MANY of you must be fans of superheroes such as Captain America and the X-Men. If you are, then you must surely have heard of Spider-Man. What was the turning point for Peter Parker, the character whose alter ego is Spider-Man? Here’s a little about the character Peter Parker. Peter is a 15-year-old photographer for his school magazine. While out on an assignment, he accidentally gets bitten by a radioactive spider. He then realises he has amazing abilities like super strength and agility, and the ability to cling to almost any surface. He struggles with this power and abuses it to some extent until a turning point in his life.

He loses his Uncle Ben in a burglary gone wrong due to his own lack of concern for events happening around him. Peter recalls his uncle’s last few words: With great power comes great responsibility.

So what is responsibility? Can it be replaced with any other words?

BASED on what you have picked up from the activities on the previous pages, you can define responsibility as being answerable (or accountable) for what you do or how you behave. Being responsible also means doing the right thing at the right time so others can depend on you. Here are some examples that make these definitions clearer.

Comic strips show people’s experiences in life. The stories are told in funny ways. Many people find them amusing because such things really do happen to them or to the people around them.

It starts with you Read this excerpt that appeared in The Star on March 6, 2017.

GEORGE TOWN: An aspiring actor and badminton player flew in from Taiwan to be among 400 people who auditioned for a role in the biopic of badminton hero Datuk Lee Chong Wei. Huang Tzu Wei, a county-level player from Taichung, said he learnt about the audition online and through Taiwanese newspapers. Having idolised Lee for a long time, the 17-year-old said he was ecstatic about trying for a part in the film, Rise of the Legend, which chronicles the Penangite’s steady rise in the badminton world.

“My friends kept telling me that my playing technique resembles that of Chong Wei. I knew I had to fly in to try my luck in the film as I also wish to pursue a career in acting. Hopefully, I can land a role,” said the teenager who started playing badminton when he was 10 and has been watching videos of Lee in action to hone his skills.

Huang was among the 400 who auditioned at the Permata Sports Complex in Paya Terubong yesterday.

The movie, produced by CB Pictures Sdn Bhd in association with MAHU Pictures, is slated to start shooting in July and for release during next Chinese New Year. Director Teng Bee said the storyline would be based on Lee’s book Dare to be a Champion.

RESPONSIBILITY is a big word, literally. And what it means is ownership and accountability. When we commit to responsibility, it means we are committing ourselves to lead, and to solve problems, and most importantly to follow through with our plan. Jeremy (in the comic strip Zits on Page 4) had good intentions; he wanted to cook a meal for his family. Unfortunately, he stopped short of being responsible.

Tzu Wei is keen to land a role in this movie. But being cast in a movie like this is a big commitment.

To act or not to act?

Experts also argue that while the Act could be effective in deterring some youth from staying out late at night or joining anti-social activities such as illegal racing, it would not tackle the root cause of why our teenagers get involved in them in the first place.

We need long-term planning to solve the underlying problem, says Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) social and transport psychology expert Prof Madya Dr Rozmi Ismail, who has done extensive research on anti-social behaviour among Malaysian youth, especially the Mat Rempit phenomenon.

“Our safety ethics is low, not just on the road, but also at home, work and other public places. One way is to have a safety syllabus in school – for example, it can be a part of the Bahasa Malaysia subject.”

THE cycling tragedy in Johor Baru last February saw eight teens on modified bikes killed when a car ploughed into them at 3am early on a Saturday. Following the incident, the Home Ministry revealed that it is mulling an Anti-social Behaviour Act in Malaysia.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who made the announcement, did not elaborate on the details of the Act, which could grant the police the power to order young people under the age of 16 to return home after 9pm.

It was shocking to read the report “JPJ: Over 50,000 ride motorcycles to school without licences” (The Star, Feb 11) and that the response to the MyLesen programme has not been good.

Since the soft approach does not seem to work, it is time the authorities got tough with those riding or driving without a valid licence. If students are allowed to break the law at such a young age, they may continue to do so as they become older. It’s now common to see motorcyclists beating the red light, riding against traffic, not wearing a crash helmet and carrying more than one passenger.

Another approach to consider is to make parents answerable to the authorities when their children break the law, including driving or riding without a licence. I am sure many children who drive or ride motor vehicles without a valid licence do so with the knowledge of their parents.
