OVERCONSUMPTION of alcohol can lead to alcoholism, a condition in which one is addicted to liquor. It is the most serious form of alcohol abuse as the drinker is unable to manage his drinking habits. What is even more worrying is underage drinking, which can damage a child’s mental and physical health at a time when his brain is going through major developments. Moreover, this could lead to poor performance in school. Therefore, it is imperative that the young learn to say no to alcohol from young. In groups of four, look in The Star for articles about alcohol addiction. Scan the articles to find out more about its causes and effects. Then, fill the information in the graphic organisers below. Next, discuss three ways to prevent underage drinking.

Ways to prevent underage drinking:
1. Cause
Effect
2. 3.
Now, imagine a situation where your underage friend had taken to drinking. How would you discourage him from doing it? Act out a skit – with a positive outcome – in class.

In pairs, look in The Star for three news reports on incidents involving drunken behaviour. Cut them out and paste them on a sheet of A3 paper. Then, provide a description, as well as the outcome, of each incident (bearing in mind the 5Ws and 1H questions). Next, imagine how different the outcome of each incident would be if the person(s) involved had been sober. Write down the possible outcome.

For 25-year-old Mark, the memories of consuming alcohol with his friends while still in school remain vivid. Mark, (not his real name), said he knew it was wrong to drink in school but peer pressure led to his liquor-fuelled misadventures. “At the time, skipping classes, going to a convenience store and getting a bottle of whisky was my idea of fun.” He started drinking at the age of 13 and it went on for 12 years. Every day in school, he would share a bottle with five of his friends. Teachers caught him, but he found new ways to hide his addiction from them. Even his parents did not have a clue that he used to go back home drunk.
Mark has now stopped drinking after a friend died in a road accident after a drinking session. “I was with him at the time. We left and I had to call my brother to fetch me because I was totally drunk. “The next day, I got a phone call from my friend saying that he met with an accident. A week later, he died. I was shocked and I told myself the drinking had to stop. “To all the schoolchildren out there, have fun in school but don’t spoil it by consuming alcohol. If I had not been drinking, who knows, I might have scored well in my PMR and SPM and gone on to better things. “My pursuit for ‘happiness’ hampered my goals. I am 25 now and thank God, it is not too late to bounce back. I just hope other students will not follow my ways.”
