Lalita’s

Lalita’s Passion Love for for Timeless Eco-friendly Interiors Interiors Personal st yle is a phenomenon that gradually evolves throughout a person’s life. Whether haute couture or interior design, fashionistas enjoy chasing the latest trends of today, but may seek more classic and traditional staples tomorrow. As an award-winning actress and design graduate, Lalita Sasiprapha (Mew), has always been at the forefront of fashion and design. Currently building a home in Thailand’s royal resort town, Mew and her childhood friend Paveena McLean sit down with Tropical Living to discuss décor, furniture and how living eco-friendly can fit into anyone’s interior st yle evolution. 12

14

A

s the daughter of veteran actress

Jaruwan Panyopas, Mew has

inherited the talent, poise and

beauty of her mother, so it was

no surprise when she started her

own successful acting career in 1981. Thai audiences will remember Mew for her breaking role in Prisna in 1987, since then devoted fans have followed her progress from a teenage idol, to an established award winning actress. Now happily married to Narubodee and with two young boys, Mew embarks on her latest home construction project along the shores of Hua Hin, where she reflects on how her taste and choices in design and décor have developed alongside changes and events in her life. Before marrying and having children, Mew shares that she typically went for the trendiest, coolest and most flashy concepts. Fast-forwarding to today, she prefers to decorate her living spaces with practical and timeless pieces. “I really like old wooden furnishings as they are warm and tell a story. I appreciate the history behind old wood and antiques,” she explains. The actress’s love for more traditional furnishings is displayed as she mixes and matches modern and classic pieces throughout her home.

15

Mew shares her appreciation for the past lives of recycled wood products with her childhood friend Paveena McLean (Bib). Friends since the age of 10, Bib turned her passion for reclaimed wood into furniture brand Absolutely Fabulous. Situated in the heart of Bangkok’s financial district just seconds away from the bustling Sathorn Road, Absolutely Fabulous is a bastion of home décor specialising in elegant furnishings made from reclaimed teak wood.

Recycle and Reclaim The actress often looks for furniture made from old or recycled wood, “its an environmentally friendly way to shop and can be fun seeking out second hand items to decorate my home.” Which Mew does with pieces hailing from everywhere including old houses and floors in Ayutthaya, to local creations and bargains from Chatuchak Weekend Market. Bib explains that you don’t have to sacrifice style for environmental awareness. “Absolutely Fabulous is a perfect match for anyone with an eco-friendly style

16

vision as all of the brand’s furniture is old teak,” she tells us. Wood for the products comes from a variety of sources including old furniture, houses, floors, and walls. As the store’s owner describes her love and admiration for reclaimed wood, she tells us that, “It has a lot of meaning, history and it is beautiful.” Because of the natural scars, marks and grooves from the recycled teak, each piece of furniture has its own characteristics and identity. When customers make a purchase, they are definitely buying a unique and one of a kind piece. Bib believes the beauty in the imperfection of re-used wood is very similar to that of humans. “You must first appreciate the natural beauty within and then you must love wood,” she continues.

17

18

As for Mew’s interior design inspirations and influences, it depends largely on her atmosphere and environment. While she is currently building a new home on the beach, classic wooden pieces complement the natural surroundings. She has always chosen pieces that fit perfectly with the personality of her home, tastefully blending old with new. Her childhood friend believes no matter where you’ve chosen to call home, wood is timeless and works well with almost any setting. “It doesn’t matter if you live in a busy metropolis or the quiet countryside, both nature lovers and city dwellers can find signature pieces at Absolutely Fabulous. Most pieces are warm and relate well to almost any environment,” says Bib. According to the brand’s owner, walking into Absolutely Fabulous and feeling as though you are walking into a home is a key concept. “Customers are allowed to sit and even lie down on the beds to decide if they like them or not. We want everyone to feel relaxed upon entering and to fully imagine certain pieces fitting perfectly in their homes.”

