Centralised recirculating filtration systems, also known as RAS (recirculating aquaculture systems) and LSS (life support systems), are designed to deliver optimal, stable water parameters in order to promote healthy livestock. The overall concept has been developed over many years, through constant research and practical application. The concept is based on systematically filtering the water using a series of mechanical, biological and chemical processes before delivering each individual livestock tank with an independent supply of clear, UV-treated water.
Apart from a high level of animal success, each of our systems will achieve excellent levels of cosmetic acceptance, coupled with a low labour requirement, and can be installed within a few hours. With the use of nitrifying bacteria cultures the biological filter matures faster and the system can be up to full capacity three times faster than normal (within 8-10 days depending on temperature and stocking levels)
System packages have been designed to be as flexible as possible with modifications and expansions tailored to your specific requirements and applications.

Depuration (purification) refers to the process whereby shellfish such as mussels and oysters are placed in specially designed filtration systems to reduce bacterial levels to below set thresholds prior to human consumption.
Our complete plug and play Small Scale Shallow Tank Depuration system has been designed according to the Seafish standard design, ensuring that strict operating guidelines are met.
We are also able to customise depuration systems to specific requirements, supplying pumps, flow meters and UV sterilisers, as well as protein skimmers and ozone generators to further enhance water quality. The YSIDO200 handheld meter is widely used for spot checking dissolved oxygen levels while the powerful Senect range is ideal for monitoring, logging and providing alarm notifications, as well as remote access via smart phone or tablet.
Our synthetic sea salt is a perfect option where clean seawater is not available, and we have a low bromine salt available for applications using ozone.
This unit is based on the Seafish standard design for a small-scale shallow tank depuration system and was designed for the purification and holding of molluscs, based on trials at a number of commercial purification centres around the UK

Biological filtration refers to filtration methods that utilise living organisms to neutralise or remove undesirable substances from a process liquid. It is the removal of waste metabolites that would otherwise accumulate from keeping, feeding and growing aquatic animals in a closed recirculating system. After oxygen, it is the accumulation of ammonia - the waste metabolite from protein digestion - that is probably the most limiting factor affecting the successful operation of closed recirculation systems. The removal of ammonia (NH₃) by oxidation to nitrite (NO₂) and finally nitrate (NO₃) is carried out primarily by the bacteria Nitrosomonas sp. and Nitrobacter sp. respectively. This process is called NITRIFICATION. Un-ionised ammonia and nitrite are both toxic to fish at relatively low concentrations whereas nitrate, the end product of nitrification, is relatively nontoxic at even relatively high concentrations. The rate of nitrification is proportional to temperature, proceeding particularly slowly below 10°C, and is optimal around 30°C. However, the metabolic rate of aquatic animals is also proportionately lower at reduced temperatures and it is perfectly feasible to consider recirculation at cooler temperatures.
The particular size and type of filtration equipment for a given application will depend on a number of factors including, but not limited to, the type of livestock being held, the total stocking density, the amount of food that is added to the system and the temperature of the water. Please contact us if you would like to discuss your requirements in more detail, or complete our online enquiry form, and a member of our team will be in touch.
Fluid Sand Towers (FSTs) utilise the most efficient method of aerobic biological filtration available and thereby occupy a very small footprint

