Elementary Short story Note to the teacher

OUR children are riding the great wave of technology today. They now have facts and procedures at their fingertips. Teachers have to equip their students with new skills that allow them to thrive in today’s global economy. The activities in The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education pullout combine literacy skills with content to build this set of skills. The key below indicates the skills integrated into the activities in this pullout.

Flying high IN the village where he lived, Anil was known as the King of Kites because he was very good at making and mending kites. He often made splendid kites for his friends. His mother, who was very good at sewing, was known as the Queen of Needles. She made beautiful clothes for the villagers. One day, Anil heard about a wedding in the village. He planned to make twelve beautiful kites with sequins and bright tails for his friends to fly in honour of the bride. However, his mother needed his help as she had to make all the clothes for the wedding. She also needed Anil’s sequins, ribbons and string because she did not have enough. Anil helped his mother but he felt very sad because he couldn’t make the kites for his friends. When his friends saw how disappointed he was, they found a way to help him. In the story, Anil was known as The King of Kites because he knew about kites. His mother was known as The Queen of Needles because she knew how to sew. In groups of four, think about the things that you each ● know a lot about; ● know how to do very well; or ● like doing very much. Then, choose a royal title from the list below. Create a title for each of you (similar to the King of Kites) based on what you know a lot about. Next, find pictures from The Star to represent each of you. Cut them out and paste them on a sheet of A4 paper. Write down your titles, with a speech bubble each to introduce yourself. When you are done, take turns to act out your roles in class.

At the wedding, everyone praised Anil’s mother for her stitching… And everyone admired Anil’s twelve beautiful kites flying high in the sky. In groups of four, look in The Star for five words or phrases that are related to praise and admiration. Cut them out and paste them on a sheet of A4 paper. Then, cut out a picture of a person representing a guest at the wedding. In a speech bubble, write a sentence expressing the guest’s praise of Anil or his mother. Use at least one of the five words or phrases to form your sentence.
