FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Fall 2021
“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dear Sentinel Community,
This past summer has been full of blessings for the Seton Catholic Preparatory community. I am proud of our Historic Campus summer renovations project and the great start to the 2021-2022 school year. I am grateful for the support of our Seton community and benefactors who have given their time, talents, and treasures selflessly to get us to where we are today. Our combined efforts and faith in God’s abundant love continues to lead us to do great things.
I spent time this past summer reflecting on my experience leading Seton through the global COVID-19 pandemic. In doing so, kept thinking about how ended up at Seton and the journey along the way that starts and ends with faith in God. My wife and I moved here in June 2017 and we never could have anticipated what awaited us. It took a leap of faith to accept the principalship at Seton and move to a new city without any family or friends in the area for support. Our faith in God did not fail us as we have made lasting relationships within the Seton community.
It is faith and God’s will that have brought us all together. It is an act of faith by parents, students, alumni, faculty, and staff members who have all chosen to be a part of the Sentinel family. In God’s name, let us have faith as we advance Seton’s mission together so we can achieve the greatness God has planned for us.
Blessings,
Victor Serna Principal

At the end of the 2020-2021 academic year, all staff and faculty gathered for only the second tie of the year. The end of the year luncheon is a time to reflect on the year, say goodbye to those who will not be returning and celebrate the year’s accomplishments. There was an energetic spirit in the room as staff members reconnected and truly valued the chance to spend time together again in person. We said farewell to people who were moving on, and sent off our long-term, retiring staff members with tearful goodbyes and many thanks for being a part of our Seton community. The highlight of the luncheon was the awarding of two year’s worth of our St. Elizabeth Ann Seton awards.

SENTINEL NEWS
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award is awarded to a Seton Catholic Prep Faculty or Staff member who demonstrates the importance of God in their lives, either through participation in religious activities or volunteerism. Recipients also show concern for other Seton Catholic employees by being well-prepared for daily duties, having a positive influence on the school, and recognizing and acknowledging others’ strengths and accomplishments.
Since we were unable to gather and announce the 2019-2020 recipients in May of 2020, it was even more special that we were able to share the news at this year’s end-of-the-year Faculty & Staff luncheon. It was only the second time we had gathered together as a staff to share a meal in the 2020-21 school year, so the time together was particularly celebratory!
Senior Songwriter
Milani Alo ‘21 wrote and recorded a song titled Worthy of Life, now available on Spotify. Milani said she wrote the song during the Covid-19 pandemic when it could sometimes be difficult remembering how good life is. “I was really needing God to help me through the troubles and it was a way of calming myself.”
Lyrics:
When you give your heart away, someone can easily break it When you give someone your trust, they can easily take it God isn’t like people cause He’s seen it all before we can fall. Worthy of life are we that He’s willing to die for me
Congratulations to the IT department as our 2019-20 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award recipients! This team worked tirelessly last year to adapt to a complete change in procedure, and offer assistance to students, staff, and faculty as we pivoted to online learning.
The 2020-2021 recipient was Principal Victor Serna for his leadership, strength and care for the students and staff during the ever fluctuating conditions. Victor ensured that no school time was lost transitioning between online and in person learning, and carefully considered all perspectives while coordinating with families throughout the year. Congratulations Victor!
Giving up all He had so I’d know the life He planned. Worthy of life are we (worthy) that He’s willing to die for me (die for me)
Giving up all He had so I’d know the life He planned. He put himself on the cross,
so that wouldn’t be lost He takes away my pain and all my suffering. He knows just what to do when I feel like my heart’s in two Calming me in every way, never leading me astray. Worthy of life are we that He’s willing to die for me
Giving up all He had so I’d know the life He planned. Worthy of life are we (worthy) that He’s willing to die for me (die for me)
Giving up all he Had so I’d know the life He planned. He puts his people first so we no longer have to thirst

