CHALLENGINGOURSELVESANDINSPIRINGOTHERS

Physical activity is vital for all children as it strengthens their muscles, heart and lungs, and improves their coordination, balance, posture and flexibility.

While our students have been involved in informal physicalactivityaspartofthecurriculum, theynever experienced a Sports Day as those they would have attended at other schools. This year, we were determined to have our first ever Extraordinary Minds-Ashley’s Learning Center Sports Day Like all other students, our students deserve an avenue to experience the adrenaline rush of a cheering crowd screamingtheirnamesastheycrossthefinishline.

Our children's resilience was proven on Friday 26th May at our 1st Annual Sports Day. Each child participated in one or more event. The excitement expressed was heartwarming, to say the least The packed schedule included a variety of mainstream and novelty events such as the hot potato race, the lime and spoon race, the walking race, the flat race, the socks race, the dressing race, the balloon race, the eating race, the needle and thread race, the drinking race and the shuttle race. There were Junior andSeniorgroupsineachcategory.Wetriedourvery best to ensure these activities were fun and appealingtoourstudents

One teacher described the day as ‘magnificent’. It wasobviousthatourparentshadasmuchfunasour children and seeing the support given was amazing! It encouraged us to start planning next year ' s event, asweanticipatealargerturnout.

The day would not have been possible without our supporters and volunteers, who provided the venue, refreshments, lunch, prizes, etc. and took the time to spenditwithourchildreninvariouscapacities Thank you!Lookoutforusin2024!

What’s in a Score

“For one and a half hours weekly, the teachers of ALC engage in Professional Development. This is done to ensure that we remain on the cutting edge of what’s happening in special education. For the past two weeks, we have been studying Psychoeducational Assessments and learning to interpret the scores reported in these documents.

Most persons fall within the blue band at low to high average levels. Students with special educational needs may fall within the blue band, particularly those with sensory disabilities eg., the hearing impaired and visually impaired, provided the appropriate educational resources are available to them. Many children in special ed fall within the

green, red and cream bands to the right and left of the blue. Special Education includes a range of abilities from the cognitively impaired to the gifted and talented.
