Steps:

To create the diorama, you will need:

An ocean diorama made out of scrap materials and an old cereal box at a children’s science workshop.

1. Gather all your supplies as listed.

2. On a piece of paper, make a rough sketch of how you want your diaroma to look like.

3. Cut out one side of the shoebox, which is to be used as the viewing side.

4. Stick the blue A3 papers to the walls of your shoebox to reflect the ocean.

5. Paste the pictures of underwater life on cardboard to create a threedimensional effect. Hang them from the top of the box using thread.

For corals and sea plants, place them on the floor of the ocean. Use modelling clay to ensure they stay in place.

6. Paste the labels on (or near) your pictures.

7. Voila! Your diaroma is ready.

After you are done, display the diorama in class and do a gallery walk. Then, take turns to present it to your classmates. Include the fun facts you have found earlier to make your presentation more interesting. Finally, ask the class to vote for the most well-designed diorama.

It gets murkier THE oceans are a rich source of marine life. We are dependent on them and therefore, it is important for us to keep them clean. Sadly however, many of them have been polluted to the extent of harming marine life. According to softschools.com, each day, thousands of tonnes of trash and wastes are dumped into the oceans; each year, discarded fishing nets kill up to 300,000 dolphins and porpoises, while one million sea birds die due to pollution.

Vietnam fishermen still in deep waters

HANOI: Vietnam is maintaining the ban on deep-water fishing in four central provinces.

The ban was introduced after a Taiwanese-owned steel factory discharged toxins into the sea last year. It caused the country’s worst environmental disaster.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said that fishermen should not fish for seafood in deep water until the Ministry of Health finds it safe to eat and resources are restored.

The US$10.6bil (RM45.9bil) steel complex, owned by Formosa Plastics Group, discharged toxins such as cyanide and phenol that exceeded allowable limits during a test run in April last year.

It caused massive deaths of fish and other sea life along more than 200km of coastline. The incident devastated fishing communities and tourism in the four provinces.

The factory owner was ordered to pay US$500mil (RM2.16bil) in compensation.

In September, the Ministry of Health said tests on samples of sea life in shallow water such as tunas and mackerels in the four provinces showed that they were safe to eat, while 132 out of 1,040 samples tested on sea life in deep water such as shrimps, crabs and squids were found to contain phenol.

B. One with nature beyond the horizon Horizon Hills is a township development in Johor with the concept of “One with Nature”. It came out tops in The Iskandar Malaysia Accolade (TIMA) for the Most Liveable Residence.

The project boasts a low carbon lifestyle. Its density is five units per acre compared with the usual 10 to 13 units per acre in other property developments.

“We incorporate innovative design in the units with large windows to welcome natural light and ventilation into the house, reducing the need for electricity for lighting,” said Horizon Hills general manager Jim Woon.

“Our usage of cooling clay roof tiles and 11-foot high ceiling design also promotes better heat dispersal and absorbs less heat and radiation.”

The development offers residents fresh and cool air, in addition to green amenities such as 150 acres of thematic gardens, parks and a 30km cycling path network.

“We encourage a healthy lifestyle where kids can be outside whenever they please, have freedom to move around and at the same time, parents would have peace of mind,” said Woon.

The township’s location is within a 5km vicinity of world-class facilities such as international education institutions. There are also shopping, and food and beverage outlets, as well as international theme parks such as Legoland Malaysia and healthcare facilities.

Horizon Hills has a fully-equipped clubhouse, an international standard 18-hole golf course, and Chinese primary and the upcoming international schools.

Other notable awards won by the development are the Property Developer Category for Excellent Landscape Planning & Development from Institute Landscape Architects Malaysia, as well as the Property Insight Prestigious Developer Awards 2015 for the Best Township Development Category.

It was also named one of the top 10 golf courses in Malaysia by Golf Digest.

SMK Raja Perempuan (RPS) Ipoh has been chosen as Perak’s sole representative to take part in the Toyota Eco Youth Challenge 2017. Schools need to take up several challenges in order to win the competition.