SETON CATHOLIC GRADUATE ENTERS PRIESTHOOD
By: Nicki Escudero ‘02
When Ian Wintering ‘11 attended the Kairos retreat his junior year at Seton Catholic Preparatory, he’d never had a “personal encounter with Christ.” He only went to the retreat because a friend invited him. He regularly attended Mass, but he hadn’t been to adoration or closely examined his faith.
He also had a specific view of what the priesthood was like.
“I had never known a priest by his name,” says Fr. Ian. “All the priests I knew were old. I thought they all lived in convents with candles, writing documents with feather pens. It didn’t occur to me that a priest could be a modern man, ‘normal’ and cool.”
At Kairos, Fr. Ian joined other students in an hour of silent prayer. In the northern Arizona woods, he reflected on sacrifices the Apostles made in their devotion to Jesus. Fr. Ian says he questioned whether he took his faith seriously enough to give his life to Christ like they did.
That moment on Kairos planted the seed for Fr. Ian that the priesthood might be calling. This past June, after eight years in seminary and serving as a deacon in Colorado, the 2011 Seton graduate and Arizona native was ordained as a priest. He’s now the associate pastor at San Francisco de Asís in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Different Kind of Fatherhood
At his first Kairos, Fr. Ian says he told a lie. He told other attendees he felt called to marriage, because it’s what he wanted to believe.
Indeed, Fr. Ian says his lifelong dream was to get married, become a father and teach his son how to play baseball. That’s partly why it took several years to decide on priesthood.
Fr. Ian continued to attend and lead Kairos retreats, both as a Seton student and as an alumni leader. He formed a deep bond with Father Will Schmid, who was then the chaplain and a theology teacher at Seton. Today, Fr. Will is the pastor at San Francisco de Asís.
After high school, Fr. Ian studied film production at Scottsdale Community College. During that time, he went on a mission trip to New Mexico. On that trip, Dan Ngyuen, a former Seton theology teacher, asked Fr. Ian if he’d considered the priesthood.
Fr. Ian responded he had, but he wanted to finish school first before making that decision. He had some hesitations about becoming a priest, including the life he thought he’d have to give up.
“I’ll never forget, his response was, ‘That’s totally normal,’” says Fr. Ian. “’If you weren’t afraid, would be concerned. But whatever you do, never make a decision out of fear.’ That was like a ton of bricks on the logic
“Any environment Ian is in, he likes to envision how things can grow and become better,” says Ryan. “He loves tradition, order and structure, but he also looks at how he can invest in things and improve them.”
Stephen recently had his first child and Fr. Ian will preside over the baptism. Stephen said he’s enjoyed watching Fr. Ian’s spiritual journey evolve.
“Ian has always been able to bring people together in a meaningful way,” Stephen says. “I think he’s going to be a great leader.”
Ordained June 5, 2021 at All Saints Parish
fortress I built up against going to seminary. He just demolished it.”
Fr. Ian approached Fr. Will, then the pastor at St. Mary Magdalene in Gilbert, about his interest in becoming a priest. Fr. Will invited him to move into the rectory while he awaited entry into seminary. During this “seminary discernment program” created specifically for him, Fr. Ian’s interest in joining the priesthood solidified.
As for Fr. Ian’s desire to become a father, he’s realized that goal, just in a different way.
“As a priest, I’m participating in the ultimate fatherhood, the fatherhood of God the Father, which is more than I could have ever asked for,” he says.
Lifelong Preparation
Though Fr. Ian’s decision to become a priest came as a college student, he’s been preparing to serve others his whole life. At Seton, he and his friends created a “Catholic culture” among themselves. His circle included Stephen Ryan, class of 2012, who is now a science teacher at Seton.
Fr. Ian and Stephen became friends doing plays together and grew closer when Fr. Ian led Stephen’s Kairos retreat. Stephen was also on that mission trip that transformed Fr. Ian’s journey.
Stephen says Fr. Ian has always been a very sincere person, who wasn’t afraid to hold Stephen accountable or push him out of his comfort zone.
Sharing Wisdom
Today, Fr. Ian’s influence extends beyond church. With Fr. Will, Fr. Ian once helped cohost the faith-based podcast Northern Fathers. Fr. Ian and Fr. Will are also establishing a fraternal support group in northern Arizona.
Fr. Will says it’s a joy to work with Fr. Ian after mentoring him. One of Fr. Ian’s strengths, Fr. Will says, is his ability to disarm those who are afraid to let the Lord work in their hearts.
“Ian is a genuine man,” says Fr. Will. “He’s relatable. He loves life. He loves asking important questions. think a lot of people are going to be moved by his ability to speak to the human experience. It’s this great joy to
FAITH
welcome him into the priestly family, serve side-by-side and get to call him my brother.”
Fr. Ian says that though he had doubts about becoming a priest, his journey taught him God would not call him to a vocation that wouldn’t make him happy. He’s thrilled to be at his dream assignment in Flagstaff, a place where he can pursue hobbies like camping, skiing and fishing.
As a priest, Fr. Ian enjoys celebrating Mass and being a confessor. He says the sacrament of confession has meaningfully impacted his life.
“The Lord has done so much for me,
Please keep our alumni who are in the seminary in your prayers.
and know what this sacrament means to me,” he says. “To be able to give that to others, through Christ, is incredible.”
For Seton students considering Kairos, Fr. Ian says every person he’s met who’s attended Kairos has said it’s changed their life. From the opportunity to pray in silence, to talking about prayer experiences with fellow classmates, he says Kairos offers a unique spiritual experience to Seton students, just like it did for him.