19

Design Fusion Absolutely Fabulous has two signature lines; the Classic Line signified by dark colour wood; and the Grey Line with more natural hues. All furniture lines are precision machine cut and assembled by hand by experienced craftsmen. With an Englishman and Italian native based in Indonesia as its designers, the furniture has both European and Asian influences. Customers are offered the best of both worlds, as an authentic Eurasian look shines through in the final products. The brand’s popularity with celebrities and the country’s expatriate community can be credited to its outstanding customer service. Upon walking into the store, customers are asked if they want immediate help or if they prefer to browse. The objective is to allow everyone to move throughout the showroom comfortably, free to explore the three floors of signature furniture. Visitors are encouraged to look thoroughly at the products before making a decision. “This is part of our concept. You walk in, you feel comfortable, you feel relaxed and if you need us, we are here to help,” says the owner. Because giving the best products with the best service is crucial, all pieces are quality checked from the loading docks and undergo additional showroom inspections. Potential buyers are welcome to come into the store as many times as they want before making a firm decision on not just a piece of furniture, but a life long home investment. From the time

20

of purchase to delivery, to even if the customer moves away, the company provide the highest standards of after-sales service. Bib explains, “Recently a customer relocated, unfortunately the removal company dropped his dining room table. He simply called the store, explained the situation and took photos of the problem. He later received a touch up kit, which provided advice on how to fix the damage and what to use — all free of charge.”

Giving Back to Nature As our conversation with Mew draws to a close, she emphasises the importance of shopping with environmental consciousness and how proud she is of her friend for creating a product that combines their shared passions. “Its great that Bib has made it easy for shoppers to buy items made from recycled wood for their home, and that she also contributes to help plant more trees, in essence replacing old with new” explains Mew. As with any precious natural resource, reclaimed teak’s recent spike in popularity has resulted in a huge decrease in supplies. For this reason, the company participates in the Trees for Trees initiative. Created by the Indonesian Government, the store pays a certain percentage on each shipment of products to the initiative, allowing the organisation to plant more trees. Absolutely Fabulous affixes all of its products with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Logo. This trademark stamp certifies that the brand complies with the highest social and environmental standards on the market.

21

22

After three successful years of providing high-quality home furnishings, Bib admits that even Absolutely Fabulous’ style vision has evolved and changed since its opening. The brand is expanding its collection and adding a third line called the Metal Line. Designed by a Dutchman residing in Indonesia, this latest concept also fuses Asian and European influences with shiny metal and natural coloured teak to create an elevated contemporary look. The store’s fourth floor will open June 2010 and will house this new cutting edge addition. “The new Metal Line from Absolutely Fabulous is younger, a bit more masculine and very metropolitan,” Bib adds. For more information visit the Absolutely Fabulous showroom: 142/40-41 Sathorn Soi 12, North Sathorn Road, Silom, Bangkok Telephone: +66 (0) 2635 2040 www.absolutelyfabulousthailand.com

Celebrities Choice The manufacturer of Absolutely Fabulous has celebrity fans across the globe, including Hollywood actors and royalty, here are just a few that have graced their home with the fine furniture: Sharon Stone Janet Jackson Donny Osmond Ozzie Osbourne Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell Oprah Winfrey Pierce Brosnan Bruce Willis Gary Sinise John Cusack LeeAnn Rimes Arnold Schwarzenegger Liz Hurley Alan Rickman Dennis Quaid Anastacia Angelina Jolie The Edge (lead guitar, U2) Prime Minister of New Zealand Tim Henman (UK #1 tennis player) HRH King Abdullah of Jordan

Supply Surges

he resort island of Koh Samui is experiencing growing pains as hotel supply hits 16,069 rooms, according to the Samui Hotel Market Update, an extensive research project into the market undertaken by leading Thailand consulting firm C9 Hotelworks. The company’s managing director, Bill Barnett, said the prevailing challenge for the destination was a distinct lack of direct international flights, with domestic flight traffic representing 91% of all air traffic to the island during 2009. During the first six months of 2009, overall arrivals to Koh Samui slumped 23%, attributed mainly to political concerns. A strong second half upswing in occupancy fell short of clawing back the shortfall. Emerging growth markets were Eastern Europe, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and the Middle East.

Values on the Rise

eal estate company Binswanger Brooker (Thailand), has released its latest findings into land prices in central Bangkok, revealing that values have escalated for prime plots in the central Ploenchit area of the city to now exceed the heady levels of 2008, despite the local political uncertainty. Research indicates land prices have risen by 88% since 2007 as listed developers such as Sansiri, Raimon Land and the Central Group invest heavily to secure prime plots for future development and major local investors look to diversify from their core businesses.

