Together, we can make it right WHAT would happen to our country if everyone only cared about themselves?

Sometimes in society, we see people being selfish and inconsiderate of others.

For example, there are some drivers who double-park, causing inconvenience to others. There are also some who throw rubbish out of their car windows,

without caring for the environment. Such attitudes and behaviours can bring social disharmony and cause damage to our country. It can also affect our image and reputation. We don’t want foreign tourists to visit our country and leave with a bad impression, do we?

Read the following passage, which is adapted from an article published in The Star on July 3, 2017.

Fishmonger: Nobody got sick or died, so it’s all right PETALING JAYA: Dishonest fishmongers and fishing boat operators are taking advantage of the rising fish prices to push pufferfish fillets into the market.

Currently, the fish are taken back to shore by hundreds of kilogrammes to be sold as “crystal fish”, after they are filleted.

In Penang, Kedah and Perak, pufferfish fillets are used by seafood porridge and bee hoon soup hawkers as “fried fish meat”.

The fillets are also widely used as a component of appetisers in Chinese wedding feasts at hotels and restaurants, particularly in Penang.

A source said pufferfish fillets could be half the price of other fish fillets.

“Hawkers and restaurant owners used to use Spanish mackerel (tenggiri) and grouper fillets, but their prices have risen tremendously over the last two years,” said the source.

“By turning to pufferfish fillets, hawkers and restaurant owners are able to reduce their costs by half,” said the source.

The danger is that buyers, such as housewives and others who would not suspect any seafood would be toxic, are completely unaware.

“They are told that it is a kind of edible fish, with some calling it ‘crystal fish’,” the source added.

A Penang fishmonger said the fillets were a hot item as they were delicious when fried.

“We dare not tell them they are from pufferfish. People are sceptical of eating pufferfish as they are known to be poisonous,” said the seller who believed that pufferfish were edible if the toxin was removed.

“I have been selling this for the past few months, and nobody has gotten sick or died,” he said.

“Therefore, I think it’s safe to eat.”

Celebrate our cultural heritage

EVERY country is uniquely different from another. The differences could be seen in terms of their buildings (or architecture), food, customs, languages or even people, among others. For example, in England, you will find Buckingham Palace where the Queen lives.

In China, on the other hand, you will see the Forbidden City. It used to be the imperial palace (or the home of Chinese emperors) but is now a museum. Both have different architecture and historical backgrounds. The differences do not stop there. Can you state a few other differences between England and China?

Malaysia is also unique in its own way. Here, you will find a wide range of food, fashion styles, festivals, etc. All these are possible because our country is made up of various ethnic groups. Each ethnic group – Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan-Dusun and others – has its own cultures and customs.

Unity in diversity a priceless gift

KUCHING: The Gawai celebration in Sarawak is a timely reminder that Malaysia is a nation of many races and cultures who should come together for the common goal of unity in diversity, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said.

The 1Malaysia Foundation trustee said Sarawak is a model of what the people could do to bring about greater unity and promote moderation.

“When it comes to promoting integration among the people, Sarawak is a good example.

There are over 40 ethnic groups in the state and yet everyone can interact with one another.

Hence, we came up with the idea to make Kuching a City of Unity (in 2015),” said Lee. Lee called on Malaysians to accept one another as fellow countrymen regardless of race or religion and be proud of identifying themselves as Malaysians first.

“I always believe that being a Malaysian does not make anyone less a Malay, Chinese, Indian, Kadazan, Iban or other ethnicity.

“Malaysians of different ethnic origins must always be conscious of the need to have mutual respect for one another,” he said.

Lee also said the most urgent task of all Malaysians is to ensure racial and religious harmony and reject all forms of extremism which could undermine peace and harmony in the country.

“Multiracial living and community are part of our heritage. Unity in diversity is a priceless gift that must be cherished by all Malaysians,” he added.

Now, appoint members to play the characters and discuss how you want to act out the scenario. Practise among yourselves before acting it out in class. At the end of the activity, as a class, reflect on the lessons that can be gained from the scenarios presented.

WHEN two people do not understand each other, conflicts and misunderstandings are bound to happen. It is even more so when they come from different backgrounds. However, if both parties open their hearts to each other, and practise common values such as respect and courtesy, they can achieve more than just enmity.

As Malaysians, we may be different in some aspects but we must always remember that despite our differences, we share many commonalities. For one, we are all citizens of Malaysia.

That means we should all accept each other as members of one big family, and work towards making our country a great place to live in. For this to happen, everyone must do their part.

For 16 years, Mohd Yusuf Rohani has been helping to care for his friend R. Doraisamy, who is blind and has lost the lower part of both legs due to diabetes.

