Beyond the body

WHEN we think of being healthy, physical health comes to mind immediately.

That includes eating a balanced diet and staying active through movement and sports. However, it is important to remember that health also includes our mental, emotional, as well as social health.

What are some good habits of a healthy person? Think about what a healthy person may do every day. Work with a partner and share your ideas. You may also look for information in The Star. Then, write down a good habit next to each of the puzzle pieces forming the human figure on the right.

EXAMPLE

When you are done, present your “healthy person” puzzle to your teacher and classmates. As a class, cut out the best “healthy habit” puzzle pieces to form a brand new “healthy person” to be displayed on the classroom noticeboard.

Elementary Staying healthy

TAKING part in sports is a great way to ensure that we stay healthy. Malaysia is so privileged to be hosting the 29th SEA Games this year. The countries of South-East Asia are involved in this sporting event, which is held every other year.

Meet Rimau! It is Malaysia’s mascot for the Games. Rimau is inspired by the graceful and powerful Malayan Tiger. In fact, Rimau is quite special because not only is it an abbreviated form of “Harimau”, but it also stands for: These are all the values that we cherish in sports, making it an apt symbol of hope, courage and humanity.

An acrostic poem is a type of poetry where the first letter in each line spells out a particular word or phrase. There are no rhyming rules and you are free to invent according to your creativity!

In groups of four, think of a sport that you would like to write about and spell it out vertically. Then, brainstorm words that begin with the letters. In each line, write a short phrase to describe the sport. Finally, look for a picture of the sport in The Star. Cut it out and paste it next to your poem.

There were no mascots for the SEA Games until 1985. Ever since then, the participating countries have chosen animated and colourful national characters as their mascots. These cute faces represent meaningful symbols.

The cost of competition

“THERE is no friendship between two teammates,” Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton once commented, when asked about his partnership with now-retired Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg. They were childhood friends who met at go-karting.

If no friendship could be fostered between teammates, then what about competitors from opposing teams?

Part A It’s easy for us to judge what others say and jump to conclusions. But when we put ourselves into their shoes, we begin to imagine the situation they are in and try to understand the feelings they may experience, leading them to behave in a certain way.

With a partner, imagine you were Lewis Hamilton, the youngest Formula One champion in history. Discuss the reasons why you would make the comment that there is no friendship between two teammates. Then, fill up the thought bubbles below.

There are always two sides to a coin so it is only fair to consider another party’s viewpoint before we form our judgements. In an interview, Nico Rosberg was asked if he disliked Lewis Hamilton. His response was: “I have huge respect for him but, well, we’re not best friends at the moment.”

Looking at both their quotes, we can conclude that their feelings for each other are mutual. Now, with a partner, put yourself in Rosberg’s shoes and discuss his sentiments about Hamilton. Then, fill up the thought bubbles below.

Part C

If you were asked to tweet about Hamilton and Rosberg’s relationship in 140 characters or less, how would you describe it? Share your tweet by reading it aloud in class.

AT every sporting event, the gold medal or trophy is the most coveted prize. Although gold is an incredibly precious metal and a symbol of success and victory, there are other things in life that are of more value than gold.

Part A

Before Usain Bolt became a household name, Carl Lewis dominated the track and field events. Way before either of them came to fame, there was African American athlete Jesse Owens.

Owens was a superior athlete but his name almost didn’t make history. During the qualifying rounds at the long jump event in the 1936 Olympics, he failed on his first two attempts. If he were to fail the next one, he would be disqualified. A competitor and German athlete Luz Long observed him at the event and gave him a tip.

He suggested to Owens that if he were to take off well short of the board, he might not commit a foul again. Owens took his advice and went on to win gold and set the world record for long jump. Long came in second but was the first person to run up to congratulate Owens upon his victory.

Everyone at the sporting event represented their own country and had their eyes set on gold. Why would a competitor from another nation help his rival win?

“You can melt down all the medals and cups I have,” Owens said. “And they wouldn’t be a plating on the 24-carat friendship I felt for Luz Long at that moment.”

To Owens, Long became more than just a good friend. He was an incredible friend.

In groups of four, think of how you would transform the passage into a skit. Decide the following among yourselves: The actors who will play the roles of Owens and Long; ● The scenes to be included and their sequence; ● The lines to be uttered by the actors; Practise acting out the skit in your group before delivering your performance in class. Finally, as a class, vote for the most engaging performance. ●

Part B With a partner, look in The Star for two sports competitors who have struck up a friendship with each other. Cut out their pictures and paste them on a sheet of A4 paper.

Then, in not more than 300 words, write out their friendship story and read it out in class. You may use the passage in Part A as an example.

IF we look at how sporting events began, we may be able to understand the core values that lay the foundation of sportsmanship. Many of us associate sports with beating our opponents and winning gold medals. While these are important, they offer only superficial value compared to what is far more valuable underneath.

Read the passage below.

Nicol suffers first loss to an Asian in 15 years at World Games PETALING JAYA: Nicol David’s dominance as Asia’s top squash player is under threat.

The highest-ranked Asian at world No. 6, Nicol suffered a blow in her bid to win a fourth successive World Games gold when she lost to Joey Chan of Hong Kong in the semi-finals in Wroclaw, Poland, on Thursday.

It was the eight-time world champion Nicol’s first loss to an Asian in 15 years. She was beaten by Rebecca Chiu, also of Hong Kong, in the 2002 Asian Games final in Busan, South Korea.

The left-handed Joey was in shock after pulling off the surprise win over the 33-year-old Nicol, who was the world No. 1 from 2006 to 2015.

“I can’t believe it. Nicol has always been my idol and she’s a role model in world squash. To beat her is simply amazing,” said Joey.

Good sportsmanship

THERE are many great lessons that sports can teach us. For instance, we learn to hold our heads high after a loss, and try again the next time. Sports have an astounding ability to shape our character. When exemplary character is displayed at the arena, we call it good sportsmanship.

Singaporean marathoner Ashley Liew showed exemplary character at the 28th SEA Games in 2015. In a turn of events, the lead marathoners were diverted to a wrong path and soon, Liew found himself in the lead. Instead of taking advantage of their error and dashing to the finish line, he chose to slow down and waited for them to catch up. He didn’t win the marathon as he took the eighth place. This didn’t bother him because to him, “achievements are secondary to character”.

It was a small gesture but the inspirational story of sportsmanship has earned him a special recognition at the Singapore Sports Awards.

Hockey girls finish last KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia have ended up as wooden spoonists in the Women’s World Hockey League Semi-Finals after losing 1-0 to Scotland in the ninth-placing playoff at the Fullon Stadium in Brussels, Belgium.

The national team were hoping to claim at least one win in the tournament but a seventhminute penalty corner goal by Sarah Robertson put paid to their hopes.

This is world No. 22 Malaysia’s first appearance in the World Hockey League Semi-Finals.
