When danger strikes IT’S a great big world out there. Everywhere you look, something is going on. Our planet is definitely a “happening” place! Whether you stay indoors most of the time or enjoy the great outdoors, you would definitely want to stay safe and out of harm’s way. The trick to staying safe is being alert to dangers that can happen around you and knowing what to do when you are in a dangerous situation.

The Star publishes articles about local and global events. Some of these articles are tragic as they tell you sad things that have happened to people. They include incidents of drowning, fire and road accidents. Here are a few categories of the types of accidents that can happen to anyone, anytime. In groups of four, scan The Star for such articles. Read the articles as a

group, then decide which category they fall under. Write the headlines of the articles and the page numbers in the correct columns. Finally, share your findings as a class. Briefly tell your friends what your articles are about. (Note to teacher: Distributing copies of the newspaper collected over two weeks will add variety to your students’ articles.)

As a group, pick one article from your findings (in NiE Activity 1). Discuss a plan of action you would have taken if you had been in the situation. What would you have done differently? How would you have saved yourself so that your situation would turn out positively? Once your group has decided on the action plan, rewrite the news article where the person(s) involved used your action plan to overcome the incident, resulting in a good outcome. (Note to teacher: Use the variety of articles picked by the groups to discuss personal safety with your students.)

Many teens today graduate from ‘bicycle lajak’ to more dangerous stunts
PETALING JAYA: Modified frames, spruced up handlebars, lowered front forks and safety brakes removed – these are some of the modifications done on bicycles used by school kids and teenagers in their dangerous mat lajak menace. Comprising mostly those aged 18 and below, they often “show off” their heavily-modified rides and dangerous “superman” stunts on social media. Sometimes, they upload videos to show how they modified the bicycles themselves. “Besides the adrenaline rush and excitement, the boys tend to show their machoness in the presence of many,” said Universiti Sains Malaysia criminologist Assoc Prof P. Sundramoorthy. “For them, falling down and getting injured are no major issues. Their application of extreme sports is wrong as it endangers themselves and also motorists,” he said of the case where a car slammed into 16 teenagers in Johor a few days ago. Eight were killed while an equal number were injured when the car driven by a 22-year-old woman rammed into them while they were riding their bicycles in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Bike riding is a healthy form of exercise but must be carried out safely. A tragedy struck on Feb 18, 2017, when 16 teenagers were rammed down by a car at 3am. The students, all from Johor Baru, had been out on a joyride with their modified bicycles. They were racing and performing dangerous stunts on a road. Read the article below and discuss the questions that follow.

What could have been done to avoid such a tragedy? (Discuss the following safety measures: the importance of wearing high visibility clothing, putting on a cycle helmet, using lights at night, and keeping bicycles in good working order.) Should teenagers be allowed to carry out activities in the wee hours? Why or why not?
