Inculcating the habit of saving money among pupils KUCHING: Four primary schools in the state have been picked for the BSN School Carnival 2016, a programme aimed at inculcating the habit of saving money among pupils.

Introduced two years ago, the BSN School Carnival is a corporate social responsibility initiative by Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) to help selected schools raise funds through charity sales and activities.

A total of 52 schools across the country have been chosen for the programme this year including SK St Anne in Sarikei, SK Green Road, Kuching, SK Agama, Sibu and SJK Chung Hua Batu 7 at Matang here.

“Competition winners will have their prize money banked into their BSN accounts. This carnival also looks to encourage the saving habit among students,” said BSN Sarawak business director Zamri Ngahat during the programme held at SK Green Road.

Zamri said a total of RM10,000 in sponsorship would be given to each participating school.

“Half of the amount will be used by the school to organise this carnival and the other half as prize money for talent and colouring competitions,” he added.

Zamri said students could participate in the banking institution’s various savings programmes such as BSN Smart Junior and Student Savings Encouragement Scheme (SGSP).

Apart from receiving dividends, members will benefit from insurance coverage and other facilities such as invitations to participate in various social and educational programmes.

World of tech wizardry beckons THE Digital Autopsy Machine made its world debut at the Penang Tech Dome located at the iconic Geodesic Dome in Komtar.

The machine is among the 120 exhibits featured in the RM28mil centre, which is dubbed as Penang’s first science discovery centre.

The centre is now open to the public.

The Digital Autopsy Machine provides a 360-degree digital visualisation of the inner workings of the human body from the skin, bones, organs and muscles, using an interactive touch screen.

Penang Tech Centre Berhad chief executive officer Dr Khong Yoon Loong said the centre also had the first free-standing vertical drop slide in the world, an exhibit which brought a lesson in gravity and friction to life.

“We also have Penang’s most powerful telescope for an eye-opening experience of the sky.

“We have received many enquiries, even from Thailand, and several companies have decided to schedule their teambuilding exercises here while some are in the midst of discussions.

“The centre also holds a range of activities, classes and programmes here,” he said.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the science discovery centre was a world-class project.

“We are very excited that Penang is the first in the world to feature the Digital Autopsy Machine, which will be displayed in London and New York only next year,” he said when launching the centre on Saturday at Komtar.

The centre is open daily from 10am to 6pm except on Tuesday.

And Something Weird Happened In Chapter Rwo, when Joel’s teacher asks him to make up something to write about his holidays, Joel begins to imagine many exciting things.

The golden swan ONCE upon a time, there lived a beautiful swan. She was unique because she had striking golden feathers. The swan lived in a pond. Near the pond lived an old woman and her two daughters. They were very poor and lived a hard life.

The swan watched them and felt sorry for the family.

So the swan decided to help them. She flew into their mud home one day and spoke to the mother.

The mother, surprised to see the swan in her home said, “Why have you come here? I have nothing to feed you.”

The swan replied, “I ask for nothing. I wish only to help you and your daughters through your hardships.”

“I will come and visit you from time to time. Each time I come by, I shall give you one of my golden feathers. You will take this feather and sell it. In time, you will live in comfort.”

Upon saying this, the swan shed a feather and gave it to the old lady. And so from time to time, the swan would visit the old lady and give her a feather to sell as she promised. Mother and daughters were happy as each feather they sold bought them enough food, clothes and wood to keep themselves warm in the cold nights.

One day, the old lady thought hard. She told her daughters, “I do not trust this swan. I believe that one day, she may fly away and never come back. Let’s catch her the next time she comes by. We shall pluck all her feathers and sell them. We shall never be poor again!”

But her innocent daughters were appalled at their mother’s suggestion.

“How can we do that?” said one. “She will be in so much pain!”

But the mother was determined to carry out her plan.

The next time the swan came by, the old lady trapped the swan with a heavy net so that she could not fly away. The shocked swan tried her best to flap her wings but to no avail.

“What are you doing?” the golden swan asked the old lady.

“Stay still!” grunted the old woman as she plucked away furiously at the swan’s feathers. After a while, a strange thing happened. The feathers in mother’s hand seemed to change. They lacked lustre and shine.

Shocked, the old woman let go of the swan.

“Poor mother,” said the golden swan. “I wanted to help you but you wanted to kill me instead. You became greedy and wanted more. Now my feathers are nothing more than chicken feathers for you. I am leaving this place and never coming back.” And with that, the golden swan spread her wings and took flight.

The old lady cried out, ”I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Come back!” But only the echo of silence filled the skies.

Graphic designer turns discarded nuts and bolts into works of art THE number of nuts and bolts being discarded as rubbish inspired graphic designer Seow Kar Liang to turn them into art two years ago.

“I use them to create model airplanes, robots and others.

“They are unbreakable and welded at my workshop in Victoria Street,” he said at the Artisan Market and Garage sale at The Star Pitt Street, Penang. Seow said he had used them to make miniature bikes, retro-style robots, helicopters and even army tanks.

He also created string art pieces which were displayed at the artisan market.

They included Superman and Batman emblems as well as a figure of Spider-Man. “I also receive requests to design company logos for branding purposes,” he said.

Seow added he would first hammer several pieces of nails on the wood board to form the outline of his design.

Then he would run colourful strings across the board and loop them around the nails to form a picture.

“Each string art takes between two and four days to complete, depending on its complexity and size,” he said.

The nuts and bolts sculptures were sold for between RM40 and RM150 each while the string art pictures cost between RM50 and RM170 each.

When you next go out to a commercial district, or mall, snap a photograph of a business you find interesting. If you can, print it out on a sheet of paper. Then, bring it to class for a class discussion. (An alternative approach would be for the teacher to bring several pictures of different types of businesses.)

year 4 – spending wisely Do you always get what you want when you go out shopping with your parents? If you do, then you are a lucky person! But where do your parents get money to buy you what you want?

You may see your parents getting money from the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) or using a plastic card (known as a credit card or debit card) that works like money. But the money has to come from somewhere!

Most of the time, your parents work to earn wages.

Buying toys and sweets and going for movies all cost money. You need money to buy things. Money includes notes and coins that have different values. You earn money by going to work.

We are going to do a little activity to learn the value and hard work of earning money. In pairs, look through The Star for something you would really like to have. Cut it out and paste it in the space provided.

Note its cost.

Lucky for you, your parents have allowed you to buy this item. But you will have to earn it by doing chores and earning an allowance. Decide what types of chores you would do, and how often you would have to do them in order to save enough money to buy the item you want. Then tell your classmates about your plan to ‘earn’ enough to buy this item. And don’t forget, you still have school and homework and other activities in your day-to-day routine!