By: Pamela K. Hollarbach, Assistant Principal
A native of Illinois moved to Arizona as a high school freshman. After graduating from Paradise Valley High School I decided to pursue my love of Fine Arts and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Arizona State University - with a secondary teaching certificate. – go Sun Devils!
After 18 years in the classroom, where I loved teaching Dance, received my Masters in Educational Counseling (2002) and became a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s High School. In 2008 I transitioned to Seton Catholic where I have happily served as a Counselor for the past 13 years. In 2018 I began serving as Director of Counseling. This has been an exciting time in my educational career with many growth opportunities.
have two sons who are happily married, and live in the valley. They, my husband and my two adorable grandchildren bring me great joy. My favorite activities include walking in the mountains and the beach, reading and knitting! recently went kayaking and would love to explore that as a future endeavor!
am excited and ready to take on this new phase of my educational career, especially as we transition back to what a new “normal” school day and year. look forward to serving the Seton Community with the courage needed to face each challenge, the faith to serve the members of the community and the determination and love to make a positive difference.
SENTINEL SUCCESS
By Pamela K. Hollarbach, Assistant Principal
Sentinel Success is a new program being introduced in the fall of 2021 and is designed to broaden student support, while addressing the needs of a diverse group of learners who have a wide range of learning needs. An intentional effort on Seton’s part to give specific concentrated time to all students who need or want extra support, Sentinel Success embeds regular meeting time into the school day for students and teachers to collaborate towards greater academic success.
Aligning with our focus on academic excellence within a Catholic faith community, Sentinel Success offers a structured approach to help our students to achieve their fullest potential. This program supports one of the goals of Principal’s Serna’s 10-year vision: to celebrate the extraordinary academic outcomes of all students who seek a Catholic, college preparatory education.
How it Works
Sentinel Success is a 40-minute period in the middle of the school day that will meet twice, weekly. Students will be assigned a Sentinel Success room with a teacher where they will report for attendance. Students can request to meet with a teacher, and a teacher can request to meet with students through the Student Support Time Portal. After checking in, students will go to their scheduled appointments to work with a teacher one-on-one or in small groups. Only students with appointments through the Student Support Time Portal will be allowed to leave their Sentinel Success class. If a student does not have a scheduled appointment, he/she can use the time to complete homework, read or study.
An additional benefit to the success period is that it provides support and opportunity for students heavily involved in extracurricular activities to further their studies during the school day, in order to provide a balanced lifestyle.

The 2021 Girls Basketball season wasn’t even supposed to happen. Yet things started to return to normal just in time, and our athletes and coaches rose to the occasion, coming away with another state championship for Seton Catholic Prep! This year’s team was resilient and determined to say the least, pushing through the extra challenge of playing in masks this season. They entered the State Championship game on March 2 undefeated, and continued their streak with a win over Salpointe Catholic School (Tucson) for the title, 70-62.
“This was an extremely challenging year for everyone and finishing with a championship speaks volumes about our players’ grit, perseverance, and mental toughness. I am so proud of our girls and am so happy we were able to hold off such a talented team from Salpointe,” Coach Karen Self said. This win was the third state championship for the seniors, and championship number 12 for Coach Self, who is being inducted into Seton’s Hall of Fame in October. She holds the state record for the number of championships for basketball, as well as many other titles, awards and recognitions from the state of Arizona and AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association).

