OUR children are riding the great wave of technology today. They now have facts and procedures at their fingertips.

Teachers have to equip their students with a new set of skills that allow them to thrive in today’s global economy.

The activities in The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education pullout combine literacy skills with content to build this set of skills.

The key below indicates the skills integrated into the activities in this pullout.

Numbers you should know GROWING up can be fun! You gain more freedom and knowledge, and become a lot smarter! How do you get all this knowledge? It’s called life experiences.

Sometimes, we have good experiences but other times, we face nasty, unpleasant ones. Learning to tell the difference between good and bad experiences, and knowing what to do when you are faced with scary experiences, is all part of growing up.

The more you know how to handle a situation, the better prepared you are. That helps you to stay safe.

The Star carries important telephone numbers that the public may need.

Do you know where you can find these numbers? (Clue: Turn to the StarMetro section.) Tell your teacher on which page these numbers are printed.

Next, cut out five telephone numbers that you feel are very important and then paste them on “My personal list” below. Once you have done so, gather in groups of four with your list. Share your list with your group members. As a group, discuss and agree on a common list.

Take turns sharing your group’s list with the class. Explain to your classmates why each number your group has selected is important. This is because the entire class will eventually have to agree on just ONE list!

So, if you feel that the numbers on your list are important, make sure you present a strong argument for your case. Don’t forget to arrange the telephone numbers in order of importance, too!

When danger strikes IT’S a great big world out there. Everywhere you look, something is going on. Our planet is definitely a “happening” place!

Whether you stay indoors most of the time or enjoy the great outdoors, you would definitely want to stay safe and out of harm’s way. The trick to staying safe is being alert to dangers that can happen around you and knowing what to do when you are in a dangerous situation.

The Star publishes articles about local and global events. Some of these articles are tragic as they tell you sad things that have happened to people. They include incidents of drowning, fire and road accidents.

Many teens today graduate from ‘bicycle lajak’ to more dangerous stunts

PETALING JAYA: Modified frames, spruced up handlebars, lowered front forks and safety brakes removed – these are some of the modifications done on bicycles used by school kids and teenagers in their dangerous mat lajak menace.

Comprising mostly those aged 18 and below, they often “show off” their heavily-modified rides and dangerous “superman” stunts on social media. Sometimes, they upload videos to show how they modified the bicycles themselves.

“Besides the adrenaline rush and excitement, the boys tend to show their machoness in the presence of many,” said Universiti Sains Malaysia criminologist Assoc Prof P. Sundramoorthy.

“For them, falling down and getting injured are no major issues. Their application of extreme sports is wrong as it endangers themselves and also motorists,” he said of the case where a car slammed into 16 teenagers in Johor a few days ago.

Eight were killed while an equal number were injured when the car driven by a 22-year-old woman rammed into them while they were riding their bicycles in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Bike riding is a healthy form of exercise but must be carried out safely. A tragedy struck on Feb 18, 2017, when 16 teenagers were rammed down by a car at 3am. The students, all from Johor Baru, had been out on a joyride with their modified bicycles. They were racing and performing dangerous stunts on a road. WALK into a bookstore and what do you see lined up along the magazine racks? Faces of celebrities and prominent personalities on the front covers. Fame is society’s most powerful force. Those who have it become the super elite of society! But does fame equal success?

You be the judge of that!

Let’s play a warm-up game called “Guess the Famous Person”. Go through your copy of The Star. Cut out a picture of a famous person. Place it on your teacher’s table when done. Next, everyone will stand in a line with his back faced towards the teacher, who will stick a picture of a famous person.

Walk around the class, asking your classmates 10 questions about who your celebrity is. You can only use “Yes” or “No” questions. (Remember, you have to answer questions to help your friend find out who his famous personality is, too.) Keep circling around until you have completed all 10 questions.

Do a final count to see how many of you found out who your celebrities were.

The right friends

IN October 2010, The Star reported on a survey which stated that a Malaysian had an average of 233 friends on Facebook. Besides that, we apparently spent at least nine hours weekly on this site.

Does this still hold water? After all, we now have other social media applications. Well, the one thing we do know for sure from these statistics is that friendship is important.

Scientists have shared some interesting facts about friendship. For example, childhood friendships end mostly because of dissimilarity and that animals make friends, too. Friendship is also one of the very first things we learn about.

As I ate breakfast, I listened to Cecil’s CD of drum solos. All that noise and energy lifted my spirits.
