Well, here we are, the last month this year. Where did November go?!? I’m sure most of us will be happy to see this year end! After a dry summer, a soggy fall and extra long harvest, here’s hoping Mother Nature will bless the farmers with a Spring full of sunshine and rainbows! Show and sale season is well underway and I have to say, hats off to all those who brought a great set of cattle to town. As the female sales continue to roll on, we will continue to hope for good weather and roads and wish everyone the best of luck in the sale barns! On a sad note, the Simmental industry has lost an icon, Archie Londry has passed away at the age of 97. Whether you have been part of the Simmental family for a just short time or been around for a while, everyone knew Archie. You can read about Archie’s accomplishments in the Simmental industy later in this issue. We send our condolences to Archie’s family and many friends, he will be missed by many. As this year draws to a close, John and I would like to thank all of our Simmental friends and customers for their patience and patronage over the past year. We wish you all a happy holiday season filled with love, laughter, and good times. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!!

After graduating from Diploma Agriculture, I returned to the farm in Sylvan, MB and started Sig’n’Al Simmentals with my Dad. We purchased our first Simmental females in 1985 from Rocky Top Simmentals. We continued to buy females from various breeders. We sold bulls and heifers for many years throughout the Interlake. Lately we have been using a cross breeding program, but our female replacements are always a high percentage Simmental. Our farm is located near Fisher Branch, Manitoba and consists of 1600 acres of cropland, hay and pasture. We have consistently run about 100 cows. My wife, Shaun is a semi-retired school principal at Fisher Branch Collegiate, who is looking forward to spending more time on the farm in the future. We have four children, three who have pursued careers in the education field. Our youngest son, Arik, is interested in the farm. He has completed his Agriculture Diploma and is currently working on his degree. In addition to our herd, we operate Sylvan Genetics, which offers complete AI service. We have been attending the Pembina Triangle Sale for a number of years and feel we been able to purchase top quality cattle to add to our herd. This has been an annual event to attend and we enjoy the great hospitality at the sale. We would like to thank the Pembina Triangle Association for choosing our farm for this award.

Obituary For Wes Alm Claresholm, Alberta July 29, 1925 – November 13, 2019
Wes Alm was an influential cattleman, founding the Bar 15 Ranch with his wife Dixie in the Porcupine Hills of southwest Alberta. They began with breeding good Hereford cattle and Wes became a pioneer in the beef business through his use of cross-breeding and A.I. with Simmental genetics. In fact he was one of the first progressive cattlemen to use Parisien semen. Recognizing the potential of the breed Wes was instrumental in the importation of Simmental cattle from Switzerland. In the 1970’s Wes was a partner in MJA Sales Management Ltd and in 1973 they held the first ”World Sale of Simmental” in Calgary which featured 34 fullblood bulls with both parents originating from Europe. That sale averaged a record $32,000 per head! Wes called that era the “Roaring Seventies”. Wes served as president of the Alberta Simmental Association and sat on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Simmental Association. He was well respected for the quality of his cattle, his integrity and his honesty. He led a storied life which is chronicled in his memoirs, A Thousand Wishes Granted, written by he and his partner Annette Rush. He was a humble man who made great contributions to the Simmental breed and the beef industry in western Canada. We extend our sincere sympathies to Anne and Quentin Stevick, Annette and all of his family.

Remembering Archie Londry (Reprinted from Manitoba Simmental Memories)
Archie Londry, born at Minnedosa, MB in 1922, has long been recognized as a pioneer in the livestock and Simmental business. His grandparents came to the Minnedosa area in the late 1800’s. His dad was born in Minnedosa and farmed in the area all his life. Archie’s father, Roy Londry, introduced Purebred Herefords to his herd in 1918. The first Hereford female registered in Archie’s name was in 1932. He has continued to own registered cattle to this day. To say that Archie had an active, interesting life would be an understatement. As an example, during a four-year period around the time World War II started, Archie drove mules to work the farm, fired a steam engine on the railroad, and flew aircraft. In 1941, Archie joined the Armed Services and qualified for air crew. He took his pilot training and spent the rest of the war years training new pilots in Canada, staitioned mainly at the Brandon Air Training Base. He had some Archie was a recipient of the Keystone Simmental Association Honorary Life interesting stories to tell about this period in his Membership Award in 2018. (Presented by Keystone Simmental Association Preslife. Discharged from active service at the end of ident Everett More.) the war in 1945, he was one of a group of pilots retained as a special reserve force for five years in case they were needed during the cold war. Archie bought his first farm land in 1946, through the Veteran’s Land Act, establishing the farm northeast of Rapid City, Manitoba. In those days, there was no power, no telephone and the road past his farm was no more than a dirt trail. Today, that dirt trail is No.10 highway. In 1946, he married Winona Horer, who had grown up on a farm near where he was raised. She became his lifelong partner as well as partner in the farm. Together they developed polled Hereford and polled Simmental herds that influenced beef cattle worldwide. Archie’s dad had retianed the heifers produced by Archie’s Hereford cows during the war years, so he had a good foundation to start his cattle herd. He has had a long and rewarding career showing and selling Hereford and Simmental cattle. Since the age of eleven, Archie showed at Brandon’s Summer or Winter Fairs for 72 consecutive years, except for time served in the Air Force. He remembers selling his championship steer at the Winter Fair in 1938 for 18 cents a pound, a good price at the time. Over the years, many of his Hereford and Simmental bulls were high sellers and bull sale champions. The very productive polled Hereford cowherd he developed made a very sound foundation to build his polled Simmental herd. He bought his first Simmental semen in 1970 and imported Simmental females from Switzerland. When Polaris, the first Fullblood polled bull, was born in 1976, he was introduced into the AWL A.I. program with his first sons born in 1979. After trying some other polled Fullblood bulls without results that met his expectations, Archie turned to linebreeding progeny of two Polaris sons, representing two different polled Fullblood cow families in his herd. The results built a strong foundation for a polled program that was very rewarding with polled Fullblood Simmental cattle, semen and embryos from AWL Simmentals exported to 17 different countries on four continents. AWL Simmentals polled bulls and females were well accepted in the U.K. The first AWL polled Fullblood Simmental bull exported to Scotland was AWL Polar 8R. This 1983 son of AWL Pol-Star 27L and out of a dam whose grandsires were Polaris and Milord, was imported by Finlay McGowan of Perthshire, Scotland. Polar 8R produced a son who was Grand Champion Bull at the prestigious Royal Highland Show. 8R himself was show at the same show and placed third in class.

