Teachers have to equip their students with new skills that allow them to thrive in today’s global economy.

Flying high IN the village where he lived, Anil was known as the King of Kites because he was very good at making and mending kites. He often made splendid kites for his friends. His mother, who was very good at sewing, was known as the Queen of Needles. She made beautiful clothes for the villagers. One day, Anil heard about a wedding in the village. He planned to make twelve beautiful kites with sequins and bright tails for his friends to fly in honour of the bride. However, his mother needed his help as she had to make all the clothes for the wedding. She also needed Anil’s sequins, ribbons and string because she did not have enough. Anil helped his mother but he felt very sad because he couldn’t make the kites for his friends. When his friends saw how disappointed he was, they found a way to help him.

Then, choose a royal title from the list below. Create a title for each of you (similar to the King of Kites) based on what you know a lot about. Next, find pictures from The Star to represent each of you. Cut them out and paste them on a sheet of A4 paper. Write down your titles, with a speech bubble each to introduce yourself. When you are done, take turns to act out your roles in class.

On his subsequent voyage, Gulliver was stranded on an island where the inhabitants were giants compared to him. In the Land of Giants, he became part of a travelling show and was later bought by the Queen of Giants. He had a few dangerous encounters with giant animals but was well looked after by Glumdalclitch, the daughter of the first giant farmer who found him. Eventually, he managed to leave the island.

If you had to make a choice of either being smaller or bigger than everyone else you knew, which would you choose to be and why?

In groups of four, discuss and make your own choices. Then, write down your individual reasons under the heading “Bigger than” or “Smaller than”. Do this activity on a sheet of A4 paper.

Next, as a group, look in The Star for a person (in the form of a picture or name) who, you think, should be bigger or smaller than everyone else.

A voyage of discovery

EVER since he was a young boy, Lemuel Gulliver always believed that he would sail across the seas. His dream came true when he joined Captain Prichard and his crew on a voyage. However, his ship crashed into rocks and he was washed up on the shores of an island called Lilliput.

Its inhabitants were only about six inches tall. At first, Gulliver was made a prisoner but after he helped the kingdom fight against its Blefuscudian enemies, he was freed. Later, however, it was the Blefuscudians who helped him to build a boat and set sail again. Read the graphic novel Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift to find out what happened in the end.

A single-minded pursuit

INTERMEDIATE Novel

CAPTAIN Ahab, a whaler, lost his leg many years ago during an encounter with the great white whale, Moby Dick.

Consequently, he embarked on a relentless path of revenge to find and kill it. Driven by his obsession and mad rage, Captain Ahab disregarded everything else, including the danger to the lives of his whaling crew aboard his ship, the Pequod. The story is narrated by Ishmael. He was a young sailor who was sailing with Captain Ahab on his first whaling job. Read the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville to find out whether Captain Ahab managed to hunt down and kill the whale.

The point of view in a novel is the angle or perspective from which the story is told. It can influence the tone of the entire story. In Moby Dick, the story is told from Ishmael’s first-person point of view. Here is an extract from the first chapter of the novel.

My name is Ishmael and this is my story.

I’m a sailor and I work on different ships.

I love my life on the ocean. It’s sometimes dangerous but never, never boring. I feel sad when I’m not on a ship.

One November day I thought, “I want to work on a whaling ship.” Why did I want to be a whaler? I can’t tell you. The life of a whaler is very dangerous.

In groups of four, scan The Star for an article or news report of an incident, situation or event involving people. Cut it out and paste it on a sheet of A4 paper. Imagine that you were involved in the situation. In about 50 to 100 words, write a short description of it, from the first-person point of view.

When you are done, read it out in class.

ALOR SETAR: A 12-year-old girl was hit 13 times by stray shotgun pellets at her home in Kampung Lubuk Keriang, Pokok Sena, near here.

She was having dinner with her family in the kitchen when a shot fired by a bird hunter hit the house and her.

Nur Syahida Bakar was struck in the head, chest, legs, right shoulder and arm at about 6.30pm while the fridge near her was peppered by more than 50 pellets.

She was writhing in pain on the floor after being hit, her family told police.

A metaphor is a literary term for comparing two things directly using their similarities. One thing is implied to be another due to similar traits or characteristics.

A simile is also a figure of speech used to make comparisons and show similarities between two different things.

Now we were in the boats. Moby Dick came up out of the water again. He was a huge, white mountain! (metaphor) Captain Ahab was there. His face was as happy as a child’s face on Christmas morning. When he heard this, Captain Ahab turned on his whalebone leg. He was very angry now and he shouted in Starbuck’s face.

“This whale is evil! Do you understand? White is the colour of ice and ice takes strong ships down under the water. White is the colour of a man’s eyes when he can’t see. White is the colour of dead men. White is evil and the whale is evil. He’s laughing at me. I’ll only be free when this evil is dead. Dead!”

In the extract, Captain Ahab is comparing white with evil because of his hatred for Moby Dick.

In groups of four, think of positive comparisons for the colour white. Complete the sentences below on a sheet of A4 paper. You must use at least five words from The Star. When you are done, illustrate your work with pictures from The Star and display it on your classroom notice board.

