Elementary Financially savvy Note to the teacher

OUR children are riding the great wave of technology today. They now have facts and procedures at their fingertips.

Teachers have to equip their students with new skills that allow them to thrive in today’s global economy.

The activities in The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education pullout combine literacy skills with content to build this set of skills.

The key below indicates the skills integrated into the activities in this pullout.

One for you and me CAN you imagine a world without money? How would we go about buying things? Well, thousands of years ago, this was what happened; there was no monetary system like today and people used the barter system to get what they wanted.

The barter system was all about trading one thing for another as long as both sides were agreeable to the exchange. For example, let’s say that your friend has a watch that you have been eyeing for some time; your friend, on the other hand, likes the skateboard you got for your birthday. So what both of you can do is a mutual swap and voila, you get what you want without using any money. Isn’t that simply amazing?

Motion graphics designer Shan Vellu has a unique way of keeping track of his spending.

At the end of each day, he jots down every ringgit he spends. At the end of each year (since 2011), he then maps out all the money he has spent on an infographic.

It allows him to not only understand how he spends his money, but also to have a rough idea of how his spending has changed over the years.

Not just that, it helps him to be more aware of his needs and wants, and to be able to differentiate between a necessity and luxury spending.

Shan said you obviously don’t need to be a graphic designer. If you’re really up for it, all you need are a pen and a paper to draw it out – and a lot of discipline.

“I once read that if you want to buy something, you should make sure that you have at least five times of that amount in your savings. It’s a good idea when it comes to large purchases,” said Shan.

THE word “civic” comes from the Latin word “civis”, which means a citizen in ancient Rome. It is also the root word for “city”, thus indicating that ‘civic’ could mean anything relating to a city. It was popularly used in the phrase “civic garland” or “civic crown”, which was translated from the Latin “corona civica”. Interestingly, this refers to a garland of oak leaves and acorns given in ancient Rome to a person who saved another person’s life. From this, we can see the degree of importance that people in ancient times placed on civic responsibility.

THE notion of civic responsibility originated from Roman statesman Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. His selfless devotion to the state made him a hero among the Romans. Another altruistic person who is iconic for acts of civic responsibility is Martin Luther King Jr. His fight for equality through lectures, dialogues, movements and marches changed not only America’s perspective on equality but also that of the entire world. These phrases are so common that most of us have used them ourselves, especially when examinations are just around the corner or when projects are due. In today’s fastfaced life, 24 hours in a day just does not seem enough to do all the things that we would like to do. Experts say that the best way to get the most out of a day lies in this fairly simple answer – planning. Planning plays a very important part in managing time effectively. KUALA LUMPUR: Azizulhasni Awang is not one to rest on his laurels.

Despite having reached the pinnacle as an athlete, the newly-crowned world champion cyclist is not taking a well-deserved break.

The 29-year-old returned to his training base in Melbourne last night where he plans to juggle his schedule between studies and training.

Azizul, who bagged the keirin gold medal at the Track Cycling World Championships in Hong Kong last week, still has a year before he graduates from his Sports Science studies at the University of Victoria in Melbourne.

“I have achieved my dream to become a world champion but reaching the top does not mean I will take it easy. In fact, I have to work harder now as everyone will be out to beat me.

“Coach (John Beasley) is okay with me taking a few weeks break as I have not spent a lot of time with my family prior to the world meet but I want to continue training.

“I have already spent a few days here to fulfil my commitments and it’s enough. I want to be prepared when I defend my title at the World Championships (in Holland) next year.

“It will be a proud moment for me. But I also want to try and finish my studies before putting all my focus on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” said Azizul.

Next year, Azizul will have his hands full with five World Cup meets, World Championships, the Asian Cycling Championships (National Velodrome in Nilai), the Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast, Australia) and the Asian Games (Jakarta).

“I will go for three World Cup meets, which I think should be enough to earn points to qualify for the World Championships. It will depend on the coach and the events he wants me to focus on.”
