Dr. Amy E. Steele, Ph.D., is an inspiring social ethicist, ordained minister, entrepreneur, and certified spiritual director with a passion for fostering meaningful dialogue and personal growth. With over 25 years of experience, she has led transformative conversations and classes on topics such as religion and society, spiritual formation, religious history, and women's civil rights history. A devoted scholar of Howard Thurman’s works, Dr. Amy is committed to the art of listening, asking thought-provoking questions, and curating narratives that promote soulful well-being.
Above all, she cherishes her role as a mother to her wonderful college-aged son. In her free time, Dr. Amy finds joy in writing, enjoying good music, sharing meals with loved ones, and embracing the tranquility of nature. Deeply rooted in the culture of the U.S. South, she travels to explore the interconnectedness of our global community, seeking to deepen her understanding of hope, freedom, redemption, and prophetic love.
As the new campus minister at the TSU Wesley Foundation, Dr. Amy looks forward to journeying alongside students, nurturing their spiritual growth, and fostering a vibrant community of faith.
“I SAY TO YOU TODAY, MY FRIENDS, NOT IN SPITE OF THE DIFFICULTIES AND FRUSTRATIONS OF THE MOMENT, I STILL HAVE A DREAM.” -MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
Welcome back, alums, board members, students, friends, and family! When I stepped into this new position on December 1, 2024, I knew I was joining a rich legacy of ministry at TSU Wesley. I had heard the name of my most immediate predecessor, the Reverend Michele Morton, for at least a decade. Now, witnessing that legacy up close, I celebrate the foundation that she built. Having spent over a decade myself in student affairs, I know that legacies like hers are not grown overnight but cultivated through long days (and some long nights) with attention to purpose and possibility.
I have inherited a tradition of community that I plan to nurture and grow. In my first 30 days, the Genesis Ministry at Howard Congregational United Church of Christ fulfilled my kitchen wish list! And Hamilton United Methodist Church fulfilled my office wish list! Patterson Memorial United Methodist Church reached out to find out how it could help our residents!
And individuals like you continue to make generous financial contributions. Each gift is a tangible reminder that the community is invested in this ministry. And despite the numerous difficulties and frustrations of the present moment surrounding the campus and our world, like King, I remain a dreamer. Though it may seem trite and overdone, I, too, have a dream.

I have a dream that these young adults will pursue with resilience a faith that satisfies the soul. I have a dream that these young adults will celebrate with familiarity a history that sustains their struggle. I have a dream that these young adults will find their rightful place in public life armed with a liberating gospel. Oh, my friends, I, too, have a dream. And with your help, I will work towards those ends. Join me if you dare pray for a new world built upon legacy!