Biosystems FSTs fluidise uniformly and quickly due to a specially designed sand diffuser bowl, used in conjunction with the carefully graded filter media.
Includes a unique anti-siphon device which guarantees that in the event of a power/ flow interruption, no media will back-siphon into the supply pipework.
Lower section manufactured from impact resistant Polypropylene, and the top section from clear acrylic to enable easy determination of the operating run level.
All units come complete with supply pipe work, oolitic sand, replaceable sand diffuser bowl and top-flow sight glass.
It is advisable to discharge the outlet flow from the FST into a Re-Gas/ Bio-Tower.
Biosystems Fluid Sand Filters incorporate a unique anti-siphon device which guarantees that in the event of a power/flow interruption, no media will back-siphon into the supply pipework.
If this were to occur, the Fluid Sand Filter would have to be completely stripped down and re-commissioned, usually resulting in the sand’s biofilm becoming unviable
Biosystems Fluidised Sand Bed Filters are designed to operate with 50-100% expansion of the sand bed (approx. 75% of the total filter column height). Flow rates specified are designed to be a maximum of 180m3/hr per m2 of cross-sectional filter area.
The maximum livestock mass of the Biosystems Fluid Sand Towers has been calculated based on a feed rate of 3% body weight per day, feed with a protein content of 50% and at warm water temperatures. Most commercial facilities operate at high stocking densities and want to achieve high growth rates, resulting in an increased demand on the bio-filtration. To compensate for this, the maximum livestock mass has been reduced.
Re-Gas/Bio-Towers are versatile trickle filters used for both re-gassing and biological applications

Gravity flow filter, with water entering the unit through the top via a specially designed rota flow injector (smaller units) or rotating spray bar assembly (larger units).
Utilises 1” Bio-media manufactured from virgin polypropylene, with a surface area of 210m2/m3.
Primary function to reoxygenate water and remove super-saturated gases simultaneously.
Suitable for effective biological filtration.
Constructed from impact resistant Polypropylene.
All materials used in the production of TMC’s Re-gas/Biotowers are from virgin nontoxic plastics. It is critical that any products used in the construction of Re-gas/Bio-towers are nontoxic. Aside from the fact that they need to sustain populations of aerobic bacteria, the high surface areas associated with these filters means that there will be significant leaching of any toxic substances should they be present. Please refer to the pricing tables for the construction materials of each of the units.
All units utilise our Bio-Rings with an approximate surface area of 210m2/m3, and a biological capacity of a minimum of 140g of TAN processed per m3 of media per 24 hours. Flow rates specified are designed to be 30m3/hr per m2 of crosssectional filter area.
Protein skimming, or foam fractionation, is the process by which dissolved and particulate organic carbons are removed from a liquid, in this case the fish culture water, by adsorbing them onto the surface of fine bubbles rising in a closed contact column against a counter current water flow. The bubbles burst and form stable foam at the top of the water column and the accumulated organic wastes are discharged from the column along with the foam produced. The removed substances are called “surfactants” because they are surface active or “charged”.
Bubble size is a critical factor within the control of the design of the protein skimmer. An efficient air diffuser or venturi plays an important part in generating a swarm of bubbles that are as small as possible, ensuring maximum surface area for adsorption of the organic compounds. Smaller bubbles also rise more slowly, allowing more contact time with the process water.
Generally, it is difficult to generate a small enough bubble size in freshwater to achieve effective foam production (except in cases of very high organic loading) and therefore protein skimming is principally recommended for seawater or brackish applications where the salinity is greater than 16 ppt. However, several freshwater skimmers are available for use in ponds. Protein skimming is further enhanced by the application of ozone into the air mixture, which further oxidises and breaks down complex organic compounds as well as providing a degree of disinfection, depending on the quantity used. For further information on ozone. Please don't hesitate to contact us.

