Howdy folks.....how’s everybody hangin in there...?? Never in a million years would I think that we wouldn’t have any shows to go to, or that even just the thought of leaving the house would have me second guessing myself....weird times I tell ya.... I hope that if you have been out and about that y’ll are staying safe and healthy, and fingers crossed this whole thing is over soon! We sure are missing visiting with our friends and customers and hope to see you all again real soon! We have some congratulations wishes to send out- a few of our friends have celebrated some milestones! Sending out happy 65th birthday wishes to Marcel Theroux, Homestead-T Simmentals, Notre Dame de Lourdes, MB and Gordon Jones, Gordon Jones Simmentals, Baldur, MB, we hope Covid didn’t ruin your party!! Also, sending Jake Buhler, one of our retired Simmental breeder friends, a happy 80th birthday! Congratulations to Manitoba’s own Gracie Falconer on being elected the National Young Canadian Simmental Association President. We know you will do great things and wish you all the best in your new role! We would like to pass on our condolences to the Ecklund family, Calico Cattle Co., Whitewood, SK on the sudden passing of Debbie, our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time. Triple R Simmentals’ TV Debut Submitted by Dr. Keri Hudson, DVM
Triple R Simmentals will be featured on an upcoming episode of the popular Canadian television show Dr. Keri: Prairie Vet on Animal Planet Canada. The docuseries focuses on the daily work of Dr. Keri Hudson Reykdal, a mixed animal veterinarian in Ashern, Manitoba. Her husband Calvin, a cow/calf producer, also makes frequent appearances on the show. The television series is produced by Merit Motion Pictures, a local Winnipeg company but it airs across the country on Animal Planet Canada. Triple R Simmentals is a four generation family owned farm in Haywood, Manitoba. The Dequier and Warkentin Families recently hosted the crew from Dr. Keri: Prairie Vet and Calvin for a day, to learn about their Simmental bull breeding program. The featured episode will follow Calvin as he gets his bulls ready for the upcoming breeding season. Dr. Keri is on the Reykdal farm to do the yearly bull soundness evaluations to ensure all 25 bulls are ready to breed the 600 mother cows. Calvin runs a commercial herd with a strong Simmental influence. He has been a regular client of Triple R Simmentals for over 10 years and relies heavily on their breeding program. The viewer learns about the bull soundness evaluation process as well as the challenges of keeping bulls healthy and how bulls are chosen for a cow/calf operation. Part of the episode was planned to take place at the 2020 Oakview, Perkin, Triple R Simmental Bull Sale. But when Covid-19 threw a wrench into the live auction sale and shut down the film industry, a new plan was conceived. Dr. Keri and Calvin wanted to highlight the important relationship between bull breeder and cow/calf producer as they feel that it is key to a successful operation. To this end, a fall visit to Triple R Simmentals was a great compromise for the challenging year of filming. The viewer gets to meet the young bull calves and the family who has become so important to Calvin’s operation. Over the years, Calvin and Triple R Simmentals have developed a trusting and loyal relationship. At this point, Calvin says, “They likely know a lot more about the genetics of my herd than I do”. Great customer service, attention to detail, a knowledge of his herd and what bulls will work well with his existing genetics, is what sets this breeding program apart for Calvin. “They know what I like and what will cross well with my cows”. Bulls can be a challenge, but good genetics, temperament and conformation are vital to the success of a cow/calf operation. SSA 50th Annual General Meeting - Aug. 3, 2020 Well it wasn’t quite the meeting we’re used to, but due to the restrictions this year, the SSA Board of Director’s opted to host the Saskatchewan Simmental Annual Meeting via a Zoom meeting. SSA Members were able to join from across Saskatchewan for the meeting. Some great discussions took place and Director elections were held. Sarah Delorme, Tyler Libke, and Jody Woytiuk’s terms were complete. We wish to Thank them for the many hours dedicated to the SSA and the promotion of the Simmental breed in Saskatchewan! New director’s welcomed to the SSA Board of Director’s for 3-year terms are Dean Sentes, Travis Fisk and Toby Noble.