The prize giving ceremony recently took place at the Swissotel Le Concorde, Bangkok, where Pakhin Aunggulsant, managing director of the AEP Group, received the plaque. The BCI Green Award was launched in 2009 by the BCI Group of Companies to seek out innovative and environmentally responsible architecture that has been designed, built and commissioned in Asia.

A plot a little under three rai (1,105.7 sq wah) next to Wave Place on Wireless Road was bought by Thai Summit Grand Estate for THB 1.2 million sq wah, who are understood to be planning to build a hotel on the site. Also in March, the purchase by Sansiri of a two rai plot adjacent to the American ambassador’s residence on Wireless Road for THB 1.5 million sq wah set a new record for land prices in Thailand, confirming that CBD sites are rapidly growing in value due to their scarcity - and no where is this more apparent than in the Ploenchit precinct. Binswanger Brooker (Thailand) chief executive officer, Nigel Cornick, said that a limited supply of freehold land combined with high demand for central locations was driving prices up, even during the current political impasse.

INDUSTRY INSIDERS

Nine Years of Thai Property

Today’s property market is a very different place to what it was nine years ago when Tropical Living magazine began publishing. It has faced some very high times and also lows, and managed to bounce back from a number of challenges, including a major natural disaster and political coup. Despite the ups and downs, the Thai market has so far proved to be robust, as the country’s unmistakable charms draw investors each year. To get an overview of the past nine years and more, we contacted five leading industry insiders to share with us their views of the property markets of Phuket, Koh Samui and Bangkok.

located between two of the biggest growing markets, so dependency on the expat European market will drop as the other Asian countries become interested.”

What have you learnt from the financial crisis, what will you do differently in the future? AL: “Marketing starts with the product, and if the product is good, people will come. Staying small helps as it mitigates the risk of a financial crisis hitting half way through the development. If we do another Trisara, it would be a similar concept, as we have enjoyed tremendous success and now that all the building is over, the fun starts in refining services, focusing on sales and marketing and of course keeping the place looking like new!”

BA: “We were ahead of the game before the financial crisis and if we became nervous about a development we wouldn’t sell it. Hopefully other agents will be more cautious. I believe if agents wants to be viewed as contributing a worth while value to the property market, then they should bear some responsibility for the transaction. As there are fewer clients around and deals are more cautious, I would hope that the market would vet their projects more carefully than they used to.”

BA: “There are plenty of opportunities on the horizon with new buyers from China and India and finance is yet to come here. The market will be flat for a while due to the current political situation, but when we come out the other end, Thailand will be in a good position. We may well see another 6 to 18 months where agents close and some developments will be taken over, but in five years time, the long term view is excellent.”

What have been some of the notable launches and events in the market? JB: “We are all aware of the projects which ran into difficulties and it was only when Dhevatara Properties came to Koh Samui in 2007 that we saw for the first time in about 10 years a truly professional development company. Another successful project was the Villas at Napasai (Orient Express) and The Residences at The Four Seasons Resort. Now we have the villas at The Conrad and also at the W Resort. Clearly these projects are developed by well funded developers, where in most other cases the progress of the development is dictated to by the success of the sales, usually off plan.”

How did the global recession affect Koh Samui’s property market?

What type of buyers had the most spending power? PK: “During 2000 to 2005, Thai people were the main target group of condominium buyers. A number of foreigners bought also, as the high end developers main target was foreigners who both work in Bangkok and travel around the region, and want to have a permanent living place in the city. However, under the condominium law, Thais have to purchase not less than 51% of total space in the condo building. Most Expensive Condo’s The Bangkok condominium market has proved to be robust in recent years despite the global financial crisis, bird flu panic and internal political woes. Local buyers still flock to new project launches and take advantage of early buyer discounts, while prime land plots are being snapped up for increasing amounts for development of super luxury apartments, offices and hotels. The city sky line is continually changing as projects get taller, grander and spread out further across the city’s transport network.

W

ith frequent new condo launches and world renowned brands taking their place on the city streets, we thought it would be interesting to see which condominium units are fetching the highest prices. In cooperation with CBRE, we contacted 16 condominium developers and compiled a Top 9 list to

coincide with Tropical Living’s 9 year anniversary. To make a fair comparison we judged the projects on the price per sq m for their most expensive unit on the market. We do not claim this list is exhaustive, but simply shows an example of the prices that are currently being sought in today’s market.

