Bocci lights up refurbished Canada House in Trafalgar Square
57.157 IS A LARGE-SCALE LIGHT INSTALLATION DESIGNED BY OMER ARBEL AND PRODUCED BY DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, BOCCI.
Comprised of 157 individual glass pieces, this bespoke installation reflects the abundant natural light in the Canada House stairway – giving visitors a more poignant way to perceive and inhabit this important national space.
Material exploration served as the fundamental departure point for designing 57. “We began with the idea that we can manipulate the malleability of glass based on its temperature,” says Omer Arbel, Creative Director at Bocci.
The novel fabrication process traps voids of air, in different sizes and configurations, within a glass matrix, which is then dipped into grey glass to create a cohesive whole. By virtue of their creation, each handmade 57 piece is completely unique. “When the piece is unlit, each piece is mute and loosely resembles a rain cloud in shape,” says Arbel. “Once illuminated, an internal universe comes alive.”
57.157 introduces a one-way mirror coating applied to the individual glass pieces, allowing them to respond optically both to each other, and to the ambient light that floods the stairwell. The tension between eye-level pieces and a high tangle of glass and wire creates areas of intensity and relative calm, and a viceral experience of the volume.
“It is a pleasure to be able to feature the work of Canadian talents Omer Arbel and Bocci here at Canada House,” says Mr. Gordon Campbell, High Commissioner for Canada. “This heritage building represents our country’s front door to the United Kingdom and we are very proud that it will serve as a true showcase of the very best of Canadian design. Our grand staircase, which dates from 1829 is, I would venture, even more grand today thanks to this stunning addition.”
Omer Arbel added: "There is a strange mystery that occurs when these pieces are filled with diffuse light. They become somehow evocative of more than both glass and fabric; they become something new entirely.”
Bocci is a decade-old design and manufacturing company based in Vancouver, Canada and Berlin, Germany. Founded in 2005 under the creative directorship of Omer Arbel, Bocci has a respected and growing portfolio of contemporary design.
The revitalization of Canada House has endeavoured to not only renew the 200-yearold Grade II listed heritage building on Trafalgar Square, but also connect the Chancery to the adjacent building at 2-4 Cockspur Street. As a result, for the first time in 50 years, Canadian High Commission staff are under one roof, in one of the world’s most iconic squares. In embarking on this project, the Government of Canada wanted to both preserve the integrity of this key historic building and to create a new Canada House to embody our country in the 21st Century.

DuPont Corian scores for Southampton FC
CD UK has supplied DuPont™ Corian® at Southampton Football Club's new training facilities in Marchwood. Named after the club's former owner, Marcus Liebherr, the £40m football development and support centre is a top class training facility built by Bouygues UK and designed by AFL architects. The building houses the club's sports science, scouting and recruitment, football administration and medical departments, as well as training, changing and dining facilities.
In keeping with the football theme, fabricator Ridon Joinery created centrepiece tables and desks in the training area, the first team dining room and the auditorium. The installation included a 6m long high level table with a goal post design finished in Corian Glacier White in the dining room. Separately, the first team dining area was designed to be informal but high quality. In this area the tables are made from Corian Lava rock solid surface material with a grey laminated circular base, achieving the maximum use of the available space.
For the auditorium, the Club wanted a contemporary, technical ambience that would support the needs of both the media and the Club itself. Ridon Joinery designed a desk using Corian Lava Rock to give the appearance of a natural finish stone in keeping with the theme throughout the pavilion. The desk ends were made from Corian Deep Grey.
The club is now following the finishes through into the stadium using DuPont Corian to update the bar areas, dining rooms and the main reception desk.
