Michael Hanshaw I am happy to announce that—for the fourth year in a row — our Trumbull County ESC has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education as a High Performing ESC. This accolade, which recognizes our work for the 2018-2019 school year, is attributed to the 275 members of our outstanding and dedicated staff who continually go above and beyond to meet the needs of our partnering school districts and the students we serve.

Examples of these efforts, some of which are highlighted in this edition of our newsletter, include Innovative Day, JA/TCESC College, Career and Trades Conference, STEAM Powered Learning and Striving Readers.

We appreciate our aligned school districts and look forward to working collaboratively with all of you in 2020. Until then, have a happy holiday season.

TCESC High Performing ESC

The Ohio Department of Education, for the fourth year in a row, has recognized the Trumbull County Educational Service Center as a High Performing ESC, meaning our programs are meeting the needs of partnering school districts through our shared services model that enables schools to keep costs down and remain fiscally sound.

“We are very proud to again receive this recognition from the Ohio Department of Education,” said TCESC Superintendent Michael Hanshaw. “The Trumbull County ESC remains committed to enhancing the educational opportunities we offer students through an array of exceptional services, all while remaining fiscally responsible to our Trumbull County community.”

The 2018-2019 sign joins those for the school years of 20172018, 2016-2017 and 2015-2016.

#InnovativeDa Professional Learning Day sparks inspiration, fuels innovation & collaboration among Trumbull County public school educators WARREN — Hundreds of Trumbull County educators gathered Nov. 5 for the Trumbull County Educational Service Center’s second Innovative Day. Sessions were spread out across three facilities in Warren — Warren G. Harding High School, Lincoln PK-8 School and Willard PK-8 School.

Keynote speaker Tom Murray, director of Innovation for Future Ready School and a bestselling author, kicked off the day at 8 a.m. at Warren G. Harding before visiting Lincoln and Willard.

He stressed the importance of being intentional in our interactions with students. Dr. Joe Sanfelippo, superintendent of the Fall Creek School District in Fall Creek, Wis., discussed amplifying the voices around us. Other presenters included Amie Dean “Behavior Queen,” behavior specialist, and physical education professors Douglas Ellison from Kent State Main Campus and Dr. Mary Lavine of Youngstown State University. Educators from across the county also presented sessions in their fields of expertise.

College, Career & Trades Conference opens doors to pos NILES — More than 4,000 high school students from 21 Trumbull County school districts attended last month’s JA of Mahoning Valley/TCESC College, Career and Trades Fair.

The all-day event, a first-of-its-kind for Trumbull County, was held at the former Sears at the Eastwood Mall and included an evening session for parents and the public.

Denise Holloway, supervisor, TCESC’s Trumbull Student Assistance Consortium, said the conference provided an opportunity for students and their parents to meet with higher education representatives, business owners and skilled trades leaders at a central location.

TCTC Career Corner class produces learning avenue show for students

CHAMPION — Trumbull County Career and Technical Center’s Career Corner class has launched a new educational learning avenue for students in middle school and early high school.

The class is producing a monthly show focused on career pathways. Kris Doran, interactive multimedia instructor at TCTC, said the goal is for schools in Trumbull County to use the show’s content for students to gain knowledge about various careers.

TCTC students produce and man the show as well as serve as subject matter experts from their respective career fields. Industry professionals serve as guests on the show and participate in a live question and answer segment. Learn more here.

TCESC Audiology From providing state-mandated hearing screenings to advising schools in choosing assistive technology for hearing impaired students, the Trumbull County ESC’s Educational Audiology Department serves all school districts in Trumbull County.

Our audiology team is made up of educational audiologists Christine Fullerman and Susan Jaros. So far this year, our team has performed approximately 1,730 hearing screenings. Students who do not pass these screenings are referred to the TCESC for hearing evaluations.

Last year, the TCESC provided 367 hearing evaluations.

The team routinely follows 80 students – and counting – who are enrolled in Trumbull County schools and diagnosed with hearing impairment.

Additionally, there are a number of students enrolled in the Champion Hearing Impaired program. The team uses different test methods based on a person's age and developmental abilities.

Has the equipment and ability to perform the same hearing screening babies get at birth; Can attempt a behavioral hearing test from about 6 months of age on up; Uses Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) to test children who are too young to consciously respond to a hearing test; Trains staff on using and maintaining equipment; Monitors/checks that equipment is functioning properly; Provides information for and attends ETR (three year re-evaluations) and IEP meetings for hearing impaired students; Provides advice and equipment troubleshooting to schools as needed.