Buyers are always going to be more willing to purchase a completed unit, than one which is still in the development phase, and now that construction work is finished, Ratthanon is expecting to see a rapid increase in sales.

Trade-fair visitors expect brand ranges and new products to be presented in elaborate, perfectly designed settings. But Gaggenau has gone a step further and showcased special insights into the heart of their products, the production part. With a bold booth design that stands well apart from the ordinary, the factory setting displays the company’s new products presented amidst machinery, packaging materials and pallets.

Il Piccolo presented the second collection of Nodus, a project that brings together, in a single rug, the most ancient traditions of rug knotting and the ideas and visions of the most daring contemporary designers. The limited edition launches of Nodus 2010 include the Circus, the rug of the Brasilian Campana brothers, available in only 10 pieces, signed and numbered, like every piece of art.

LIVING DINING

STORY : Nadia Wilan IMAGES : Courtesy of Tepandine PHOTOGRAPHER : Chavalit Kamolthammanon

Reinventing the Meal With leisure time being the latest must-have commodity, the high value placed on together time with family and friends means a greater demand for unique and fun shared experiences. A new cooking and dining product range launched in Asia delivers just that, and is already creating a lot of heat, and not just in the kitchen.

89

U

sing patented technology, Tepandine products are revolutionising the way we

cook and dine. Their innovative product range not only looks sleek and modern, but they can be used in the kitchen, dining room, terrace or even onboard a yacht, creating great new options for entertaining. The Tepandine tables consists of a top quality, silk brushed, stainless steel plate, that when heated, magically expands in the centre to create a dip. In less than three minutes, what was once a flat preparation area transforms into a hot, shallow dipped cooking centre, surrounded by a food warming area and then a completely cold defined dining area. The contemporary stainless steel tables come in a variety of sizes, seating anything from two to ten people.

90

When cooking, the sauces and juices are cleverly retained in the shallow dip that is created providing a defined searing grill for ultimate versatility in the types of dishes that can be created. From east to west, a variety of cooking styles and recipes can be rustled up. By simply connecting the table to an electric supply, any cook can become a master chef in their own home, or indeed outside of it.

Innovative Home Dining In addition to the ultra-hip dining table, where the cooking and eating area seamlessly blend, the Tepandine built-in kitchen cook top units can also be fitted into any table or kitchen counter top surface including marble, glass, granite and wood.

91

1 2 3 The complete Tepandine range also includes; bistro tables, the equivalent of a cocktail bar of hot appetizers; the portable table range, that cooks enough for a gathering both indoors and out; and marine versions, which mean minimal fuss and mess onboard and reduces the need for storing a medley of pots and pans.

Living Taste

Nine boat dealers reveal their best selling yachts in Asia.

We meet an Italian winemaker to discuss family, work and his love for Thailand.

LIVING PLEASURE

Nine Popular

Yachts in Asia Asian waters are perfect for cruising around to see the beautiful islands and beaches the region has to offer. The mesmerising islets of Thailand’s Phang-nga Bay and the natural escape from city life around the coastlines of Hong Kong and Singapore all have their appeal. It is easy to understand why the demand for boating is on the increase. With many worldwide brand yachts now selling in Asia, we wanted to find out which models are selling the most. For Tropical Living’s ninth birthday we asked nine yacht brokers / manufacturers to tell us a little about their best selling model for a particular brand, to find out what the Asian market prefers.

98

Azimut 53 “The new Azimut 53, launched at the Genoa Boat Show in Italy last October is showing signs of becoming the new best selling Azimut for the Southern China market. This 54’ yacht fills the main niche of the market for a single crew boat that serves Mark Woodmansey, yacht broker, Simpson Marine

