Climb every mountain FAIRY tales tell us that dreams come true, with a visit from a fairy, a touch of a wand, a sprinkle of fairy dust, a kiss from a crown prince, or the magic word “Abracadabra!”

We know better than to

trust fairy tales, don’t we? In the real world, “magic” happens when we set our minds on big goals and work hard to get there! It’s never easy; we must be disciplined, focused and persistent.

“You need to be confident. You have to be strong in both heart and soul. One mistake and you could slip to your death,” he said, adding that the most difficult part of the task was the descent.

Raman, who is in the automotive business, also paid a price: the extreme cold caused frostbite on one finger and toe. He is being treated for the injuries.

Training for the expedition began last year, with him climbing Mount Lobuche (6,145m) in Nepal. Other challenges in this year’s climbing season include waiting for the fixing of ropes to the mountain. As a result, he was stuck at the base camp for almost two weeks.

PETALING JAYA: For more than 10 years, Raman Nair Hachoodan dreamt of scaling the peak of Mount Everest, located 8,848m above sea level.

The 42-year-old from Shah Alam managed to make his dream come true on May 20, when he set foot on the summit of the world’s highest mountain under extremely difficult circumstances.

“It was a great feeling to touch the roof of the earth. My hard work and training paid off. It is the most difficult thing I have done in my life,” said an ecstatic Raman.

Preparing for jobs of the future KUALA LUMPUR: One of the key concerns highlighted in the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogue is how to ensure the younger generation is equipped for jobs of the future.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said almost 65% of existing jobs are likely to become redundant or disappear within 30 years or so.

These include many construction, manufacturing and administration jobs where robots are replacing manual labour.

“Having the right skills for the younger generation is a big concern. The generation should not only aspire to be doctors or lawyers, but start looking at jobs in robotics and data science,” Khairy said.

What’s in your bin?

DO you think about what’s in your bin, or where your rubbish goes to? According to gecnet.info, over 23,000 tonnes of waste are produced each day in Malaysia.

With the amount expected to rise to 30,000 tonnes by 2020, we can’t afford to be careless about waste management any longer. We need to contribute towards a cleaner, greener and more beautiful Malaysia.

From Sept 1, 2015, the Government has made it mandatory to separate solid waste at source. How have you made changes to waste disposal at home? The Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government has launched the #asingkan campaign, with guidelines on how to separate household waste.

Some people find recycling very troublesome. They come up with various excuses not to do it. In pairs, write out a response to each of the following excuses. Then, role-play the situations in class.

3. I’m not sure which items can be recycled.

Read the following extract taken from an article published in The Star. In groups of four, think of five ways to avoid food waste. Consider your shopping and eating habits, and food storage methods. Then, create a simple poster outlining the five steps Malaysians can take to reduce food waste.

We have read this before: we generate 15,000 tonnes of food waste a day, enough to fill 7.5 football fields or to feed 7.5 million people. We are talking about feeding the entire state of Israel or the entire migrant population of Britain!

Meanwhile, each day, one in five humans go hungry. That is 800 million people, or more than 26 times the population of Malaysia. There are millions of undernourished children in poor countries.

Advanced countries like the United States, Britain and Canada are wasting food at the rate of 100kg per person per year. According to a report in 2010, RM115bil worth of Canadian food ends up in landfills.

Good food management must begin at home.

Simple steps to minimise waste will go a long way, and save lives.

SOME 70 participants took part in a car boot barter trade event held for the first time in Ipoh by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kinta.

The event saw 40 participating vehicles converging at the parking area in front of Glamour Square in Bercham on Sunday.

Car boots were filled with miscellaneous used items such as books, clothing, toys, old typewriters and an old stamp album.

Organising chairman Vin Choo Chin Yip said JCI was encouraging people to recycle, reuse, and reduce waste.

“Instead of throwing away old things, people can exchange the items with the rest at the event.”

Ipoh city councillor Aldrich Low added, “The new trend of barter trade must become a habit among families, friends and neighbours.”
