Elementary Reach for the stars
Climb every mountain FAIRY tales tell us that dreams come true, with a visit from a fairy, a touch of a wand, a sprinkle of fairy dust, a kiss from a crown prince, or the magic word “Abracadabra!” We know better than to
trust fairy tales, don’t we? In the real world, “magic” happens when we set our minds on big goals and work hard to get there! It’s never easy; we must be disciplined, focused and persistent. Read this story adapted from The Star and then answer the questions that follow.

“You need to be confident. You have to be strong in both heart and soul. One mistake and you could slip to your death,” he said, adding that the most difficult part of the task was the descent. Raman, who is in the automotive business, also paid a price: the extreme cold caused frostbite on one finger and toe. He is being treated for the injuries. Training for the expedition began last year, with him climbing Mount Lobuche (6,145m) in Nepal. Other challenges in this year’s climbing season include waiting for the fixing of ropes to the mountain. As a result, he was stuck at the base camp for almost two weeks. The Star, May 29, 2017
PETALING JAYA: For more than 10 years, Raman Nair Hachoodan dreamt of scaling the peak of Mount Everest, located 8,848m above sea level. The 42-year-old from Shah Alam managed to make his dream come true on May 20, when he set foot on the summit of the world’s highest mountain under extremely difficult circumstances. “It was a great feeling to touch the roof of the earth. My hard work and training paid off. It is the most difficult thing I have done in my life,” said an ecstatic Raman.

Think about a personal goal that you would like to achieve. For example, getting straight As in your examinations, saving money to buy a new pencil case, speaking English more confidently, and making new friends in class. Reflect on your goal. Then, create a “Reach for the Stars” collage for your classroom.
Step 1:
Write your goal in the star provided and cut it out.
Step 2:
Draw the outline of your hand and arm (stop at your elbow) onto a page of The Star newspaper and cut along the lines. Choose a page with your favourite colours or pictures.
Step 3:
Stick the star and your hand outline onto a backing paper and put it up on the classroom noticeboard. Take a look at what others have done.