well as a family boat and is suitable for entertaining business guests. The distinctive style, quality of production and reputation of the Azimut ship yard is continued with this new launch and the boat slots nicely into the range between the 47 and 58 models. “The large flybridge has the benefit of an optional hard top providing shade for the dining area and two sunpads, unique for this category of yacht. A large C shaped sofa in the aft cockpit provides additional outdoor dining and the hydraulic swim platform allows a tender or jet ski of up to 450kg to be easily lowered into the water. The helm seat electrically converts to increase the inside dining table to easily accommodate six adults for dinner or a business meeting. A full beam master bedroom with high ceilings and plenty of natural light makes overnighting on the boat very comfortable. With a competitive price and extensive list of optional features and fabrics choices, the boat can be easily customised by the prospective owner on Azimut’s state of the art 3D configurator. This allows the options and fabric samples to be displayed in real-time 3D before the boat is ordered - you can even see how the boat looks with the selection of hull colours available from the shipyards paint shop. “Simpson Marine then take care of the delivery to Hong Kong, commissioning and all aspects of owning the yacht in Hong Kong so that all your crew, maintenance and insurance issues are dealt with and you can enjoy your time on the water with family and friends.”

99

Baia 100 Baia 100

“The most popular Baia models are the 70’ and 100’, both of which we have recently sold to Hong Kong. These models are the latest, state of the art, most innovative designs from Baia, this is the primary reason why they are selling so well. The 70’ was launched in September 2007 and has a new look which is distinct from the earlier models with wow factors like the Plexiglass retractable cockpit bulkhead and futuristic styling, its not your average sportscruiser. The 100’ followed a year later and its the yard’s first to exceed over 100 foot.

Paul Vockler, sales manager, Starship Yachts

BAIA Italia 70

“As well as the unique design, they are extremely high performance using Arneson surface drives as standard with maximum speeds in excess of 50 knots, in fact Baia are pioneers in the use of surface drive technology on pleasure craft and the industry standard today. “Baia style is very different to other yachts you will see in Asian waters, they are most suited to those who want to make an impression and stand out from the crowd, for example in Hong Kong there are many identical production yachts lined up one after the other at the marinas, Baia’s are made for individuals, when you own a Baia people take notice. Baia sold eight units of the Italia 70’ in the past year and four units of the 100’ over the last 18 months. The open yacht range is from 43ft to 100ft.”

“Chris-Craft are an American boat-builder who have been producing some of the finest runabouts, launches and express cruisers since 1874. The Corsair 28 is our mid-range boat and a favourite amongst our clients here at Chris-Craft Thailand. “Ask most boats owner’s and they’ll tell you owning a boat is as much about enjoying the life aquatic as it is spending quality time entertaining friends and family. The Corsair 28 is in a class

of her own here boasting some excellent features including full length bimini protection, large cockpit refrigerator and an erectable table that will seat up to six guests with room to spare. The forward cabin has a double berth and also contains a head compartment for the inevitable! “The fact she is a very fast boat capable of 50 mph plus is something our customers really appreciate, however above all, in terms of design and handling characteristics she is one of the safest in her class. This is largely due to her classic lines incorporating deep-v hull, flared bow and a reverse transom

Joshua Lee, managing director, Lee Marine International Marine Brokerage

that give her unrivalled sea-keeping qualities.”

Pershing 80 “Lee Marine’s top boat is the Pershing 80’. The reason can be summarised in two words: speed and comfort. In fact it is the speed that differentiates the Pershing 80’ from all others. Most boats in the luxury range have the comfort but not the speed of a Pershing 80’, which combines both in a unique and satisfying package. Also, many Asian destinations are a long way from safe port so the speed allows owners many more alternatives to explore the region. The design and Italian flair, coupled with Lee Marine’s service, make it our top boat. “There is one other important element: Lee Marine and Pershing are not just business partners but we are good friends, a relationship built on mutual respect and trust over many years. We believe that in the future boats in Asia will be bigger with more tropical specification options and increased range.”

Windy 58 Zephros “Our top selling Windy Boats model is Windy’s 58 Zephyros. Recently, we have a lot of interest and enquiries for the Windy 58. This is because she has a perfect balance of luxurious fit and finish and beautiful design. Also she is the epitome of elegance

high levels of comfort, low levels of noise and economical running. Windy 58 has capabilities and performance typically only found in smaller sports cruisers. Moreover, the new-generation deep-v hull is perfectly matched with lively, hard working engines from Volvo Penta combining high quality, comfort and luxury, Windy 58 is one of our most popular models. “Windy Boats Thailand based in Phuket, is the sole distributor in Southeast Asia of the Norweigan brand. We offer a range of options for the genuine boating enthusiast, including the Windy family of 25ft to 58ft luxury cruisers and Windy Ocean craft powerboats. The Windy 58’s Zephyros is available to view at Phuket Boat Lagoon Marina. Please visit our office and experience yourself the luxury Windy Boats!”

