A sudden departure
IN the poem What Has Happened To Lulu?, we hear the voice of a child asking her mother about the whereabouts of her sibling. Lulu’s bed is empty and her money box has disappeared. The child heard voices and the roar of an engine the night before. She wonders if that had anything to do with Lulu’s disappearance. There is also a note that is presumably left by Lulu but her mother crumples it up and throws it into the fire. Although her mother tries not to reveal her emotions, it is obvious that she is deeply troubled. The child’s questions and description of the situation give the impression that Lulu is the older child who has left home after a disagreement.

What Has Happened To Lulu? What has happened to Lulu, mother? What has happened to Lu? There’s nothing in her bed but an old rag-doll And by its side a shoe. Why is her window wide, mother, The curtain flapping free, And only a circle on the dusty shelf Where her money-box used to be? Why do you turn your head, mother, And why do tear-drops fall? And why do you crumple that note on the fire And say it is nothing at all? I woke to voices late last night, I heard an engine roar. Why do you tell me the things I heard Were a dream and nothing more?

I heard somebody cry, mother, In anger or in pain, But now I ask you why, mother, You say it was a gust of rain. Why do you wander about as though You don’t know what to do? What has happened to Lulu, mother? What has happened to Lu? – Charles Causley

ExAmPLE
Dear Diary, Today is the saddest day of my life. Lu is gone! I don’t know where she is now. Mummy doesn’t know where she is either. I have asked her about 11 times and all she does is give me a strange look. Lu left Bonnie, too. She said she would never ever part with Bonnie and now she’s left her.
