PROUDLY NEW ZEALAND OWNED & OPERATED

UPDATE FROM GAVIN

Welcome back everyone, while the weather didn’t exactly follow the script for the holiday season, I trust you all manged to at least recharge and spend some quality time with your families. 2022 was an incredibly busy year at TRT, client demand exceeded expectation so firstly I would like to thank our valued clients for their continued support of our products and services.

From January we welcome two changes to senior sales roles in capital goods, Glen Harnett has moved from trailer sales to General Manager of Capital Equipment and Justin Cox into the vacant NZ Crane Sales Manager role. Justin brings an experienced skill set in the knuckle boom and heavy crane sector. The addition of Justin in support of Glen will increase our delivery standards and add value to the high level of service that our clients expect.

As we look forward to 2023 demand remains strong for TRT products especially our capital equipment, the majority of our manufacturing capacity is sold for 2023 but there are a couple of slots towards the end of the year so if you require a trailer or crane, I would encourage you to contact Glen and his team ASAP.

In addition to the appointments in our capital equipment sales team we have moved the Zepro range of products from capital equipment into our parts portfolio. The move will bolster product support through the reach of TRT’s mobile parts territory managers. We have an extended range of Zepro products on the water, technical training for the group is underway and by March we will be set to support Zepro like never before.

In this month’s offering we have excellent deals in Jost top plates and Rockinger turn angle sensor kits. Exhaust products, brake calliper kits also feature and don’t forget to check out our technical article on filtration and lubrication as we reach higher ambient temperatures through summer.

To our staff and our clients, thank you again for your continued support through 2022 and we look forward to furthering our relationships in 2023.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

New year, new look - TRT Auckland branch finally gets its long overdue re-branding installed, together with new paint to freshen up the branch. TECH TALK: LUBRICATION AND FILTRATION

WHY IS THE LUBRICANT

SYSTEM

IMPORTANT IN AN ENGINE?

HOW DO WE KEEP THE OIL CLEAN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES? YOU ASK, THAT IS THE JOB OF THE FILTERS, OFTEN OVERLOOKED AND DISMISSED, BUT STILL A VITAL COMPONENT OF THE HEALTHY ENGINE SYSTEM.

They are a relatively simple component with very few or no moving parts. The common types of filters are the spin on version or the cartridge version and they will have some or all of these components.

At the heart is the engine its lifeblood is the oil, that ensures it runs smoothly and reliably. Protecting the internal components of the engine and helping it run efficiently, engine oil is nothing less than essential.

Oil is one of those crucial aspects of truck engine life. It keeps the engine running by reducing friction, removing heat from the engine, and carrying debris to the filters. Thus, it makes sense that the engine’s filtration system would be similarly important. The filter prevents dirt, carbon, and metal particles from doing damage to the engine. It’s an important job, which is why fleets need the best lubricants and filters for the job and need to stay current on emerging technology.

• TAPPING PLATE – top plate with the screw thread and a ring of holes around the outside

• ANTI-DRAIN BACK – a rubber flapper that prevents the oil from exiting on engine shutdown

• FILTER MEDIUM – paper like sheet in pleats folded within the end discs, traps particles down to a Micron rating the smaller the number the smaller the particle

• CENTRAL TUBE – provides support to the media and the direct path for the oil to exit to the engine

• RELIEF VALVE – pressure build up from dirty or thick oil will open this valve and allow the engine its lifeblood

• END DISCS – helps keep the medium stable and prevents oil from getting into the central tube

• RETAINER – spring or disc that keeps the end disks and medium tight on the tapping plate

OIL FILTERS: (see fig.1*)

For example - construction equipment that is running full throttle all day may consume additives or shear oil faster than an over-the-road driver cruising at half throttle all day.

THROUGHOUT RECENT DECADES, LUBRICANTS HAVE EVOLVED CONSIDERABLY TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES OF MODERN TRUCKS AND THEIR ENGINES.

Newer engines require lubricants that are more durable to help prevent wear as today’s engines run at higher temperatures, which can stress conventional lubricants. Relatively newer engine operations, such as stop/start technology can also mean additional burdens for an engine oil.

To address these challenges, the most recent oils offer greater resistance to oxidation as well as improved aeration control and shear stability. This provides modern engine technology with enhance protection, improved fuel economy as well as the potential to safely extend oil drain intervals.

Note: Extending drain intervals should always be undertaken in conjunction with regularly sending the oil out for analysis, which can tell you when it needs to be changed and provide early detection of bearing problems.

This not only ensures that equipment can be operational for longer between oil drains but also reduces scheduled maintenance costs –resulting in a direct and positive impact on the company’s bottom line.

The filters whatever size or shape they are all have the same process, the oil passes through the housing, between the filter case and the filter medium assembly either via holes in the filter or the main hosing itself, under pressure and then though the filtering medium (microscopic celluloses and/or synthetic fibres in most cases) where most of the contaminants get trapped and the cleaned oil heads through the main tube, on with its vital journey to protect the engine. If the filter becomes clogged through neglect or extremely dirty environment the Bypass valve opens and oil continues to flow keeping the engine moving, however the damaged caused could be expensive to fix.

BYPASS / SECONDARY FILTERS: (see fig.2*) These are a good way to keep oil consistently clean until the next oil change. A bypass filter is a unit that takes a slip stream of five to 10% of the oil flow and super cleans it down to around 1 micron. The benefit to finer filtration is the removal of particles less than 10 microns that cause wear. In tests, it has been found that a diesel oil that was due to be changed could be brought back to new condition within 300 miles of use. Extending drain intervals should always be monitored with regular oil analysis to confirm that wear metals are normal and that the oils detergent package is still at an acceptable level. The lab generally gives recommendations as part of the analysis service.

SYMPTOMS OF A FILTRATION SYSTEM IN TROUBLE

• Poor performance – sluggish or slow acceleration

• Sputtering – can’t maintain a constant speed may start slowly but worsen over time

• Metallic noises – metal parts breaking down and grinding on each other

• Low oil pressure – this can lead to irreversible engine damage

• Dirty exhaust smoke – black and smelly exhaust gas

Lubrication is a crucial element in the efficiency and life-expectancy of any rotating equipment. Lubrication reduces friction and allows moving machine parts to slide smoothly past each other.
Engine lubrication is an important aspect of the overall health of your engines and trucks. There aren’t very many differences between applications in terms of what oils are chosen initially, but the oil change interval can vary significantly depending on your application:

We carry an extensive range of oils and filters to suit various applications.
