SPECIAL SCREENINGS
A special screening is not like other screenings, to point out the obvious. This sidebar offers a whole range of unique film experiences, like the silent film concert, and our outdoors Winter Cinema. Most of these screenings are also singular in the sense that they take place only once during the festival, so this might be the place to start planning your schedule!
Utekino: Utendørs film for store og små
WINTER CINEMA

BED AND SOFA
TRETYA MESHCHANSKAYA
SOVIET UNION 1927 DIRECTOR: Abram Room SCREENPLAY: Abram Room, Viktor Shklovsky CINEMATOGRAPHY: Grigori Giber CAST: Nikolai Batalov, Lyudmila Semyonova, Leonid Yurenev, Vladimir Vogel, Yelena Sokolova RUNNING TIME: 1h 35m PRODUCER: Arsenal

The young married couple Kolya and Lyuda live with their cat in a small apartment in Meshchanskaya 3 Street in Moscow. He is goofy, with a strong macho streak; she is bored and trapped in her wifely role. One day Kolya runs into homeless army buddy Voldoya and offers him to sleep on the couch. This hardly improves the atmosphere, but while Kolya is away on business, sparks start to fly between Voldoya and Lyuda and now Kolya ends up on the couch. The mènage á trois settles into a daily routine, but everything is upturned when Lyuda announces that she is pregnant.
bed and sofa boldly breaks with official Soviet film by showing social problems and portraying the lives of individuals. In addition, it is cheeky and entertaining also for modern audiences. A household of three, with two dumb men and one strong woman still holds irresistible appeal.

ORPHÉE
FRANCE 1950 DIRECTOR: Jean Cocteau SCREENPLAY: Jean Cocteau CINEMATOGRAPHY: Nicolas Hayer CAST: Jean Marais, Maria Casarès, François Perier, Maria Déa RUNNING TIME: 1h 35m PRODUCER: André Paulvé SOURCE: Norsk filmklubbforbund / Europe’s Finest

The ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice tells of two lovers separated by death. Orpheus tries to regain his beloved Eurydice, but fails when he breaks his vow not to turn around and look at her as they walk back from the realm of the dead. In Jean Cocteau’s film version, this myth is strongly rewritten and set in the hip young milieu of 1950s Paris, where Orpheus is a popular poet. The film introduces new characters, such as the Princess of Death, her chauffeur and two mystery men on motor bikes, and Cocteau is said to have added several autobiographical elements to the story.
orphée reflects the gloom of post-war France in a modernist form. It was a box-office success and has remained an important classic of French cinema.
THE DIRECTOR
Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) was a leading French artist in the twentieth century. He was a writer, painter, designer and filmmaker, and moved in the same circles as Eric Satie, Pablo Picasso and Marcel Proust. Cocteau believed that a filmmaker should both write and direct, but also cover areas such as cinematography and set design.

BEYOND HORIZONS
This video art program focuses on resource management, notions of landscape and human rights in the New North.

THE RIGHT TO THE LAND AND THE WATER RETTEN TIL LANDET OG VANNET
DIR: Geir Tore Holm, / Norway 2010-11 / 14m
The film is based on interviews with people who are affected by the Finnmark Act by which «the Sami have collectively and individually acquired rights to land». The various viewpoints are voiced by a man who is out logging – traditional knowledge meets formalized opinions on land use.
HOLLOW EARTH

DIR: Tanya Busse/Emilija Skarnulyte / Canada/ Lithuania 2014 / 8m
This is a visual meditation and examination of contemporary resource conditions within the circumpolar areas of the North. Combining research material, landscape shots and archival footage, this short film hopes to reflect over the changing image of the north, as a site where violence, desire, greed, and emotions are played out.
TERRA NULLIUS II

DIR: Siri Hermansen / Norway 2013 / 14m
This film focuses on the ongoing conflict between the mining industry and the Saami’s right to their land. Through microstudies and participant observations, Hermansen takes her point of departure in the mining community of Kiruna and the surrounding Sami areas in northernmost Sweden, located between the mountains Luossavaara and Kiirunavaara.

THERE’S GROUND IN THE VESTFJORD DET ER BOTN I VESTFJORDEN
DIR: Karianne Stensland / Norway 2014 / 9,5m
Oil, fish, decay and growth are central elements in this short film. On a warm summer day, Karianne Stensland crosses the Vestfjord in a rowing boat. The journey from Steigen to Lofoten takes six hours. While rowing, Stensland is confronted with an anxiety about the depth, marine life, seismic activity, and living in one of the richest country in the world.
LEAVE IT IN THE GROUND

DIR: Oliver Ressler / Austria 2013 / 18m
With the idyllic Lofoten archipelago as its background, the film describes the climate crisis not as a technical and scientific problem, but as a political problem. It discusses how ecological and humanitarian disasters caused by global warming might topple old orders and open up for long-term social and political transformations, both positive and negative.
BREAKING THE ICE/VANGUARD

DIR: Kjetil Berge / Norway 2014 / 12m
For the 2013 Barents Spektakel festival, the Norwegian artist Kjetil Berge drove an ice cream van fromLondon to Kirkenes via Murmansk. Along the way he exchanged ice creams for a chat about the weather with people he met. This film is based on Berge’s trip.

