farms/Prairie Pistol Designs, sorry we missed the epic party in July! We also lost some strong women over the last few months, we send our condolences to Meco Chappellaz as his wife Trudy lost her battle with Cancer and to Dale Studer who also lost his wife Elaine this year. Our thoughts are with you and your families. There’s a new horse in the sale management race, congratulations to Darnell Fornwald and his team at First Class Cattle Marketing on the purchase of the sale management divison from Bouchard Livestock. So, let’s talk about the weather, shall we..... what the heck, Mother Nature, time to change your meds again!!! We prayed for rain all summer, not a drop. Then we hit September, and you turn on the hose and forget to turn it off!!! Can’t you see that us farmers are trying to harvest to feed the world? And the snow in the forecast, not even funny!! Seriously thinking of googling how to build an ark..... As we gear up for the fall show and sale run, here’s hoping you got at least some grain in the bin, that the silage pile is a mile high and that we don’t have to turn the heat tapes on just yet for those pesky water bowls! Best of luck to those who are heading down the road on the show circuit and safe travels. See y’all down the sale trail...John and Joanne

The Manitoba Simmental Association would like to congratulate Kinley Peters of Rivers, MB and Emma Galloway of Foxwarren, MB for being chosen to each recieve a $500 voucher towards the purchase of a registered Simmental female from one of our MSA members as listed on our website. These young ladies were chosen from a draw of all the Manitoba 4-H members that were showing a Simmental-influenced project animal at their achievements. Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up Weekend Another Success Submitted by Samantha Rimke, MYBR Committee Member Pictures by Prairie Pistol Designs

The cattle industry is in good hands after watching the participants at Round Up. On August 2-4, 2019, 48 enthusiastic Manitoba and Saskatchewan Junior Cattle Producers attended the 12th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa, Manitoba. Excitement in the cattle industry brought out a top-notch group of interested cattle producers and 58 head of cattle. This year 22 new members attended Roundup for the first time. Where else can you attend an event with 48 Junior members all working together as teams and in individual competitions, to learn the skills needed in the Livestock Industry. This is not just any cattle show, it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue in the livestock industry. Our show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors, parents, juniors and committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success. The weekend started off Friday afternoon with a presentation on judging techniques, parts of the animal and explanations on judging terms with Bill Biglieni of WLB Livestock. Following the judging workshop, Megan Baron gave an overview on how to give oral reasons for the judging competitions. During supper, Junior Director, Taylor Carlson, made a presentation on her trips to Iowa and Japan for the junior members to see the opportunities that are available for them. That evening all juniors participated in the Photo Bingo Contest – a fun, hands on challenge where teams work together to complete 10 stations related to the cattle industry. It is a great way for Juniors to work together, make new friendships, learn some new skills and have fun while doing it! On Saturday, the Juniors were busy with many different events. In the morning they participated in Public Speaking, how to do an Interview, Individual Judging and attended an informative workshop on the Verified Beef Program by Coordinator of VBP, Betty Green. In the afternoon, the Juniors took part in Team Judging, Team Fitting, the Stockman’s Knowledge competition and the Pee Wee’s learned how to make rope halters and other activities. New General Manager of the Manitoba Beef Producers, Carson Callum, was in attendance to see what our Junior Beef Producers are involved in and see their various skills. Saturday evening was wrapped up with the Cook-Off competition sponsored by Enns Brothers Equipment and a slip n’ slide to cool off for the day! Sunday was show day. Thank-you to our show day judges, Robin Hogberg, John Hogberg and Kolton McInstosh. Juniors participated in showmanship classes in the morning and then confirmation classes in the afternoon. We rounded the day off with a parade of champions and a parade of 4-H champions then concluded with awards. Each and every year, Round-Up is a weekend filled with friendships, learning, skills and knowledge. It was once again another successful weekend!

A highlight of the Convention was the 2019 Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) auction which was once again a success raising $100,850 to support the Foundation’s programming. Highlights included a bred heifer donated by Barlee Simmentals of Shawville, Quebec which raised $32,140. At the 2019 National YCSA show, which was held the final day of the Convention, the FCSF presented $15,000 from the auction proceeds to the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) for ongoing youth activities. The 2019 Young Canadian Simmental Association’s National Classic completed the week and was attended by almost 70 YCSA members from across Canada and two participants from the USA. 100 head of cattle were displayed in the conformation classes. “It’s an exciting time to be part of the Simmental breed as we continue to celebrate the success and growth of the breed” stated CSA President Garth Rancier. “We look forward to continued growth as we work at supplying superior genetics to beef producers both in Canada and world-wide.” The Manitoba Simmental Association looks forward to hosting next year’s convention and AGM in Portage La Prairie July 23rd – 26th, 2020.
