SIMMENTAL FOCUS-7

....hi everybody, Happy New Year! and what’s not to be happy about, the weather’s good, cattle prices are staying up, and everyone I talk to is really upbeat about the upcoming bull sale season....yep, it’s a good time to be in the Simmental business....so if you are, congratulations!....and if yer not, well why not join us, we got it goin’ on......... ......in the news, we were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Ross Johnson, Saskatoon, SK, formerly of Lost River Ranches, Hanley, SK.....Ross was very active in the Simmental business back in the 80’s and 90’s and we got to know him pretty well...he was a great guy, friendly and helpful and always the diplomat....he moved on to the hog industry and we sort of lost touch, but he will always be remembered and sadly missed....our sympathies to his family...........a scholarship fund has been established at the University of Saskatchewan in Ross’ honor...if you would like more information about the fund contact the U. of S. College of Agriculture & Bioresources, 306-9664063, email trina.mortson@usask.ca......... ......get well wishes to Greg Goudy, Swan Lake Farms, Stoughton, SK who has been laid up with health issues recently......we hope to see you up and about soon Greg.......... .....congratulations to Ed & Lynne Anderson, Cherry Creek Farms, Boissevain, MB who were presented with the inaugural MSA Ambassador Award at the annual meeting in January...very deserving indeed as they are known near & far for their good fullblood Simmental cattle and their tireless promotion of the breed.....read on for a full account of their great story.......... ......and, South Korea has just given us the green light to resume exports of Canadian boneless beef under 30 months of age, which is more good news for our beef industry...hold on folks, this is just getting good....... ......well we are off on a winter holiday so if you could direct your calls regarding the March issue to Joanne Best, my Girl Friday, that would be great....but we’ll be back in time to catch the bulk of the bull sales...... it promises to be an exciting sale season so plan to get out to some of them, and we’ll see you there........

Lois

46-SIMMENTAL FOCUS

Andersons Honored with Inaugural MSA Ambassador Award Ed and Lynne Anderson purchased their farm from their friends the Ransom Family of Don, Bill, Brian and Sydney in 1994. All existing fencing was removed and replaced with five strand steel wire on three sides and a jack pine rail fence on the south side facing #3 Highway and the beautiful Turtle Mountains. Initially Ed and Lynne began showing show steers at Brandon Ag-Ex, Saskatoon Exhibition, Western Canadian Agribition and the Toronto Royal winning many grand championships, particularly Agribition where they had L-R: Darryl Perkin, MSA President; Lynne & Ed Anderson “five Grand Champions” and “one Reserve Grand Champion” over an eight year period, highlighted by a black angus Maine Anjou cross who swept Brandon winning $3,500, Saskatoon winning $3,500 and finally Agribition winning $25,000 for a total of $32,000 over three consecutive weekends. When the breed champions were paraded into the jam packed auditorium in Regina through a cloud of dry ice nearly everyone from every cattle barn were there to cheer on the Grand Champion and to see who would win. What a memory! About that time friend and Simmental breeder Glen Fisher encouraged us to get into the Simmental business. The first heifer purchased was a HREG Master Charge Daughter from Elton Simmentals Ernie and Darcy Hickson. She had been a champion heifer calf at the 1994 MSA Summer Show at Minnedosa. Jim Ranson states he still remembers her winning that day. Ed and Lynne purchased their first Full Fleckvieh in October 1998 from Henry Gunster at their Great Guns Dispersal for $10,000.00. Great Guns Julia became a cornerstone donor cow for many years. Cherry Creek was a charter member of the Main Event Full Fleckvieh sale for its duration, selling a heifer Cherry Creek Sonia to JB Livestock (Jason Bruketa), Calgary. This heifer went on to co-star in the movie “Twelve Mile Road” with the famous actor Tom Selleck. Mr. Selleck was amazed on how quiet she was and stated she actually drank antifreeze, “green colored Koolaid”, on command in the movie scene. We joined the Keystone Konnection Group in 1987 (25 years ago..wow!) It is truly an honor to be part of such a diverse and great group of super consigners. We always enjoy all of the presale promotions, marketing, emails and the endless telephone calls to prospective buyers and bidders. We encourage cattlemen to come and view our bulls and heifers before the sale. We have even assisted folks from Alberta to Quebec to come and analyze these calves and their dams themselves. We take pride in our cattle and really enjoy working with our marketing and promotion partners Blair and Lois McRae, Dalyse Robertson, Lois and Joanne at the Focus and certainly Margo Cartwright in Toronto with Simmental Country. What a super team to work with. How can the Keystone Cattle not sell well. A couple of highlight bulls we have sold through our groups annual Fall Sale were the high selling Cherry Creek Nygard purchased by Semex who have just announced that he has quickly become one of the world’s highest used bull in the breed with 52,785 doses sold to date. Cherry Creek Steele high selling bull at 17,250 to Prospect Hill Simmentals Ontario is also being drawn for worldwide use. Now that we are moving into calving time again, this is really our fun time of the cattle business, halter breaking, picking out our summer show string for the many summer fairs where we meet our old and new friends of all breeds. Thank you to the MSA for this honor. (The Andersons were presented with the inaugural MSA Ambassador Award at the MSA Annual Meeting in January in Brandon.)