New Varsity Soccer Coach Named
Grant Wagner has been named as the new Head Coach for both girls and boys Varsity Soccer teams. “We are excited to have Grant back as part of the Sentinel family,” Gregg Buchanan, Athletic Director said. “We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Grant’s coaching experience, and we are excited to be handing the keys of both programs over to him. We believe that he will elevate both programs to a high standard of excellence.”
Coach Wagner spent his last 2 seasons as the head coach at Queen Creek High School but is no stranger to Sentinel soccer. Previously he coached as an assistant and head coach for the Girls Soccer team from 2013-2018, winning a region title during the 2017 season. “I’m extremely elated to be back at Seton where truly feel at home,” Wagner said. “I hold sure the belief that both programs will be guided to the next level of greatness. Together, we will see this program achieve
‘legendary status’ and I’m sure we will see our workings come to fruition shortly.”
With Wagner as Head Coach for both the girls and boys teams, the coaching set up will have a slightly different structure this year. He will be supported by strong assistant coaches for each team, and girls and boys games will be played in the same location so he is present for both.

PHOTO FINISH
By: Paula Parian ‘23
I took Photography because always had an interest in taking pictures. I thought the class provided a great opportunity for me to learn the basic principles and understandings of photography and would improve how I take photos. think learning photography is so important because it creates lasting memories. With many people having a phone with a camera on hand everywhere they go, it gives them the ability to capture the wonderful moments in life so they can be able to look back on it in the future.
I’ve enjoyed photography class very much. Playing around with Photoshop was really fun and I’ve learned that using Photoshop is easier than I thought!
Everything we have done in the class has been a pleasure to do, but I think our project on surrealism would be my favorite. It focused on creating an image that was realistic, but had a dreamlike quality. Creating the image involved playing around with many of the bells and whistles of Photoshop. It was quite enjoyable and the finished product looked whimsical!
I will definitely continue with this as a hobby. This class has given me a deeper appreciation of photography. It has taught me that it is more than just taking a quick snap of a moment. It is about taking the time to look through different perspectives and to experiment to capture the beauty of a subject.

MEET THE NEW “DIRECTOR OF FUN!”
Brittany Ecker, Director of Student Involvement and Activities
Ms. Ecker has been a member of the Seton Catholic community since 2019. Prior to coming to SCP, Ms. Ecker taught theology and coached competitive and sideline cheerleading at several Catholic high schools in Missouri and Minnesota. She also has experience as an adjunct college business professor, school and parish Youth Minister, Director of Jr. and Sr. High Faith Formation, and high school Admissions Counselor. Ms. Ecker has a Masters of Arts in Theology, and is working towards a Masters of Arts in Education and School Administration Licensure. Ms. Ecker is also a member of the Theology Department at Seton. She loves photography and spending time with her family outdoors.
“My new title will be the Director of Student Involvement and Activities. The title has changed since that of my predecessor because the focus of the position is on increasing student involvement in all aspects of our school. I’d like to consider myself the “Director of Fun” across four pillars on which believe our community rests--Learning, Faith, Community and Service. Using those pillars combined with the Charisms of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (love, determination, courage and faith), hope to create an atmosphere where all students feel like they truly belong.”
What are you most excited about for your new position?
I’m most excited to be able to work with the entire Seton Community! believe that school pride and spirit is infectious. I’d like to start spreading Seton fever first in my colleagues and then in the students we serve.
What project are you most excited about?
I’m most excited about adding more pep rallies in the Quad and House gatherings. Anytime we can gather to foster community and school spirit, we start to build an identity as a Sentinel family. want students to leave their years at Seton with not only a great foundational education but amazing memories and lasting friendships.
Are there any major changes coming?
I’d like to say that the biggest change will take place in the student experience. want students (and faculty and staff) to truly enjoy coming to school. My hope is that the little things we can do throughout the day will make a big impact.
What is something you hope to accomplish this year?
It’s something small, but ALL students will know the words to the school’s fight song and stand and clap while it’s being played at all assemblies, games, and events!
What is a long term goal you will be working towards?
It’s a bold statement, but now it’s officially in writing: I will get every student to be involved in at least one co-curricular activity (a sport, a club, drama, music, etc). To me, being involved beyond the classroom is an integral part of the high school experience.
Do you have any hobbies?
love taking photos and scrapbooking! My amazing husband got me a brand new camera (that’s not my phone) for Christmas and cannot wait to use it at all of Seton’s events, activities and athletics!
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?
My absolute favorite food in the whole wide world is french fries -- seasoned curly fries, hot, a little crispy, and with cold Heinz ketchup to be exact. I’d survive the rest of my life eating that and only that.

