Drive or be driven By MAWARNI MUSTAFA

FROM time to time, we hear of people being harassed and exposed to crimes while taking public transportation. For girls and women, such occurrence can be especially traumatising. On Oct 10 last year, Riding Pink – a taxi service by women for women – was launched to give female commuters a safer alternative. The first of its kind in Malaysia, it has received overwhelming response from the public, according to a report in StarMetro on Dec 2, 2016. From Nov 21 to 27, it recorded up to 100 trips. Its drivers have also been asked to transport schoolchildren to and from school. Apart from providing women with a safer mode of transport, it has also created more job opportunities for women, especially stay-at-home mums who want to earn an extra income, said its founder Denise Tan. On the subject of safe public transportation, let us take a look at the following tips:

SAFETY TIPS AS A DRIVER

AS A PASSENGER

● Have your emergency contact on the screen of your handphone. If not, make it easily accessible.

● Take note of the car plate number.

● Do safety checks. Before you drive out, you need to check that your car – such as its lights, tyres and battery terminals – is in perfect condition. You do not want your car breaking down at night in an unfamiliar area. ● Consider installing a dashboard camera in your vehicle.

● Tell a friend or family member and send details of the car to them. ● Be aware of your surroundings and don’t fall asleep. ● If you’re not familiar with the area, use Google Map or Waze to see if the route matches the route of the driver to make sure you are not brought far away from where you are supposed to go. (The Star, Dec 2, 2016)

ACTIVITY 1 Based on the infographic, one of the tips for passengers is to be aware of their surroundings and to not fall asleep on their journey to their destination. How would you keep track of your surroundings and also stay awake and alert while you are on the road? In a group of three, discuss and then, complete the mind maps below.

How to be aware of your surroundings

How to stay awake and alert

ACTIVITY 2 This activity involves carrying out a WebQuest, which means finding information from the Internet to complete an enquiry-oriented task. In the same group, plan a drive from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Institut Aminuddin Baki (IAB) in Bandar Enstek, Negri Sembilan. First, decide which of you will take on the following roles and tasks. ROLE

TASK

Car owner/provider

Your task is to choose a car that you think will be the most suitable for the journey. Provide the details of the car to your group and state your reasons for choosing that car. As you can see from the infographic above, you need to do safety checks before you drive out. Hence, come up with a safety checklist.

Trip planner

Your task is to map out the trip and to provide details of the route to your group. Find out the exact distance from one city to another. Another tip from the infographic is to make your emergency contact easily accessible. So, please include this in your plan, as well.

Driver

Your task is to drive for the journey. Decide when to start the journey, and when and where to stop, based on the information given by the trip planner. Take note of the things you are expected to see along the journey. You also need to calculate the cost of fuel and other charges for the trip.

After all of you have completed your research, design a poster for your trip that includes: ● A map of the route ● The cost of the trip ● A picture of the car used Finally, present your work in class.