48-SIMMENTAL FOCUS

Manitoba Youth Win Purebred Heifers through the Grant Moffat Herd Builder Award 2011 Kayla Zamrykut, a 20 year old producer from Rorketon; Braden Calvert, a 16 year old producer from Carberry; and Raina Syrnyk, a 16 year old producer from Ethelbert were the 2011 recipients of the Grant Moffat Herd builder Award. Grant Moffat, Holmsyde Charolais, Forrest, went missing in August, 2006. The funds generously donated by cattlemen, friends and relatives across the country were offered as a reward for tips leading to his whereabouts. After a year, a committee handling the funds made a decision to channel the money to Manitoba youth for the purpose of starting their own purebred herd.

Braden Calvert Grant invested a lot of energy in actively helping youth get started in the business and this seemed the most fitting way to utilize the funds. Over twenty applicants submitted essays, making the selection exceptionally difficult. The participants were evaluated on desire, need and previous expression of interest in the industry. To date 12 Juniors from across Manitoba have benefited from the program. Each of the three youth were awarded up to $2000 towards the purchase of a heifer selected from a Manitoba purebred sale.

Kayla Zamyrkut

Kayla Zamrykut purchased a Charolais heifer, Braden Calvert purchased a Polled Hereford heifer and Raina Syrnyk purchased a Black Angus Female to enhance or start their purebred herd of cattle. Thanks to the generous support of producers at the Fund Raising Auction at the Manitoba Beef Producers Annual Meetings, the Grant Moffat Herd Builder Awards will be presented again in 2012 with the application deadline being September 1st. For application and donation information, visit www.grantmoffat.com (Submitted by Lois McRae)

Bigview Stock Farm, owned and operated by Phil & Deena Schwenk, and their children Levi & Meagan, and Brandon Gattey. Bigview Stock Farm is located North of Coronation, AB, where the Schwenk family operates a mixed farm. The farm is composed of 350 mother cows, a 1500 head feedlot, and a grain operation, where much of the feed for the cowherd and feedlot is produced. Schwenk’s have been using Simmental bulls on their Black Angus cross, Black Maine cross cows for several years. They find Simmental bulls to be easy calving, and the calves have lots of depth of body and length. Although the pastures can often get dry in their area, Schwenk’s have found that the calves come in, in the fall with good frame and go on feed and fill out quickly. With the great depth of body and thickness these calves have, sometimes their weight can be deceiving: the calves came in this past fall 100-150 lbs. heavier than estimated due to this mass. Bigview feeds their own calves out to slaughter weight, as well as feed out another 1000 or so calves; these calves are all marketed directly to the packer in the spring and summer. Meagan Schwenk states, “The way our operation works, we need a calf we can put lbs. on. A Simmie cross calf has proven to do that, with their excellent length and depth of body and their good frame size. Simmie cross cows are also a pleasure to work with, as they have great maternal traits, and they have great udders that don’t wear out before the cow does. A Simmie cross cow is second to none.” Their calves speak for themselves: driving north of Coronation you can see large groups of black crossbred cows with powerful big calves at side. These are Bigview cattle, bred for generations for longevity, and performance in the feedlot and on the rail. Momma cows are easy keeping, and moderate framed with good udders and sound structure. Phil and Meagan both push the Simmental influence, in both their cowherd and in the cattle they bring into the feedlot. “Our Simmental bulls have good feet and legs and good structure-they pass this on to their calves which is important when they are in the feedlot as fat cattle as they hold up well when they are heavy. Our bulls have to, and will, cover a lot of ground in the summer and can keep up to the cows” states Meagan. (reprinted from albertasimmental.com)

Top Ten No Cost or Low Cost Marketing Tips for Your Cattle Operation-by Marnie Somers