The yacht is perfect for the Asian market as it has lots of space for day charters, on board corporate events and at the same time can perform further cruising to Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Australia, etc.”

SunCat 23 “The new SunCat 23 is proving to be a very popular model for Horizon Yachts. This solar electric catamaran made its debut at the recent Boat Asia 2010 as a 100% pollution-free vessel. We have succeeded in combining leisure and green cruising with this new model and proved it by inviting guests at the event to

experience its eco-friendly cruises for themselves. “Consequently, we managed to confirm sales of two units of the SunCat 23 and bookings for another two units of its bigger sister- the SunCat 46, due to arrive later this year. The SunCat 23 is powered by a 2.8kw electric outboard motor capable of running at 6 knots with 12 people aboard. The storage batteries are sufficient to last for a day trip even without a charge from the sun. “In addition to the technology of using solar power and an electric motor, this green boat has also been outfitted with a hull that optimises cruising ability with very limited power. Combining green power and a high efficiency hull creates a truly green boat.”

Hakan Lange, managing director and owner of Derani Yachts

Fairline Squadron 65 “Derani Yachts have just recently become a Fairline dealer in Thailand and yet we have sold two boats in this short time, with more sales currently being negotiated. Fairline Boats have been in the leisure boats business for 46 years and is today recognised by many as the top quality boat builder in UK and internationally. They launch new exciting designs on a regular basis and frequently win awards. Few builders dedicate the level of funds and resources to research and development as Fairline Boats does, hence being one of the market leaders in their field. “Fairline have two ranges, the highly acclaimed Squadron range of luxury flybridge boats (41-78 foot) and the Targa range (38-64 foot) which is more of a sports design. The Squadron 65 breathes luxury and quality with excellent performance and we believe this model will be a winner in Thailand. It has already won awards in the UK after being launched in May 2009. It has a few surprises such as an amazing VIP cabin that is the equal of the 65’s full-beam master cabin; there is unprecedented use of large glass windows in the crew cabin, which transforms the space into a genuine fourth cabin; and the flybridge feels like it’s been stolen from a 70-footer! The boat also exhibits Fairline’s usual attention to no-expense-spared detailing, and is packed with luxurious home-from-home comforts, designed to make living aboard a genuine pleasure. “The Fairline dealer network is considered one of the strongest in the world and this is subsequently helping re-sale value as well as brand image. Derani Yachts are very excited about the future of this dealership as there are plenty of new products lined up on the drawing board that surely will attract boaters in Asia. Selling a boat is the easy part but maintaining good customer relations is a challenge that we take very seriously and we have been privileged to have many repeat customer. Our dedicated service department is doing an excellent job in keeping all our customers boats in top condition and we look forward to the arrival of the new Fairlines to pride the waters of Phuket.”

LIVING TASTE STORY : James Barnes IMAGES : Courtesy of Gianni Gagliardo

The Taste of Good Living Gianni Gagliardo, oenologist extraordinaire, lives in the gently rolling hills of Serra dei Turchi, Piedmont, north eastern Italy. His story is as rich as the fabulous wines he produces, with his three sons integral to the success of a business that has thrived under the leadership of this self taught, self made man. His independent spirit and creative nature is self evident but for all the innovations he has brought to his industry, his respect for tradition and his humble origins are never far away.

G

ianni describes himself as, “A country boy,” who immersed himself in the wonderful world of

wine at the tender age of 22. “I was fascinated by the history of the Barolo wine and that small band of producers who were focussed on excellence. I realised that viticulture was an infinite pursuit of perfection, so I would never be bored!” This was at a time when Italian wine had slipped from the top table and Gianni determined that it was time to save the reputation and the fortunes of the area and to enhance his own prospects. His undoubted tenacity has paid off as the region enjoys a renaissance and companies like Ferrari, oil the big wheels at important press launches with his wines. And he never loses sight of the magic journey that, “begins with the peasant tending an ancient vine in the field and ends in a sparkling crystal glass, surrounded by elegance and comfort.” Gianni married the daughter of fourth generation vine grower Paolo Colla and it did not take long for him to establish himself in the winery while Paolo tended the vines. 1986 was a momentous year which saw Gianni become sole proprietor of the company and the birth of his third son Paolo. He took the difficult decision to change the business name to Gianni Gagliardo from Paolo Colla, choosing to look to the future when his sons would continue with the family tradition.