for a very generous gift from the Dorine Ruwart family. Dorine’s sons Mark and Patrick attended Seton at its original campus. Sadly, the ‘72 and ‘75 graduates passed away in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Dorine, a widow and longtime medical professional who had retired as the head surgical nurse at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa, passed away in July of 2020.
In her will, Dorine specified that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her house would be directed to Seton. Dr. Maurice Fortin, Dorine’s nephew and executor of her estate, worked with Director of Advancement Jim Pogge to develop a meaningful tribute to the Ruwart family. The duo created two pathways for the bequest: supporting scholarships and the Historic Campus Renovation.
“Dorine was a deeply faith-filled woman and cherished her parish, Queen of Peace. She was also a strong advocate for education, confident that it changes lives. I was humbled that she

In honor of their late parents, the Campanella children donated funds for this renovation during our 65th Anniversary Gala in August, 2020. Joseph and Katharine Campanella were tireless supporters of Seton.
entrusted me to be the executor of her estate. When I read her will stating that proceeds from her estate would benefit both Queen of Peace students and Seton, I knew that this was the capstone of her lifelong commitment to faith and education,” Fortin shared.
Part of the proceeds from the house established a permanently endowed fund called the Ruwart Family Memorial Scholarship. This fund will provide four scholarships each year for graduates from Queen of Peace who now attend Seton. One student in each grade will receive a scholarship of at least $500 annually.
As the fund grows, the scholarship amounts will increase as well. Fortin noted that “Aunt Dorine would be thrilled that Queen of Peace students will be able to attend Seton because of her endowed scholarship.”
Jumping on the school’s momentum for the Historic Campus Renovation, Fortin directed a second part of the proceeds to underwrite one of the updated science labs. “Since she was a
nurse, I know she would be very proud that a science lab is now named in honor of her family. It is a wonderful use of these funds,” said Fortin. Planned gifts like the Ruwart bequest have a lasting impact on the lives of Seton students. Fortin recognizes this and shares, “When I consulted with her brother and two sisters, they were overwhelmed and so pleased with how her donation will be a lasting memorial to her and her family. Aunt Dorine has inspired my wife Theresa and me to update our wills to benefit those organizations dear to us.”
Stoll Family creates a new Endowed Scholarship
Mark and Sylvia Stoll graduated in Seton’s first class in 1958. Their four children graduated in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, and their last two grandchildren graduated this past Spring.
After Mark Sr. passed away earlier this year, the four children created the Mark and Sylvia Endowed Scholarship in honor of their parents. Every year, one student in each grade will earn a scholarship to Seton, and the scholarship is renewable each year.
In May, Principal Victor Serna announced this new scholarship and presented the first winners with their awards. Adding to the moment was the fact that the scholarship was a complete surprise to Sylvia! We were so happy to share this moment with one of our longest running Legacy Families.

