Plumis Automist facilitates conversion of Art Deco houses
PLUMIS AUTOMIST HAS BEEN USED TO PROVIDE AN INNOVATIVE FIRE SAFETY SOLUTION FOR THE CONVERSION OF A STUNNING COLLECTION OF ART DECO HOUSES IN TWICKENHAM, MIDWAY BETWEEN THE RIVER THAMES AND TWICKENHAM STADIUM.
The architects, ABA Group of Sunbury on Thames, were keen to preserve the period features whilst achieving the contemporary design they envisaged. The eight 2-bedroom houses all comprised a large, open plan reception room opening onto a kitchen at ground floor level with two large double bedrooms on the first floor. The proposed designs provided no separation to protect the escape route.
ABA Group Ltd worked with the appointed Building Control officers to meet the fire safety requirements of the Building Regulations but they were very anxious that the solution did not compromise the highspecification open plan design of the apartments. They discovered Automist and called in Bracknell-based Vapourmist, the accredited installers for the system who provided a design and install service.
Automist gave ABA Group a number of active fire protection options to protect the escape routes and aid evacuation for a fraction of the cost of a traditional sprinkler system. Patrick Amos, ABA’s Director was pleased with Vapourmist’s recommendation. “Automist gave us complete design flexibility and was simple to install as it could be connected to the domestic water supply. Because it requires much less water than traditional sprinklers, there are great practical advantages in the event of a fire because run off would be minimised and the highspecification fixtures and fittings would not be in danger of being drenched as would be the case with sprinklers. We will definitely consider the use of Automist in similar designs in the future.”

Promat protection chosen after major fire destroys warehouses
A combination of Promat SUPALUX and Promat VERMICULUX boards have been used to add passive fire protection to new premises on the Lancashire Business Park in Leyland, after the original building on the site was destroyed in a major blaze. The decision was taken to build two large new warehouses whose structural elements would require an extremely high level of passive fire protection. Insurance considerations also required that the new buildings be divided internally into protected zones, by compartment walls which would give up to four hours fire protection. Over 900m2 of Promat VERMICULUX in 50mm and 55mm thicknesses, was used to provide protection for the structural steelwork of the new buildings. Promat VERMICULUX is a lightweight, non-combustible, board which contains vermiculite reinforced with selected fibres and fillers. It is specially designed for steelwork applications and can provide up to 240 minutes fire resistance for structural beams and columns. Great care was taken to ensure that the structural steelwork in the new premises would retain its integrity in fire. The internal partition walls were clad with over 2,860m2 of 12mm Promat SUPALUX boards. This allows the partitions to deliver up to 4 hours fire protection and provide highly effective internal containment in any future fire.

World premiere from Dallmer promises wetroom elegance
AS THE BEST KNOWN NAME IN HIGH SPECIFICATION DRAINAGE SYSTEMS FOR HOTEL, LEISURE AND TOP END RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENTS, DALLMER HAS FOLLOWED ON FROM ITS ACCLAIMED CERALINE AND CERAWALL PRODUCT LAUNCHES WITH THE PREMIERE OF ITS LATEST CREATION: CERAFLOOR.
The exciting new addition to the Dallmer collection offers architects and interior designers a further dimension in terms of elegance as well as function; with CeraFloor having been developed to fit smoothly and stylishly into hardwood as well as solid or reconstructed stone flooring. Key features to the design of CeraFloor include the extremely hardwearing and easy to clean nature of the visible elements as well as an integrated cross-fall to promote smooth flow characteristics which will prevent water collecting.
There is a choice of acid etched or mirror polished stainless steel surfaces to the units, which are adaptable in length from 8001500mm. Installation is straightforward with the very sturdy legs being adjustable to heights between 65 and 90 mm. The feet have integrated anchors for securing to the screed and the legs are also acoustically insulated. The installer is provided with a tough sealing sleeve for bonding with the main waterproofing or membrane system. Two models offer flow rates of 0.4 or 0.8 litres per second, while the outlet can be positioned horizontally or vertically for connection to the drains. Then, in use, the CeraFloor unit’s integral trap prevents odours rising while retaining dirt until it is quickly removed for cleaning.
Dallmer has published a four page, A4 full colour brochure to support the launch of CeraFloor, clearly illustrating the system’s compatibility with different floor constructions as well as the precise nature of its adjustability. CeraFloor will be available here in the UK through its established distributor network.
