Elementary Staying healthy
Note to the teacher
century learning skills
OUR children are riding the great wave of technology today. They now have facts and procedures at their fingertips. Teachers have to equip their students with new skills that allow them to thrive in today’s global economy. The activities in The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education pullout combine literacy skills with current content to build this set of skills. The key below indicates the skills integrated into the activities in this pullout.

Beyond the body
WHEN we think of being healthy, physical health comes to mind immediately. That includes eating a balanced diet and staying active through movement and sports. However, it is important to remember that health also includes our mental, emotional, as well as social health.

What are some good habits of a healthy person? Think about what a healthy person may do every day. Work with a partner and share your ideas. You may also look for information in The Star. Then, write down a good habit next to each of the puzzle pieces forming the human figure on the right.
EXAMPLE
When you are done, present your “healthy person” puzzle to your teacher and classmates. As a class, cut out the best “healthy habit” puzzle pieces to form a brand new “healthy person” to be displayed on the classroom noticeboard.

With a partner, look in The Star for a picture that demonstrates good health or a healthy environment. Cut it out and paste it on a sheet of A4 paper. Then, write at least three sentences explaining why you have chosen it to represent the picture of health.

You’ve probably heard people say “Health is Wealth”. It simply means that it is more important for us to be healthy than rich. This is because being healthy is a precious thing; if you are healthy, you are considered wealthy. Did you realise that both “health” and “wealth” end with
the “th” sound? The word search below has 14 words that end with “th”. One has been provided for you. Circle as many health-related words as you can find. Compare answers with a friend and explain how each word is related to health.
