It gets murkier THE oceans are a rich source of marine life. We are dependent on them and therefore, it is important for us to keep them clean. Sadly however, many of them have been polluted to the extent of harming marine life. According to softschools.com, each day, thousands of tonnes of trash and wastes are dumped into the oceans; each year, discarded fishing nets kill up to 300,000 dolphins and porpoises, while one million sea birds die due to pollution. Corals, too, have died due to global warming.

Vietnam fishermen still in deep waters

HANOI: Vietnam is maintaining the ban on deep-water fishing in four central provinces. The ban was introduced after a Taiwanese-owned steel factory discharged toxins into the sea last year. It caused the country’s worst environmental disaster. Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said that fishermen should not fish for seafood in deep water until the Ministry of Health finds it safe to eat and resources are restored. The US$10.6bil (RM45.9bil) steel complex, owned by Formosa Plastics Group, discharged toxins such as cyanide and phenol that exceeded allowable limits during a test run in April last year. It caused massive deaths of fish and other sea life along more than 200km of coastline. The incident devastated fishing communities and tourism in the four provinces. The factory owner was ordered to pay US$500mil (RM2.16bil) in compensation. In September, the Ministry of Health said tests on samples of sea life in shallow water such as tunas and mackerels in the four provinces showed that they were safe to eat, while 132 out of 1,040 samples tested on sea life in deep water such as shrimps, crabs and squids were found to contain phenol.

In pairs, answer the questions below based on the passage above. Then, as a class, discuss the answers.

1. How did a steel factory cause an environmental disaster in four central provinces in Vietnam?

A.

As a class, discuss the meaning of the words below.

Word 1. Discharged 2. Disaster 3. Restored 4. Exceeded 5. Massive 6. Devastated

Now, in pairs, write six sentences using the words above. These sentences must flow from one to the other to form a short story. Then, read out the story in class.

EXAMPLE

2. When would fishermen be allowed to fish for seafood in deep water? 3. Name two of the toxins discharged by the steel factory. 4. What are the effects of the toxins on sea life and the fishing communities in the four provinces? 5. How much did the factory owner have to pay for the damage caused? 6. Why were the tunas and mackerels safe to eat?

Imagine you were a sea creature. Due to pollution, your habitat was no longer the same as it used to be. In pairs, write an acrostic poem expressing your sadness, anger and helplessness. At least five words must be taken from The Star. When you are done, recite the poem in class. An acrostic poem is a type of poetry in which the first, last or other letters in a line spell out a particular word or phrase. The simplest acrostic poem is one where the first letter of each line spells out a word or phrase.