In this sixth installment of Top Ten marketing tools, Lois and I discuss the need to comply with proper Internet etiquette, known as “Netiquette”. This term refers to the expectation that Internet users will follow generally accepted conventions, or social behaviours, when using the Internet. This article will describe “Netiquette” expectations when creating and distributing marketing email messages (Email permissions); and the right to use photographic images (Copyright permission). Let’s start with Email Do’s and Don’ts! ·Do add a compelling “Subject line” which can be searched and found easily. Don’t miss out on this prime piece of email real estate. An interesting “Subject line” hooks people into reading the content of your email – that’s the whole point. ·Do re-read and spell check your outgoing email – your professionalism is at stake. Set your email program to auto correct errors as you type, and do a final spell check before you hit the “send” button. ·Do remember to provide your contact information – all of it. Include links to your website, blog, Facebook page, etc. You can automate this in your email program under “insert signature”, and then you just have one click to insert all your contact info into each email you send out. It’s the courteous thing to do, so people can reach you. ·Don’t send “spam” (unsolicited commercial email). Only send email to those with whom you have an established relationship (see “Email Permissions” paragraph below). Spam has grown exponentially over the years and today amounts to approximately 80 to 85% of all the email in the world. It is arguably one of the “dark sides” of the Internet. ·DON’T USE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS in the body of your email – it is considered the equivalent of “shouting” at someone! IT’S NOT POLITE TO SHOUT!!! ·Don’t reveal other recipients’ email addresses in the “TO” or “CC” boxes. If you are sending out a bulk email message to 100 recipients - you are revealing what should be 100 confidential email addresses. Instead put your own name (or a generic name such as “Recipient List” and use your own email address) in the “TO” box. You can then put your 100 email address list in the “BCC” box – and no other recipients’ email addresses will show up in the delivered email copy. ·Don’t automatically hit the “reply all” button if you only need to “reply” to the original sender – everyone is overloaded with unwanted and unnecessary email. Don’t add to the problem. ·Don’t use a former email on “Subject A” to send a new email on “Subject B”. It makes it difficult for the receiver to file and retrieve. Start with a fresh email or, if you must use a previous email, at least be sure you change the subject line to your new topic. ·Don’t abuse the options of flagging your email as “important” or requesting a “delivered” or “read” receipt. If you always use these options (it’s the equivalent of “crying wolf”) and no one will pay attention to any of your emails. Email Permissions: So, when is a legitimate email marketing message not considered “Spam”? When the sending party has implicit or actual permission from the addressee to make contact. Typically this means having an established business connection with the addressee, such as someone who has: ·purchased a product or service from your business in the past – i.e. a previous customer ·purchased a product or service from your business recently – i.e. an existing customer ·signed up to receive a periodic newsletter, or special offers from your business ·“likes” or “follows” your business Facebook page, or blog ·initiated contact with your business by email, telephone, written correspondence, or submitted comments or an enquiry on your website’s guest book or “Contact Us” form ·provided you with their business card Let’s say your “Email permissions” list becomes too cumbersome to handle – you have so many contacts and/or you have so many email marketing messages to send out (woo hoo!). You can move up to using email campaign management software such as Constant Contact or Mail Chimp (some fees will apply) to automate the process and save you loads of time. Such software also provides statistics on delivered/ opened mail which can be useful. However, when you start using these programs you will be required to sign off that all your contacts are “Permission-based”. So you might as well keep your contact list(s) “clean” right from the start and not be considered a “Spammer”. (cont’d next page)

Photographic Copyright Permissions: Most of us are aware that it is not “kosher” to download proprietary software, music or other original content, without paying for it. Copying other’s artistic works for personal gain is prohibited by Canadian law. Copyright infringement seems to get fuzzy for some folks when it comes to purchasing photographic images. Just because you bought a photograph image from a professional photographer at a show or event, doesn’t necessarily give you the “all uses” rights to that photograph. You must ensure you have the photographer’s permission to use that image (digital or printed) for ads in publications, or placing on your website, or sending out with a media release. Some photographers build “all uses” rights into the original price of the images you purchase. Others may charge an additional fee. Contact the photographer to find out, and request written permission to reuse the photo(s). Get all your ducks in a row and have that documentation readily available. When submitting photographic images to a magazine editor, to your webmaster, or accompanying a media release, be sure to include the photographer’s name (for photo credit) and the information describing the image – a “cutline” or caption for the photo. Netiquette is not only a nicety; it’s a measure of your everyday business practices. It’s one more indication that you are a reputable person running a respectable operation. In the marketing industry we like to say “perception is reality”. What it means is that your customers’ perceptions of you are their reality, and will cause them to want to do business with you, or not! Guard your business image carefully. As mentioned in every previous installment, there is no one magic trick to build your business. It’s built through the cumulative efforts of your whole stable of marketing tools and strategies. And, they work so much harder for you when they support and complement each other. In the spirit of mutual learning and sharing, we invite your comments and feedback (positive and negative), which you can post on our websites or submit direct to the editor. See you next issue.