By: Nicki Escudero ‘02
Seton’s Safety and Security Coordinator Jack Barten has experience that’s straight out of high-action movies. As a sniper with the original SWAT team that debuted with the Chandler Police Department in 1981, Barten spent 25 years as part of an elite group of officers trained in special tactics, with experience in explosives, robotics and negotiation. Barten and his team dealt with a variety of high-stakes circumstances, including hostage situations and criminal barricading.
Barten’s also a military veteran, who was assigned to an infantry unit at Fort Hood in Texas with the U.S. Army. He knows how to handle pressure and brought his diverse expertise to Seton, where he’s managed security since 2014.
“Seton has been progressively improving security for the campus since I’ve been here,” says Barten. Since he has been at Seton, security gates were added to the perimeter of the campus.
Veteran Experience
Seton isn’t Barten’s first time working on school campuses. During his 31-year career as a Chandler police officer, he was a school resource officer and a D.A.R.E. instructor. He also taught classes at all school levels as a Police Assisting Youth in Schools (PAYS) Officer.
His robust career also includes work in crime scenes and criminal investigations, property crimes, financial crimes, asset forfeiture and internal affairs. He also has experience as a Phoenix police training officer and patrol sergeant. It’s safe to say the Seton community is in experienced hands.
“Jack’s law enforcement background has made an immense impact on the overall safety of our campus,” says Julie Grindey, Seton’s Dean of Students. “Jack has continued to strengthen our emergency response plans through his involvement in local school safety organizations. He has improved the overall traffic flow on campus. We now have a Campus Safety Office, where he can see all 58 security cameras at once.”
The number of security cameras today is a huge leap from the six in place back when Barten arrived. Since he has been at Seton, there are also security gates in place on the perimeter of the campus.
Barten’s typical day involves controlling the flow of traffic, monitoring security cameras, patrolling the campus and, his favorite part, connecting with students, staff and parents. Barten’s long relationship with the Chandler Police Department is also an asset. He’s in charge of all vehicle accidents and criminal investigations on the property, giving police direction and acting as a witness when necessary.
“Jack has been instrumental in arranging safety presentations for both our students and parents with Chandler police officers and has been able to assist students and parents when they have had questions regarding police department policy and procedures,” Grindey says. “Jack’s professional presence on campus brings a safe and secure feeling for students, parents, faculty and staff.”
Off-Duty Time
When Barten is off-duty, life is a little more relaxed. He cherishes time with his family, including three daughters and six grandkids. His family hikes, camps and enjoys the outdoors at the family’s home in northern Arizona.
Barten has strong ties to Arizona, having lived in the state since he was 1 year old. He attended Chandler school districts through Chandler High School and received a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from University of Phoenix.
At Seton, Barten and the administrative team continue to evaluate ways to make the campus even more secure.
“The school is always looking ahead,” Barten says. “Seton’s thought process is, we’re a family here. We’re always open to improving the safety and security of the children.”

22 THE SENTINEL SHIELD Fall 2021 THE SENTINEL SHIELD Fall 2021 23
After being postponed from last Fall, the 2020 Hall of Fame was held on May 22. The evening had a special excitement as we were able to gather as a community to honor our inductees.
Tom Escobedo, Class of 1963
Tom has dedicated much of his retirement time to working with at-risk youth at iCan, a non-profit organization located in Chandler where he is held in high esteem. In the community garden, Tom has developed programs to teach gardening, showing the youth how their hard work and persistence can produce great results. Tom also introduces science experiments, design, construction, and even urban planning to the youth. They learn and practice patience, discipline, consistency and caring through his programs. Tom’s gentle approach and the soothing energy of the garden have been of genuine benefit to several of the youth who are experiencing challenges at home and/ or school.
Armando Bernasconi, Class of 1993
Armando began Quality Connections in Flagstaff, Arizona which helps individuals with developmental disabilities become independent, productive members of the community. QC provides a variety of employment and training services, a licensed residential program, in-home support services, a Montessori-based adult day program, child care center and an innovative social enterprise. Quality Connections has become the leading community rehabilitation program in Northern Arizona, successfully serving over 2,500 individuals since 1999.
Joe was a true believer in Seton Catholic’s mission. In the early 2000’s, he served in an advisory capacity for the school leadership and Advancement Office. Joe was deeply engaged in the life of the school as an avid sports fan and by attending many school activities. As the retired CEO and founder of Campanella Enterprises, Joe’s expertise was a major influence in the expansion of the campus. Under Joe’s leadership, the Capital Campaigns were extremely successful, resulting in the creation of our beautiful Chapel, the Fine Arts building, and the Athletics’ Concession building.
Shannon Desmond, Class of 2007
Shannon helped lead her Varsity Soccer team to 4 state championships and ended her career undefeated against 1A, 2A and 3A schools. Her senior year she had 43 goals and 30 assists. Shannon was a leader on the team as Captain, receiving many recognitions for her talent including being named to the Arizona Republic First Team All State and the East Valley Tribune First Team. Not surprisingly, Shannon received an athletic scholarship to Seton Hall University, as well as an academic scholarship because of her accomplishments in the classroom. Her successes continued while at Seton Hall, where she was named Seton Hall University’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, and awarded the Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award from the Big East Conference.
The 2021 Hall of Fame will be held on October 16, 2021 and will recognize these inductees:
Karen Self
Coach Karen Self will begin her 30th year as the Girls Varsity Basketball Coach at Seton Catholic this winter. In the 2020-21 season, she led the team to the State Championship yet again, achieving a remarkable 12th Championship in her career which broke the record for the state of Arizona!
1997 Girls Varsity Basketball Team
The first girls Basketball championship for Seton Catholic was earned by the 1997 team. The team beat Duncan High School in the State Championship Game.
Tiffany Pederson Berge ‘01
Tiffany played Varsity Volleyball for her 4 years at Seton and was awarded numerous recognitions, including Most Valuable Player and team captain. She was also on the 1998 Girls Basketball Championship team and competed in Track & Field. Tiffany won the state championship in the high jump, medaled in both the long jump and triple jump, and placed 4th in the Junior National Heptathlon. She is the first Seton Volleyball player to earn a full athletic scholarship to a Division school for Volleyball.

