Thestudentsassistedwiththebakingofthegoodiesaswellassellingthesedelicioustreats. This exercise allowed them to enhance their fine motor skills as well as teach them the fundamentalvaluesofmoneyexchangeandcounting.

Assistive Technology
Very often I am asked, “ How do your students who are nonverbal communicate their needs?” Although not aways accessible to students who need them, iPads come equipt with programs which allow students with autism and other disabilities to communicate. New vocabulary can be added thus enhancing the student’s ability to have ‘conversations’ as they mature and as they become more proficient in the use of the device.

DrYeapBanHar,aworldrenownedmathematicseducator,facilitatedatwo-dayworkshopon February 9th and 10th, here in Provo, at the invitation of Ashley’s Learning Center and the MinistryofEducation.Theworkshopfocusedon'bestpractices'usedinSingaporewhichhave contributedtothatcountryplacing#1intheworldinstudentperformanceinmathematics. Dr.BanHaridentifiedfiveKeyCompetenciesthatmustbedevelopedinstudentsiftheyareto become competent in mathematics and these include visualization, generalization, number sense,metacognitionandcommunication.Oncetheseskillsaredevelopedstudentswillbeon theirwaytomathmastery.
