Films from the North presents the best of new shorts and documentaries made in the Barents region and other polar areas. In our other sidebars we present highlights from all parts of the world; this sidebar showcases the best of the High North. The Tromsø Palm is awarded the best film in competition.

Her main goal is to find her father who has gone missing in Bosnia. After a meeting with Abdi, a fourteen-year-old refugee from Somalia, she thinks she has become a drug addict; she sees things in the sky. aurora borealis is a charming and humorous story with a politically difficult backdrop.

Simon finds himself in an untenable position and has to make a very difficult decision: leave his mother, even if he knows she can't cope by herself, or give up his own dreams and stay.

The introduction of pornographic images into his life complicates his relationship to his parents, and their house becomes a minefield filled with uncomfortable interactions. The film is a thematic sequel to Krane Meby’s last short god maskingeværlyd which screened at tiff 2013.

When film director Morten Conradi's father met Igor Trapitsin, a Russian prisoner of war, for the first time in Brønnøysund in Norway 1945, it was the beginning of a friendship that lasted until Morten’s father died in 1977. Morten always wanted to find Igor and find out how he survived the barbaric conditions in the camps during the Second World War. So in 2009 Morten went to Moscow to meet him. The answer Igor gave was unexpected, he simply said: Singing saved my life .

A JOURNEY INTO THE HEART OF SÁPMI.
the 7 sami stories is a project initiated by The International Sámi Film Center, Kautokeino. It gives voice to contemporary Sami screen storytellers, embodying visions of a new generation Sami filmmakers, made as a collaborate project.
Seven directors and three producers each shot a film, in a span of six weeks, using the same film team, in the village Kautokeino on the vast tundra of Sápmi.
the 7 sami stories cross many borders, telling the stories that have been kept silent.
You will meet dark dancing forces haunting a young reindeer herder, young girls departing on dangerous hitchhike and a man who escapes emotionally from his sick wife. You will hear the healing voice of ancestors and you will be aggravated by a true story of priests burning Sami hats. You will be astonished by impossible love, divided by the forces of nature and finally entertained by a rebellious political comedy about a Sami uprising.