The challenge is aimed at promoting the importance of preserving the environment among the younger generation, especially students. This is so that they will always act responsibly towards the environment in order to ensure their future.

Participants in the challenge need to solve the environment issues found in areas and local communities near their schools. The RPS team took part in its first project by cleaning up areas known to be notorious illegal dumpsites.

The project required participants to collaborate with local authorities, NGOs and other stakeholders. Participating schools are also required to generate publicity about their green efforts, create awareness and reach for the participation of their own communities.

SAM: ‘Dubai of Malaysia’ will damage environment badly ALOR SETAR: The decision by the Department of Environment (DoE) to issue a stop-work order to the developer of a RM1.2bil coastal reclamation project dubbed “The Dubai of Malaysia” in Kuala Kedah is a good move, says environmentalist group Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM).

SAM now wants the department to reject the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report and scrap the project.

The ambitious Aman Laut project comprises high-end bungalows, chic condominiums, malls and luxury eateries, which will radically change the skyline beside the seafront.

SM Mohamed said that the project would lead to a total loss of mudflats and mangroves in the project site.

“In addition to threatening the fishery resources in the waters off Kuala Kedah and adversely affecting the livelihoods of fishermen, the mangroves here – the breeding grounds of marine life – will be permanently destroyed.

The mudflats also serve as a source of nutrients for fish for a much larger area.”

He said the impact on the environment, specifically the coastal and marine environment, marine resources and coastal birds, would be significant.

“The coastal communities here, in particular the fishermen, have raised their objections. We call upon the DoE to reject the EIA of the proposed reclamation project,” he said.

Bleak future for engineering student caught with ganja IPOH: In two months, a university student here would have completed his petroleum engineering degree and been on his way to joining the working world.

Instead, the 21-year-old student now faces the bleak possibility of being hanged after he was arrested with 248.7g of ganja at the campus hostel.

According to the police, those found with 200g or more of ganja will be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty.

Police believe that the student has been distributing and selling the drug at the university for the last two years.

“He tried to run away and get rid of the drug when he saw us, but we caught him. Initial investigations showed that he was trying to earn a side income from selling ganja,” said

Perak Tengah OCPD Supt Mohamad Zainal Abdullah.

“But he was also getting a weekly allowance from his family. It was unfortunate for someone smart enough to take an engineering course to get involved in drugs,” he said, adding that the police had received a tip-off about a week ago.

According to Supt Mohamad Zainal, police also arrested the undergraduate’s accomplice at the university on the same day.

“The accomplice, in his 20s, graduated recently and was at the university to get his transcript. Both tested positive for drugs. Both men, from Kuala Lumpur, will be remanded for investigation,” he added.

Police are now trying to trace the undergraduate’s supplier.

“The ganja could be distributed to more than 100 users. We are serious when it comes to drugs, especially when it involves students, because they shouldn’t get involved in it.”

For 25-year-old Mark, the memories of consuming alcohol with his friends while still in school remain vivid.

Mark, (not his real name), said he knew it was wrong to drink in school but peer pressure led to his liquor-fuelled misadventures.

“At the time, skipping classes, going to a convenience store and getting a bottle of whisky was my idea of fun.”

He started drinking at the age of 13 and it went on for 12 years. Every day in school, he would share a bottle with five of his friends.

Teachers caught him, but he found new ways to hide his addiction from them. Even his parents did not have a clue that he used to go back home drunk.

Mark has now stopped drinking after a friend died in a road accident after a drinking session.

“I was with him at the time. We left and I had to call my brother to fetch me because I was totally drunk.

“The next day, I got a phone call from my friend saying that he met with an accident. A week later, he died. I was shocked and I told myself the drinking had to stop.

“To all the schoolchildren out there, have fun in school but don’t spoil it by consuming alcohol. If I had not been drinking, who knows, I might have scored well in my PMR and SPM and gone on to better things.

“My pursuit for ‘happiness’ hampered my goals. I am 25 now and thank God, it is not too late to bounce back. I just hope other students will not follow my ways.”