106

107

The new name coincided with a decision to change the style of the wines and the old cellar casks were replaced by smaller, French barrels. This brought about the introduction of the excellent Batie and Barolo Preve wines. The estate covers an impressive 30 hectares (74 acres) located in the Langhe villages of La Morra, Barolo, Monforte, Serralunga and Montecello d’Alba. The grapes grown on each single vineyard, whatever the size, are vinified separately with blending taking place afterwards. The tonneaux have been joined in the cellar by barriques as well as some of the surviving traditional large casks.

108

The Secret of Success Gianni sums up the secret of his success with a glint in his eye and just one word, “Passion!” He spends his day divided between the wine cellars and the sellers of his wine, all over the world but at every opportunity, he has lunch with his three sons, quaffing the liquid fruits of their labours and steering their business to new heights. Stefano was born in 1974, he grew up in the winery, breathing in the pungent aromas of fermenting grapes and his passion for wine began early, so his choice to become an oenologist was a natural consequence. Gianni, generously says, “Stefano discovered an aptitude for marketing and this,

combined with his wine knowledge, makes him the driving force of the business.” Alberto was born in 1978 and is a lover of the natural environment. His world is the vineyard. “In the last few years, he has achieved great balance in our vineyards and the outstanding results are being bottled right now,” says the proud father. Paolo has just graduated from Turin University where he studied agronomy and is currently gaining some commercial experience in the winery. His future is mapped out beyond the borders of Italy. The family are clearly important to Gianni who sees it as a consolidating factor in the business, able to share, “our joys and problems.” These values are rare but paramount to the cohesion found at the Gianni Gagliardo winery. Gianni’s life is spent with journalists, buyers, workers on his estate and his family. “We live above the cellars and we have also built a restaurant so when we are not tasting our competitors’ wines for comparison, our evenings are always dedicated to our wines and cooking.” The weekends see him indulging his love of the ocean on the French Riviera and in Monte Carlo.

109

110

It is great news for any lover of fine wine that the whole Gagliardo clan are, in Gianni’s words, “Crazy about Nebbiolo grapes.” This esteemed variety has been overlooked by those obsessed with Gallic mores but the Barolo and Barberesco wines are testament to their high quality finish, complexity and sophistication. “It is the best Italian vine, the most noble, but only here in Langhe can its character be best expressed. The taste changes a lot from hill to hill even if they are very near to each other, because there are many differences in the soil- from sandy to clay. That variety of expression gives us the possibility to produce many different wines, not only the Barolo, with the Nebbiolo grapes. It’s our speciality,” he enthuses.

Gagliardo Grape Guide Favorita grape: the name comes from the ancient preference of farmers for table wines since 1700. Their traditional method of winemaking was rediscovered and redeveloped by Gianni Gagliardo in the mid 1970’s. The Favorita variety produces fine Fallegro wine of pale yellow colour, a fragrant, fruity, floral flavour with a characteristic taste of acacia flowers, a pleasant hint of green apple, dry, full and soft acidity. Crisp and chilled, an ideal match with fresh fish, or as aperitif. Nebbiolo grape: its name comes from the late ripening period, the first harvest in the autumn fog. Nebbiolo-based wines reach the maximum aromatic complexity and express a fullness of flavour that balances the relatively high acidity and substantial tannins. The wines from the Langhe Nebbiolo and Nebbiolo d’Alba areas are less intense and long-lived than big and varied ones from individual vineyards of Barolo and

wines but I love the sun and the sea. I have travelled all over the world, Piedmont and Phuket are the most fabulous places but they are so very different.” He expresses a fondness of the Thai people

Barbaresco. Planted on Roero sandy’s soils, on the left bank of the Tanaro River, Nebbiolo is particularly thin and elegant and is perfect with red meats.

and their elegant professionalism in the hospitality business, adding, “To live in two totally different places is like having two lives!” www.gagliardo.it

Preve Barolo Riserva is a wine star. Garnet red with orange reflections, sweet, spicy scent and light tannin taste; it is an austere yet delicate partner for any meat dish.