ANNUAL REPORT 2020 - 2021
ENDOWMENTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Seton Catholic Preparatory General Endowment Fund
The Seton Catholic Preparatory General Endowment Fund is housed at the Catholic Community Foundation (CCF) of Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1983, CCF manages endowment funds for 150 agencies, including 70 parishes and 41 schools within the Diocese of Phoenix. CCF provides an invaluable opportunity for organizations, like Seton Catholic Prep, to leave a legacy of giving that will support future needs in perpetuity.
Contributions to our Endowment are invested and managed by CCF, with the earnings being distributed for scholarships.
Sisters of Charity Scholarship Fund
The Sisters of Charity Scholarship Fund was established in May 2009 in honor of the retirement of Sister Joan Marie Madden, who faithfully served 41 years at Seton Catholic Prep. In keeping with Sr. Joan Marie’s wishes, the scholarship fund will provide tuition assistance for students who qualify for admission but require financial assistance.
Donna Olsen Scholarship
Named for a Seton Catholic Prep student who lost her long-fought battle against cancer, the Donna Olsen Scholarship was established in 1991. The school awards one $500 scholarship per year to a student who shares the obstacles or special circumstances he/she overcame to attend Seton.
Joseph Kahler Memorial Endowment Fund
The Joe Kahler Memorial Endowment Fund was created to help all students participate in athletics at Seton, regardless of their financial situation. Funds go toward the costs associated with teams.
DONORS: Honeywell International Charity Matching
Mark and Sylvia Stoll Endowed Scholarship
Created by a donation from the children of Mark and Sylvia Stoll, the Mark and Sylvia Stoll Endowed Scholarship provides needbased scholarships to support incoming and returning students who actively participate in extracurricular activities. The school awards four $1,500 scholarships (one per grade level) to students from St. Mary-Basha Catholic School during each academic year. Recipients can apply for and receive the award in subsequent years as long as they meet the criteria. 4 students have been named to receive the Stoll Family Scholarship for the 2021-22 school year.
Michael Eubanks Scholarship Fund
The Michael Eubanks Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Seton alumnus, Michael Eubanks ’86, who died in a tragic car accident in 2001. Michael served the Seton Catholic Prep community as a teacher, Athletic Director and Dean of Students.
One $500 scholarship is offered each year for sophomores through seniors who can demonstrate service to others and Catholic morals and values.
Ronnie Felix Memorial Scholarship
Named for the son and nephew of a number of early Seton Alumni, this $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a hispanic student living in Chandler, Mesa or Gilbert. Applicants must have applied to CEA and then complete the Ronnie Felix Scholarship application.
Ruwart Family Memorial Scholarship
Created by a bequest from the estate of Patrick D. Ruwart ‘75, in memory of his mother Dorine D. Ruwart, the Ruwart Family Memorial Scholarship Fund provides need-based scholarships to support incoming and returning students who actively participate in extracurricular activities. The school awards four scholarships (one per grade level) to students from Queen of Peace Catholic School during each academic year. Recipients can apply for and receive the award in subsequent years as long as they meet the criteria. Awards will begin in the 2021-22 school year.
Stephen J. Stark Trust Endowment Fund
The Stephen J. Stark Endowment Fund was established in 2020 through an estate bequest from Stephen J. Stark. This Fund was created to develop and encourage student athletes at Seton Catholic Preparatory.
