INTERMEDIATE Are you career ready?
When you grow up
“WHAT do you want to be when you grow up?” Everyone would have been asked this question at least once in their lives. Have you always had a clear ambition, or has your ambition changed over the years? If you do not have a clear idea about your future career, that’s okay! Finding your career is not a goal; it’s a journey of discovering yourself – your strengths and weaknesses, interests and passions. It’s also an exciting journey of exploring the world around you – finding out about different companies, industries and discoveries. List out at least two jobs which belong to each of the six career clusters on the right. You may use the jobs from the Part A activity.
Part C Your teacher will assign one of the career clusters to your group. Using words and pictures taken from The Star, prepare a poster which incorporates the following information about your career cluster. (Tip: refer to the job advertisements in the classifieds section of the newspaper.) I must be good at… (skills and knowledge)
I like… (areas of interest)
● Contribute respectfully
Industrial and engineering technology
Health services
Part B
In groups of four, scan the pages of The Star for jobs that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Cut out the jobs and paste them on a “careers alphabet chart”. For example, cut out the word “teacher” and stick it next to the letter “T”. Your teacher will set a time limit. The group who has the most number of jobs wins!

A career is…
● Aural
Play this game with a friend. To start, spin a pen in the middle of the “wheel” on the right. Then, answer the question that the pen points to when it stops spinning. Your partner will have to ask questions to find out more about your thoughts on the subject. Take turns spinning the wheel and answering the questions. When the teacher says time’s up, each of you will have to go to the front of the class and share what you have found out about your partner’s career goals.
Planning for a career is important because…
A career I think would be fun is…
The education level I want to achieve is…
My current career goal is… A career I think I would be good at is…