It’s been a financial struggle for Mohd Yusuf on his salary as a boilerman at a palm oil factory near Teluk Intan, and for Doraisamy’s sister and husband, who earn a combined daily salary of about RM70 at a nearby estate.

But when he became one of the winners of the Star Golden Hearts Award in November last year, things changed. He took the certificate, trophy and cheque for RM3,000 to show the friend he calls “D.O.”.

“He was very happy,” he recalls. “He told me to take half of the money and he took half.”

In a diverse country like Malaysia, we sometimes hear inspiring stories of people going out of their way to help others. Mohd Yusuf Rohani is one of these outstanding figures. house, which had fallen behind because he had been giving money to Doraisamy. He also continued to take him for his hospital visits and bring him food.

When friends and members of the public heard about the story of Mohd Yusuf and Doraisamy, they donated another RM4,000. A country club in Petaling Jaya also contributed RM5,000. Mohd Yusuf opened a joint account for Doraisamy and his niece.

They used the money to pay off Doraisamy’s debts and for the funeral expenses for his niece’s late husband.

There’s still RM4,000 left, which they are saving for Doraisamy’s future needs.

“No matter what our religion, we look after each other,” says Mohd Yusuf.

Where the sun shines for inventor Architect is proud to put nation in limelight

PETALING JAYA: Architect and inventor Teoh Siang Teik’s heart lies in Malaysia, despite his extensive travels all over the world.

“I have been everywhere but in the end, I always come back to Malaysia because this is where home is,” he said.

For Teoh, Negaraku is about the people of Malaysia, their cultures and the great variety of excellent local cuisines, as well as a nation where everyone accepts each other despite their diverse roots.

He gained fame for inventing the world’s most powerful and efficient solar-powered water heater – now used all over the world.

It all started with his desire to go trekking in Nepal, which led the then young Teoh to Kathmandu in 1982.

He was part of a United Nation’s development

qualities in the face of adversity. He could also be a person who is exemplary in his behaviour such as being civic-conscious and well-mannered to everyone. As students, what are some of the ways in which you and your friends can play the part of honourable citizens?

programme to build solar-powered water heaters for 69 rural homes there.

Teoh initially faced scepticism when he decided to build his own solar-powered water heater which would also operate efficiently in cloudy and cold conditions.

“Everybody said it could not be done but 10 years later, my invention is being used around the world,” he said.

He is proud to have brought recognition to Malaysia through his invention and has been hailed as a world hero by Time magazine.

“When people ask where does the best solar-powered water heater come from, they are surprised that it does not come from Japan, Germany or the United States, but from Malaysia,” he said.

His solar-powered water heater was granted international patents by the World Intellectual Property Organisation in 1997.

Imagine you were Teoh. You have been asked to deliver a motivational speech to students in your school. How would you share your experience and what would you say to reinforce the importance of being an honourable citizen? Based on the passage given, write your motivational speech in NOT less than 150 words. Then, form groups of four and exchange your work among yourselves. Decide on the most well-written speech (you may still make changes to it after getting everyone’s feedback). Next, appoint a group member to deliver it in class (try not to refer to the script). As a class, vote for the most inspiring speech.

Did you read about the 23rd Summer Deaflympics in Turkey from July 18 to 30? The international sporting event is held every four years for athletes with hearing loss. This year, it saw the participation of 4,500 athletes from 109 countries.

Representing Malaysia were 15 Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf) athletes – four from the badminton team, eight from the athletics team and three from the bowling team.

For this activity, provide the cover photo (it can be a photo collage), the profile picture and the fan page name. Do it on a sheet of A3 paper, according to the template shown.

After you are done, display your work on the classroom walls and do a gallery walk. Draw a “thumbs up” sign on the design you find the most stunning or impactful. Finally, post the one with the most “likes” on the classroom noticeboard.

A question of honour DISGRACE, shame and dishonour – these words are often used to indicate that something serious has happened. Often, the deed or action is so bad that it has the potential to bring down the reputation of the doer, his family and depending on the circumstances, his community and country. Therefore, always think before you act; take control of negative emotions like anger, envy and greed so that they won’t lead you down the wrong path. When your reputation is ruined, it will take a long time for others to trust you again. If it is a serious offence, you may not even have the chance to bounce back from it.

A New Zealand newspaper made the headlines recently, following its effort to tackle the “epidemic” of drunk driving in Queenstown. It filled its front page with the names, ages and alcohol readings of those convicted of the offence. Almost 100 names were put up. There have been strong reactions both for and against the campaign, which the paper plans to continue for the rest of the year.