NOMAD TALK
DIR: Matti Aikio / Norway 2014 / 8m
The film gives a glimpse of how the Sámi people define and relate to place, home, animals, and nature. It comprises stories on Sámi nomadism and the vulnerability of reindeer to predators.
Governance of natural resources and the rights to the land and the sea
The expression to look beyond the horizon can be understood as meaning to search for new knowledge, or to look towards what we cannot yet fully understand or perceive. The short film program Beyond Horizons focuses on works by artists who question the governance of natural resources in Northern Norway and the High North. An important issue in this regard is the right to the land and the sea. Another core issue is climate change, and the impact local interventions can have on a global scale. By exploring these themes, the artists included in this program imply that we need to think new, or even learn from what we already know to look beyond the given horizons.
Though these themes are highly relevant in the present geopolitical situation, the films screened in this program also relate to a tradition within visual art dealing with Northern Norway. Since the 16th century, Northern Norway has been a popular motive for scientists, artists and travelers. While an outside gaze for a long time characterized the schema of Northern Norway within visual arts, the creation of a Northern Norwegian identity and the revitalization of Sami and Kven culture contributed to the creation of an inside gaze from the 1970s and onwards.
Artists’ interest in Northern Norway and the High North has increased lately due to the current political situation, and the discourses produced on Northern Norway within the field of visual art seem more diverse than ever before. Even so, like during Romanticism nature is still a core concept in artworks relating to Northern Norway and the High North.

WORK IN PROGRESS: FRA BALKONGEN
WORK IN PROGRESS: ON THE BALCONY

After his success with out of nature, director Ole Giæver is under way with his third feature film. In the course of one year, he observes the world from his own balcony: the neighborhood, the city and the nature, life on the outside; and the relations and everyday life on the inside. from the balcony is a thematic film essay, a visual and mental journey from our innermost thoughts and feelings, via observations of the mundane and ordinary, to the fundamental question of our role in the big universe. Estimated premiere is September 2016.

good is a feature-length documentary about the so-called Snåsamannen, the Norwegian healer Joralf Gjerstad. Gjerstad causes both positive and negative reactions among people: Some are convinced of his powers, other remain skeptical. good is a film about a man who has spent sixty-five years of his live to try to help other people regain their inner powers. We get to meet people whom for some reason have been given up by the system – or who have given up themselves.
In this event, director Margreth Olin will let us in on the process behind the film and her meetings with Gjerstad, and show clips from the film.
The presentation will be given in Norwegian.

WORK IN PROGRESS: ALT DET VAKRE
NORWAY 2015 DIRECTOR: Aasne Vaa Greibrokk

Sarah (Ann Eleonora Jørgensen) and David (Magnus Crepper) meet for the first time in ten years when she arrives at his summer residence. David needs help finishing a play, which turns out to be a dramatization of their long, troublesome relationship. The film presents three love stories about seemingly different couples; all named Sarah and David, but played by different actors in respectively their 20s, 30s and 40s.
The lovers are entangled in a vortex of paradoxes, and their chaotic relationship is characterized by love, humor and self-loathing, all binding them together and making their affair highly unpredictable.
Director Aasne Vaa Greibrokk will present the first clips from her new film. The presentation will be held in Norwegian only.

AMBULANCE
PALESTINE 2015 DIRECTOR: Mohamed Jabaly SCREENPLAY: Mohamed Jabaly CINEMATOGRAPHY: Mohamed Jabaly RUNNING TIME: 45m PRODUCER: Håkon B. Toft SOURCE: Håkon B. Toft

The city of Gaza was the target of an Israeli military operation in July and August 2014. Filmmaker Mohamed Jabaly wanted to document the human costs of the attacks, and decided to join an ambulance staff, knowing they would be on the front line constantly. They were treating injuries when possible and when it wasn’t, they evacuated the wounded from all over the Gaza strip to hospitals and safe shelters. Jabaly’s camera was rolling continuously, capturing difficult scenes directly, with no distance, no chance to analyze.
This film shows both daily life in Gaza during the attacks and the routines of the ambulance staff. Not only how they put their lives in danger to save others, but also in the moments of normality: joking, dreaming and remembering what ordinary life without war is like.

dawn takes place at the beginning of a new aeon, years after a global apocalypse. Surrounded by an endless desert – hazy, drab, and bleak – two survivors eye each other with the same depraved mutual suspicion with which they contemplate their inhospitable surroundings.
This is a mythological chamber play about faith, the beyond and the struggle against dehydration, in a wide-open, post-apocalyptic landscape. The film features Ingar Helge Gimle and Torstein Bjørklund in its two roles, and is characterized by sparse dialogue and hauntingly hypnotic cinematography.

MIRAKLET I VISKAN
VISKAN MIRACLES
SVEDEN NORWAY 2014 DIRECTOR: John O. Olsson SCREENPLAY: John O. Olsson CINEMATOGRAPHY: John O. Olsson CAST: Rolf Lassgård, Lia Boysen, Marika Lindström, Douglas Johansson, Ingvar Hirdwall, Elisabeth Carlsson RUNNING TIME: 1h 45m PRODUCER: John O. Olsson, Anna Björk SOURCE: Giraff Film

Bjarne and Malin live with their two daughters in Viskan, a small town by the banks of the river Ljungan in Sweden. Malin’s parents Halvar and Gerda live just across the river, but Bjarne has never been on good terms with his father-in-law. This is partly due to the fact that Halvar, when he reached his retirement age, reluctantly let Bjarne take over his once so successful moving company. Even though Halvar continues to blame his son-in-law for poor management, Malin is forced to ask him to guarantee for Bjarne’s new loan.
With veteran Rolf Lassgård (the hunters, the Wallander series) in a leading role, the miracle in viskan tells the story of how class conflicts and personal strife can turn things upside-down not only for a family, but for an entire community.