A UV steriliser is a device that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms in the water, such as algae, bacteria, viruses, and parasites. It works by exposing the water to UV-C light, which damages the DNA or RNA of the microorganisms, rendering them unable to reproduce and causing them to die off.
The effectiveness of a UV steriliser depends on the contact time between the water and the UV light. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the optimal flow rate, and ensure your pump or filtration system can maintain this flow. Too fast a flow rate may not allow sufficient exposure time, while too slow a flow can reduce overall water circulation.
UV sterilisers are a powerful tool for maintaining a healthy and clear aquarium. By choosing the right unit, installing it properly, and maintaining it regularly, you can significantly improve water quality, reduce disease outbreaks, and create a healthier environment for your livestock. While not a cureall, UV sterilisers are an excellent addition to a comprehensive aquarium management strategy.
Ultraviolet is a term used to describe the wavelength between the blue violet range of the visible spectrum and the shorter wavelength or X-rays.
The ultraviolet spectrum is divided into three separate bands: (1) UVa from 315nm to 400nm (2) UVb from 280nm to 315nm (3) UVc from 200nm to 280nm
UVc is often referred to as the germicidal wavelength, because of its ability to destroy micro-organisms. The lamps in all our UV sterilisers emit a wide range of ultraviolet with its most significant part at a wavelength of 253.7nm, which has been found to be the most efficient for germicidal action.
When water is passed through a UV steriliser, micro-organisms contained in the water encounter UVc radiation emitted from the germicidal lamp. The UVc radiation penetrates the cell membrane and thereby either destroys or debilitates the microorganism.
Different micro-organisms vary in their susceptibility to UVc radiation.
The most sensitive, and hence the easiest treated, are some bacteria and most phototrophic organisms such as those often found in ponds and aquaria. Bacteria, such as Escherichia coli which can contaminate drinking water supplies, are easily controlled by relatively low levels of UVc and therefore low level UVc radiation has been employed by the drinking water industry for many years.
The most resistant micro-organisms to UVc are protozoans which may, when compared to simple bacteria, require several hundred times the radiation dose to destroy them.
Generally, the larger the organism, the larger the UV dose required to damage it. There are many hazardous and pathogenic aquatic organisms that can be controlled given the correct UVc radiation dose.
Correct application will dramatically reduce the likely spread of most primary infections such as Oodinium sp. and Cryptocaryon sp., at the same time almost eliminating the risk of secondary bacterial infection which is so often the real cause of fish loss. This is achieved by controlling potential populations of heterotrophic bacteria which are often associated with an unhealthy aquatic environment.
It is important that the UV lamp reaches its optimum operating temperature of 40°C otherwise the lamp will not generate the maximum amount of UVc radiation possible, and the efficiency of the unit will be compromised.
For this reason, all UV water sterilisers must be fitted with a protective fused quartz glass sleeve, which keeps the UV lamp from direct water contact, which would otherwise act as a coolant. Units should also feature sealed end caps which help to maintain the lamp and the air around it at its constant optimum running temperature.
The protective sleeve employed must be manufactured from fused quartz glass, which allows the highest possible amount of UV light to penetrate the water.
Other materials should not be used as they can have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the steriliser by significantly reducing the amount of UVc that reaches the water.
Dirty or turbid water with suspended particles will absorb the UVc radiation and dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the unit. It is important to ensure that the UV steriliser is placed at the end of the filter circuit, before the water returns to the holding tanks to ensure that the water passing through the steriliser is as clear as possible.
Dissolved organic compounds also reduce the distance of penetration of the UVc radiation. Typically, in any aquatic environment with fish or other animals present, there is a gradual build up of phenolic compounds and other organic dyes. This build up of organic dyes is often referred to as ‘yellow water syndrome’ and can be dramatically reduced by filtering through a good quality activated carbon (e.g. HR Carbon) or by using ozone gas.

Reverse osmosis (RO) systems play a crucial role in maintaining water quality in aquariums.
RO systems are designed to remove impurities, contaminants, and minerals from tap water. They use a semi-permeable membrane to allow only water molecules to pass through, resulting in purified water. This is particularly important for aquariums, where tap water may contain substances harmful to aquatic life.
Understanding the specific needs of your aquatic environment and properly managing RO water will contribute to the overall health and well-being of your aquarium inhabitants.

Auto Top Up (ATO) systems are devices designed to automatically maintain the water level in an aquarium by replenishing water that has evaporated. These systems offer several benefits in maintaining a stable and healthy aquatic environment.
Evaporation is a natural process in aquariums, and without intervention, it can lead to fluctuations in water levels. ATO systems help counteract these fluctuations by automatically adding freshwater to the tank as needed.
In marine aquariums, as freshwater evaporates, the salinity of the remaining water increases. ATO systems add freshwater to compensate for this evaporation, preventing significant changes in salinity levels.
Manual topping up of aquariums can be time-consuming and may be neglected, leading to fluctuations in water parameters.
ATO systems automate this process, saving the aquarist time and ensuring that water levels are consistently maintained.