The legend lives on

IN the year 650, England was without a king, thus, trouble and fighting increased. Merlin the magician had an unusual dream in which he saw a “wonderful” king for England whose name was Arthur. He found Arthur when the boy succeeded in pulling a sword out from a magic stone in a trial. With Merlin’s advice and guidance, Arthur grew up to be a strong, good and wise king. Under his rule, England flourished and defeated her enemies. Trouble began when Arthur disregarded Merlin’s advice and married a beautiful woman named Guinevere. Merlin predicted “a dark future” for them. Shortly after, Merlin felt he was

losing his magic and knew that it was time for him to leave. Arthur then looked for the strongest and best knights in England for the Round Table. Lancelot, the first knight to be appointed, fell in love with Guinevere.

When Arthur discovered this, he banished Lancelot from his castle. Subsequently, Arthur lost interest in his country and his people started fighting again.

Meanwhile, Arthur’s evil half-sister Morgan and her son Mordred plotted to kill Arthur and take over the kingdom. Would they succeed? Read the book King Arthur retold by Janet Hardy-Gould to find out what happened in the end.

From zero to hero TEN-year-old Newton Newman (or Newt) had a popular football star elder brother Chris. Newt, on the other hand, had never been regarded as special. When Chris was knocked into a coma during a major football game, Newt’s friends – JJ and Cecil – were deeply concerned. To get his mind off his brother’s condition, they decided to take him out for Halloween. Using some of Chris’s old clothes, they helped Newt create a unique Halloween costume, giving him a new identity. Dressed as

Captain Nobody, Newt felt a new sense of confidence. He wore the costume even after Halloween was over. To Newt’s own surprise, he found himself involved in heroic deeds. He helped a confused old man find his way home, foiled a jewellery store robbery and cleared a landing path for a plane in distress. Through it all, Newt kept waiting and hoping that his brother would regain consciousness. Read the novel Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford to find out how the story ends.

When JJ and Cecil began discussing Halloween costumes, Newt looked for ideas from some of his old superhero sketchbooks. Here is an extract from Captain Nobody.

In groups of four, look in The Star for an object and think of some special “superhero” qualities that you could attach to it. On a sheet of A3 paper, create a poster of a superhero based on the object. Give your superhero a name and provide a short description. Include at least three special properties or powers related to it. When you are done, take turns presenting your superhero in class.

Ask the class to vote for the most remarkable superhero. Then, display the poster on the classroom notice board.

I raced home from school and pulled out a stack of my old Secret Superhero Sketchbooks from my closet. I hoped I might find inspiration from one of the characters I had created over the years. But with every page flip, that hope faded.

For one thing, most of my heroes stretch and transform their bodies into fantastic shapes. Tommy Origami, for instance, can fold his body into a packet the size of a postage stamp.

Baby elephant crashes through roof of house A WOMAN was injured after a baby elephant crashed through the roof of her house and knocked her over.

It was reported that two adult elephants and a baby elephant were roaming around a hill path in a village in Gudalur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday.

Somehow, the baby elephant wandered onto the roof of the house, which was located nearby.

The roof gave way, causing the animal to fall.

It ran around the house, knocking down the woman.

She suffered minor injuries.

One of the adult elephants barged into the house and herded out the baby.

Stepping up in times of need IN the play The Right Thing to Do by Martyn Ford, three passers-by David, Patrick and Rebecca saw a man who appeared to be ill lying on the street. They were not sure what to do and soon fell into an argument about whose responsibility it was to do something. As they continued arguing, a woman dressed in blue appeared. She promptly took charge of the situation and began giving instructions to the other three. Although they were not too happy, they did what they were told: David called for an ambulance, Rebecca got some water while Patrick

checked the man’s pulse and gave him his heart pills. By the time the ambulance arrived, the man had recovered and identified himself as the famous TV chef Michael Scott. Meanwhile, the woman in blue had slipped away. Mr. Scott thanked David, Patrick and Rebecca because he believed they had saved his life. As Mr. Scott left, the three of them congratulated themselves for saving the life of a man, especially someone famous. They even went so far as to say that the woman in blue had just been bossy and not helped in any way.

The three passers-by believed that it was they – and not the woman in blue – who had saved the man’s life. They made no reference to the fact that without her, they might still be arguing about whose job it was to do something. They had also chosen to forget their own reluctance in following the woman’s instructions.

In groups of four, look in The Star for an article depicting a situation. Cut it out

and paste it on a sheet of A4 paper. Then, look for pictures of four movie characters. Cut them out and paste them beneath the article. In speech bubbles, write something they might say to claim credit for helping to make the situation better. When you are done, exchange papers with another group who will comment on the individuals’ claims. After they are done, run through their comments and write down any responses you may have.

Expert: Animal abusers might be mentally ill

In groups of four, look in The Star for an article that depicts situations in which some form of assistance may be desired. Cut it out and paste it on a sheet of A4 paper. Have a group discussion about what form of help would be beneficial and what action would not. In two separate columns beneath the article, write down three points under each of the headings: The Right Thing to Do and The Wrong Thing to Do. When you are done, exchange papers with another group and write down one extra point under each heading before returning the papers. Then, take turns to present your work in class.

KLANG: Those who intentionally hurt animals may be suffering from serious mental health problems, says an expert.

Such acts of cruelty were “a manifestation of underlying anti-social or psychopathic personality traits,” said Malaysian Mental Health Association deputy president Datuk Dr Andrew Mohanraj.

“They are characterised by impulsive behaviour, selfishness and cruelty, but what stands out most is their lack of remorse,” he said.

He was commenting in light of news reports on animal abuse, most recent being a man in Labis who put his caged dog over a fire.

He was allegedly upset with it for chewing up shoes and had posted a video and pictures of the “punishment” on Facebook. Police later found that the man was only trying to frighten it.