Remembering Archie Londry (continued from page 22)
John Gillan of Antrim Simmentals, Clanwilliam, MB, was one of Archie’s U.K. customers before John came to Canada to farm. John met Archie in Scotland where Archie was visiting the McGowan family. John, and partner Robert Gamble, came to AWL and bought a bull, AWL Supermac 14U in 1986. This bull worked well and John and Robert Gamble’s son, Henry, returned to AWL in 1988 and bought AWL Spartan. This bull, shown as a three year old, by John and his partners, won points at six major shows and was declared Bull of the Year in Ireland. The award was presented by the Prime Minister of Ireland. In 1987, Snaigow Farms of Perthshire, Scotland, visited AWL and purchased Canadian Spartan 13W by AVF Polled Spartan, a bull bred by Archie’s neighbor, Bruce Firby of Acomb Valley Farms. Polled Spartan was also the sire of John Gillan’s bull, AWL Manitoba Spartan. AWL Starlett 8E, exported to England as an open heifer, developed into a winner at the major shows in southern England. She was still producing in the Heathrow herd at 17 years of age. She shows up in pedigrees to this day and lived on the farm for 21 years, until January 2016. Archie made about ten trips to the U.K. visiting friends and customers, and judging some shows. He was one of the first judges to make a cow-calf pair Champion Female at a U.K. show. This caused some headshaking as the U.K. breeders were used to having mature, fat, dry cows win the shows. As his CSA number of 327 indicates, Archie was one of the early Simmental breeders in Canada and active in many of the new associations and sales. He sold cattle in many Keystone Association sales and is a lifetime member. He also sold cattle at Agribition and exhibited at as many fairs and shows as possible. Simmental bulls were first sold at the Brandon Bull Sale in 1976. Archie took four head and won five championships, including Champion Carcass Steer. AWL bulls were often champions and high sellers at the Brandon Bull Sale. Archie developed a very loyal private treaty customer base, which in many cases extended over two or three generations. In 1979, the Manitoba Simmental Association (MSA) hosted the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Annual Meeting with a show and sale. AWL showed the Champion Bull Calf and privately syndicated him with semen exported to many countries. In 1991, an AWL Production Sale was held at the Brandon Pool Yards. A polled bull calf, AWL High-Five 20A, brought $22,000. The calf was purchased by Manitoba breeders, RKT Simmentals, FM Simmentals, and WEB Simmentals. Archie was a member of many boards and associations over the years. He is a Past President of the Manitoba Hereford Association, the MSA and the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association. In 1995, Archie was the first recipient of the A.O. Henuset Memorial Distinguished Service Award, presented by the MSA to persons who have given unselfishly of their time to help establish the Simmental industry in Manitoba. In July 2002, Archie was inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame for his devotion and accomplishments as a purebred cattle breeder. The CSA recognized Archie’s contributions to the Simmental industry by inducting him into their prestigous Hall of Fame in 2004. While the AWL Simmental herd was dispersed in a very successful polled Simmental sale in conjunction with his friend, neighbor and fellow Simmental breeder, Craig Gibbs, Archie has retained his interest in the business and AWL shows up on the buyers list of the 2015 Harvest Hoedown Sale. In addition to his farm and cattle enterprises, Archie was a very active participant in affairs concerning veterans of the Armed Services. He worked for many years with local veterans to ensure they received their benefits and he wa a strong advocate for families who lost loved ones during service to ensure they received their proper pensions. In July 2016, Archie was awarded a Minister of Veterans’ Affairs Commendation. Archie spent countless hours and days involved with the creation and maintenance of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum at the Brandon Airport. In 2010, Archie became the chair of the Memorial Project Committee of the museum. Today, the RCAF Second Wold War Memorial, located on the grounds of the museum in Brandon, preserves the memory of 19,286 fallen service men and women, and educates younger generations of their sacrifices. This important part of Archie’s contribution to society is a whole other story. Archie will be remembered by many members of the Simmental family, young and old. Archie was well known across the country and beyond. He was always giving advice to his fellow Simmental breeders and will be missed in the conversations at the many shows and sales he used to be part of. The Simmental family sends our condolences to Archie’s family during this difficult time.
