Do as I say, not as I do? AMERICAN writer James Baldwin once said, “Children have never been good at listening to their elders, but they never fail to imitate them.” How is this applicable to the way children perceive respect? People show respect in many ways. They speak and act kindly, and avoid insults and cruel comments. Even if they may not share the same beliefs, likes or dislikes, they still demonstrate respect.

Collaborating ● Listen ● Contribute respectfully ● Compromise ● Attain goal

A teenager and her friend had a tough time when they tried to pray at a surau in a popular supermarket. The girl, only known as Arabella, tweeted her encounter with a woman who harassed her and her friend while they were trying to pray. The location of the surau was undisclosed. “I walked into the surau with a teenager who had dyed blonde hair and was wearing a short dress. “When we entered, several women in the surau stared at us as they probably thought the blonde wasn’t a Muslim,” she wrote on her Twitter. The woman then pulled their prayer garments off and refused to let them pray. “I spoke nicely and asked if both of us could pray but she refused (to let us),” said Arabella. She shrugged it off and tried to pray again, but the woman pulled her hair, causing Arabella to fall. Someone then stepped in to calm things down.

Here’s a story that appeared in The Star’s Other News & Views section on Feb 6, 2017. After reading the story, talk about specific actions from a character or certain main characters that either demonstrated or did not demonstrate respect. In your opinion, how should a case like this be handled so that no untoward incidents happen in the future? Discuss your opinions in groups of four. Once the discussion is completed, each group takes turns to summarise the team’s conclusion. Remember to justify your reasoning based on facts, as well.

Here are three idioms using the word “respect”. Each idiom has a slightly different meaning when used in this way.

Read the short excerpts taken from The Star. Then, decide which meaning fits most accurately. Discuss your answers as a class.

As the deal was completed on Sunday, West Ham co-owner David Sullivan expressed his “sincere disappointment that Dimitri Payet did not show the same commitment and respect to West Ham that the club and fans showed him”.

MIRI: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) branches and divisions celebrated Chinese New Year modestly and without lavish fanfare out of respect for the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

“We only cook Hainanese dishes with chicken rice as the main dish during the reunion dinner and on the first day of Chinese New Year as it was my grandparents’ tradition to do so,” he said. After his grandparents passed away, his family continued the tradition by visiting his uncles to pay their respects to them.
