INTERMEDIATE Responsibility

A question of oversight? BASED on what you have picked up from the activities on the previous pages, you can define responsibility as being answerable (or accountable) for what you do or how you behave. Being responsible also means doing the right thing at the right time so others can depend on you. Here are some examples that make these definitions clearer.

This is Jeremy. Connie, seen here washing the dishes, is Jeremy’s mother. • Is Jeremy being responsible here?

Comic strips show people’s experiences in life. The stories are told in funny ways. Many people find them amusing because such things really do happen to them or to the people around them. Here are three comic strips taken from The Star that suggest how responsibility is not being applied. Can you discuss what they are? Work on this in groups of four. Then, share your answers as a class.

• Why do you say so? • In what way can Jeremy show responsibility in this scene?

Look at this scene. The signboard belongs to the man who is sitting on the street. • Would you be proud to have a father or brother who is trying to make a living like this? • Why do you say so? • In what way is this character (let’s call him Sam) showing irresponsibility?

Here’s a scene in class. The characters in the scene are animals (a cat and dogs). There is an expression in the English language that goes: “the dog ate my homework”. It is a favourite excuse used by schoolchildren. • Can you guess what it means? • Why is the context of this cartoon funny to the reader? • Are you guilty of not completing your homework and chores on time without being reminded? • Why is that irresponsible?

As a class, discuss with your teacher how you would show responsibility if…

1. You broke the wheel off your brother’s new skateboard? 2. Your friend asked you to play and you hadn’t finished your homework?

3. You were playing a really fun game at your friend’s house and it was time to go home?

4. You promised your mum you would clean your room but you just didn’t feel like it?

5. It was time to go to bed and you just remembered that your book report was due the next day?

Now, in groups of three, pick one of the scenes (from Numbers 1 to 5). Then, pick a comic character from Star2. Draw a three-frame comic strip showing how something “bad” happened because this character did not show responsibility. Add speech or thought bubbles if you need to make your idea clearer.
