When it needed to refurbish and update the training room at its UK headquarters, the Fire Protection Association (FPA) turned to Promat UK. Promat supplied SUPALUX, a non-combustible calcium silicate board, Promat DURASTEEL composite panels for fire and blast protection, Promat TL Board, designed for the thermal upgrading of semiexposed concrete decks - and the Promat FLAMEBRAKER grid system, used with SUPALUX for industrial linings. "The display is very positive and is exactly what is required here at our training facilities,” says Paul Reade, Fire Safety Technical Advisor with the FPA.

The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) AGM and Conference was held mid-May at the stunning Tortworth Court Hotel, in Gloucestershire: both business and celebration were on the agenda. The business session took place on Saturday morning and was well attended by Guild members, new and old. Maria Powell, Managing Director of the Lorient Group – a respected designer and manufacturer of architectural door seals was appointed Guild President for the next two years. Maria took up her tenure with immediate effect; and paid tribute to the valuable contribution of outgoing President John Jefferies during his term of office.

SIKA SARNAFIL OUT ON TOP Enquiry 180

It has been a fantastic year so far for Sika Sarnafil, with numerous projects, contractors and architects using its roofing products winning prestigious awards, right across the UK. Most recently, the Joseph Black Building at the King’s Buildings Campus at the University of Edinburgh won the Single Ply Roofing category in the tenth NFRC National Roofing Awards. Sarnafil Membrane S327-15EL in patina green was installed, as the planners stipulated that the product must be in keeping with the rest of the copper roofs on the listed building. Earlier in the year at the RIBA South East Regional Awards, the top honour – Building of the Year Award – went to Haworth Tompkins for its restoration of the Chichester Festival Theatre. The refurbishment also picked up the Sustainability Award, sponsored by Sika, and the Conservation Award. A further prize winning project, the £31 million Redcar Leisure and Community Centre, won the Regeneration Award at the RICS North East Awards. The project was part of the local council’s aim to get more people involved in sport and leisure in the area. The Build Show, part of UK Construction Week, has revealed details of its wide-ranging seminar programme for the event, which takes place at the Birmingham NEC 6 – 8 October. The seminar programme is split into the Homebuilding and Site Zones, with a varied schedule of industry leading speakers in each. Visitors will also be able access additional content such as the Careers Centre in association with the House Builders Federation, a commercial vehicle test drive zone and a dedicated section for civil engineering. Five employees at Howarth Timber’s York branch are celebrating 175 years’ combined service – in the same year the company celebrates its 175th anniversary! David Marshall, Steve Winters, Chris Peart, Kevin Robertson and David Fogg have all clocked up more than 30 years’ service each with the company. Chris recently celebrated 30 years with the branch, while David is the longest serving employee with 44 years under his belt.
