The lazy donkey ONCE upon a time there lived a miner. He worked hard for a living to provide food and a roof over the head for his family.

The miner worked in a salt mine. He would walk a long distance to arrive at the open pools where the sun would crystallise the salt deposits.

On his daily trip to and fro, the miner would bring along his donkey, Bhulya, with him. The miner was very kind and tolerant but he did not have a good donkey. Bhulya was lazy and he was always trying to find the easy way out.

One day, while returning from the salt mines with bags of salt loaded onto his back, Bhulya fell into a river. As he struggled to lift himself up, he realised that his load was getting lighter and lighter.

“What’s this?” thought the lazy donkey. “Why my load is magically getting lighter in the water!” It wasn’t long before Bhulya realised that the salt was dissolving in the water.

“Aha, I have a brilliant plan!” he thought to himself.

As they returned from the mines the day, Bhulya pretended to slip into the river again. Once again, the salt was ruined as it dissolved into the water. The lazy donkey began to do this over the next few days.

The salt miner wasn’t at all pleased by what he saw. He was losing money. So he decided to teach Bhulya a lesson.

The next day, the miner replaced the bags of salt at the mining pool with bags of cotton instead. Bhulya was unaware of this. Then, they began their journey home.

As predicted, Bhulya pretended to fall into the river as he crossed it. As he took his time to get up, he realised that something was wrong. The load began to feel heavier and heavier. Soon it became unbearable. He wobbled and was slow to get up. Because of that, his master, took out a whip and beat him.

Poor Bhulya. He felt so miserable after having to walk all the way home with the heavy load. From that day on, Bhulya began to behave himself.

MUHAMMAD Ziyad Zolkefli is the Malaysian gold medallist who set a world record in the shot put event of the Rio Paralympics Games in 2016. Born on 15th March, 1990, in Selangor, he was diagnosed with intellectual impairment.

In 2012, he won a bronze medal in the shot put event at the Paralympic Games in London. He then broke his personal record and won a gold medal in 2013. Following his success, he was recognised as the National Paralympian Sportsman of the Year at the Anugerah Sukan Negara. Besides winning the gold medal in Rio, he set a new personal record again in 2017.

His success is definitely an aspiration to all. He has proven that anyone can conquer his own disability as long as he has a strong will.

A true Malaysian ON May 28, Malaysians learned with heavy hearts that Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dr. Khoo Kay Kim had passed away at the age of 82. Regarded as one of Malaysia’s leading national historians, Prof Khoo dedicated much of his life to the study of history, and the role that it played in education and nationbuilding.

As a result of his outstanding contributions to the university, he was honoured with the title of Emeritus Professor in 2001.

Prof. Khoo’s vast body of works, written in both English and Malay, are important references for the history curriculum in our schools. His wrote on topics such as the histories of the various states and Malay sultanates, nationhood and nationbuilding, historical methodology, historiography, heritage, education, agriculture, immigration, colonial history, and political movements, among others.

For example, he once mentioned our road names, and how many Malaysians are unaware of the stories behind these names. It was therefore important that students spent time cultivating knowledge about Malaysia outside of the classroom, engaging with their surroundings and the history that they tell.

For his contribution to his country, Professor Khoo now has a road named after him.

Think of a national hero. How would you honour his or her contribution to the country? Would a road, a type of fauna, a building or a monument be named after this person?

Discuss in groups of five and prepare to present your ideas to your classmates. You can even choose to draw your item.

Year 4 – conJUncTion - “so” The conjunction “so” connects two ideas. Using “so” in a sentence tells the reader that there has been a response to something that has happened in the main action.

Here is an excerpt taken from The Star. The story tells the reader that a second action has happened because of the main event. The word “so” is used to show this connection.

Higher e-hailing fares expected PETALING JAYA: Higher fares and longer waiting time for e-hailing services are on the cards as the number of drivers dwindle by the July 12 deadline for them to obtain a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence.

Malaysian singer wows China judges with her talent

MALAYSIAN singer and songwriter Wang Zihui stunned judges of Chinese talent show The Coming One with her powerful voice and was awarded five stars.

This was despite complaints by some of the judges that she was mumbling when performing I Don’t Understand, You Don’t Understand, a reggae song she wrote herself.

But Singaporean singer Stephanie Sun, who was one of the judges, defended Wang, saying that “this is part of the Malaysian accent”.

Wang’s talent was praised, with five out of the six judges awarding her with a star. The 21-year-old singer revealed that she gave up her job recently to pursue a career in music. Her father had agreed to support her financially for one year.
