Adopt green habits

ADVANCED

The three Rs

PRACTISING environmentally-friendly habits has far-reaching effects, even if we don’t see the results immediately. We must begin with ourselves and our families at home, before we mobilise our larger communities – classrooms, schools, neighbourhoods and states – in order to have a greater positive impact on the environment. It’s easy being green when we put our hands and heads together to carry out green projects, both big and small.

Talk to your group members and write down the names of those who have the following habits. Ask them extra questions and take notes. For example, how many different types of recycling bins do you have?

Find someone who… has a recycling system at home carries a reusable bottle donates old clothes to charity takes public transport whenever possible has planted a tree before knows where to send recyclable items

SOME 70 participants took part in a car boot barter trade event held for the first time in Ipoh by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kinta. The event saw 40 participating vehicles converging at the parking area in front of Glamour Square in Bercham on Sunday. Car boots were filled with miscellaneous used items such as books, clothing, toys, old typewriters and an old stamp album. Organising chairman Vin Choo Chin Yip said JCI was encouraging people to recycle, reuse, and reduce waste. “Instead of throwing away old things, people can exchange the items with the rest at the event.” Ipoh city councillor Aldrich Low added, “The new trend of barter trade must become a habit among families, friends and neighbours.” The Star, May 1, 2017

Advertisements are a powerful way of mobilising social change. Use your creativity to come up with a public service announcement encouraging people to reduce, reuse and recycle. In groups of four, prepare a storyboard for a public service announcement with a message on waste management. You can cut out pictures from the pages of The Star. It could be focused on any of the following: ●

Recycle: How to separate your rubbish

● Reuse:

Creative ideas on reusing old items

Reduce: Think before you buy,

or say no to food waste

Part B Imagine that you are involved in a car boot sale. How would you do it? In pairs, work out how you would exchange your items without using money. You may negotiate the quantity of smaller items. For example, a basketball could be exchanged for three Lego Superheroes figurines. Role-play the exchange in class.

Finally, based on the storyboard, act out the public service announcement in class.
