BULLYING is an ugly behaviour that takes place in many forms. Unfortunately, this happens regularly in a school environment. With the increase of online connectivity, bullies are attacking their victims using a different platform. The Malaysian authorities are not taking this issue lightly at all. On Feb 7, 2017, it was reported that Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon announced to the public that laws on cyber bullying are being drafted. With an anti-bullying programme in place, the police will join forces with schools to curb the problem. Chong proposed the following to be implemented under the programme: • Police officers to give a talk to school students at least once a month on why they should stay away from crime. • Schools and police officers to check on students’ disciplinary problems. What are your opinions on these plans? Will they work? Discuss in class.

You have heard people say that “every cause has an effect” and “every action has a reaction”. Following the two propositions raised by our Deputy Education Minister, create a five-step chain reaction that may result from them.
Police give a talk to students during the assembly once a month.
The school and police check on students’ disciplinary problems.
EXAMPLE
1.
Students report bullying cases to the discipline teacher.
2.
The discipline teacher brings it up to the school principal.
3.
The principal investigates the case with the discipline teacher.
4.
The bully and victims are called to resolve the matter.
5.
The bully is given a warning letter with the possibility of suspension if his negative behaviour persists. Here’s an article published on Feb 26, 2017, highlighting one of the main punishments that will be imposed on a school gang leader if found guilty of bullying. While suspending students from school for six months acts as a disciplinary measure, do you think that this method is sufficient to curb the bullying problem? In a group of four, discuss the implications of suspending a school gang leader for six months. Brainstorm and come up with at least three reasons each as to why it will or will not work.
