City:Scope

Today 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. In 2050 it is predicted that this number will increase to 80%. The city of Tromsø is expected to grow from today’s 72 000 inhabitants to at least 86 000 by 2028, meaning roughly 1 000 new people per year. Is it possible to relate Tromsø’s development to trends in global urbanization? What kind of choices can we make, as individuals and as communities, to ensure that our cities will be habitable places? Wait a minute – what do we mean by “habitable”? And who is this “we”?

slightly modified housing: How do the residents in an apartment building owned by the municipality react to the news that their building is going to be renovated? These personal spaces are laden with stories, years of living, and they are soon to be slowly mutilated and then transformed into a new place. Is new always better? estate, a reverie: A personal, poetic film essay about life among the ruins in a soon-to-be-demolished housing estate in London. The film is by and about the residents, exploring how social dynamic changes and new relationships develop in this extreme situation.

true stories: David Byrne (Talking Heads) visits the small town of Virgil in Texas, where citizens are celebrating Virgil’s “150th Anniversary of Specialness”. This place is so normal it’s weird. do the right thing: Spike Lee’s take on life in the hood in the 80s before the gentrification of Brooklyn. The hottest day of the year, bright colors, loud music, racial tension – elements identifying a specific place and time. slacker: A portrait of a city that is physically anonymous, but that will be redefined by future events, rendered through a series of snapshots of nameless characters that run into other nameless characters totally by coincidence. this is our city: The day’s 24 hours are distilled to 24 minutes each in three films from two cities and one village. An exercise in finding the essence of the identity of place.

the human scale is all about designing cities around people, not in spite of them. It’s actually cheaper, and it lasts longer! social life of small urban spaces: Humorous short documentary that is exactly what its title implies, though it could easily be called “between the buildings”. What attracts people to stop, sit down, maybe even talk to each other, in a city? our metropolis is a lesson in how to wipe out the history of a city center, including thousands of jobs in traditional trades, and replace all this with giant malls where few can afford to shop, an airport few can afford to use, and a metro to get between these places.

garden lovers is about loving gardens and lovers in gardens, about the birds and the bees, about time passing, about life and death. What can gardens tell us about the quality of life in cities?

do the right thing is set in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York, a neighborhood with black, white, Puertorican, Italian, Korean and other ethnic groups. Mookie (Spike Lee) is a delivery man for Sal’s Italian pizzeria. On the hottest day of summer, local original Buggin’ Out asks Sal why he only has pictures of italian-americans on his “Wall of Fame”, after all, they’re in a black neighborhood? Their argument is just the beginning of a day where mutual suspicion and underlying tensions in the hood erupt, with fatal consequences.

This is Spike Lee’s international breakthrough, and established Brooklyn as his filmic universe. It forcefully exposes racism in America, but is also a film about a very particular urban environment. When space is a scarce commodity, how can different groups co-exist and avoid conflict? And what does it really mean to do the right thing?

Haggerston Estate var en massiv boligmasse av murstein som dekket mange kvartal i Hackney, London. Da det ble bygget på 30-tallet, var området et utopisk eksempel på framtidens sosialboliger. Utgangen ble nitrist: Etter flere tiår manglende vedlikehold ble Haggerston Estate vedtatt revet.

estate, a reverie er et poetisk dokumentarisk filmessay, med musikk komponert og fremført av Olivia Chaney, som følger de siste sju årene det bodde folk der. Filmskaperen var selv en av beboerne. Filmen avdekker og feirer overlevelsesevnen til en marginalisert gruppe mennesker som lever på det makthavernes nåde. Den viser også hvordan nye former for fellesskap oppsto blant beboerne helt fram til rivningen, noe som sier noe verdifullt om sosiale prosesser knyttet til urbane livsformer. estate, a reverie is a poetic documentary film essay that tracks the passing of the massive Haggerston Estate in Hackney, London, and the utopian promise of social housing it offered when it was built in the 1930s. After decades of lack of maintenance, the whole area was condemned. The last building, Samuel House, was the home of the filmmaker until it demolished in the fall of 2014.

Filmed over the final seven years, estate, a reverie reveals and celebrates the resilience of marginalized people who live their lives at the mercy of governmental and financial decisions. It also shows how new forms of community took form among the residents as the date for the final move approached, offering valuable insights in social processes in cities. Perhaps it is not just a question of where we live, but how? With music composed and performed by Olivia Chaney.

Dokumentaren garden lovers – tittelen har en subtil dobbeltbetydning – viser oss at hagestell kan være både lidenskapelig og romantisk. Vi blir kjent med en rekke finske par, i ulike faser av livet, som elsker hagearbeid, naturen og hverandre. Ett par prøver å dyrke fram Finlands største gresskar, et annet småkrangler om luking av ugress. For noen er hagearbeidet terapi i en sorgprosess, for andre en kilde til avkobling. Vi får se de mest fantastiske bed og kreasjoner, strengt symmetriske og viltvoksende naturlige.

In the sparsely populated Nordic countries, having a house with a garden is natural for many people. The documentary garden lovers proves that gardening can be a romantic and passionate affair. We follow a handful of Finnish couples in all stages of life, whose take care of their gardens together, and who share a passion for gardening, nature and each other. They invite us into their lives, and not least into their gardens, which range from strictly symmetrical spaces to veritable jungles.

With elegance, warmth and humor, garden lovers demonstrates how gardening mirrors people’s lives and personalities. This charming film will provide a pleasant, sunny escape from the cold Norwegian winter roaming outside.

Life in the cities is modern and enchanting but how do we plan these cities in a way, which takes human behavior into account? In the human scale, the renowned Danish documentarist Andreas Dalsgaard lets us in on the many challenges and solutions that exist in modern metropolises around the world. The film’s vantage point is the work of revolutionary architect Jan Gehl, who wants cities to be designed to take sustainability and human needs for inclusion into account. That means freeing cities from the invasion of cars and creating space for pedestrians and bikeways. His thinking has inspired cityplanners from Copenhagen to Beijing, from Shanghai to New York, from Los Angeles Dhaka.

Bangalore er de siste årene etablert som Indias high tech-hovedstad, og det er gjennomført enorme utbygginger; massiv veibygging, nytt metro-nett, en ny og topp moderne flyplass, luksusboliger og shoppingsentre – alt med estetikk hentet fra den vestlige storbykulturen. Over the last decade, Bangalore, the high-tech capital of India, has tried to become a “global city” and a “world class metropolis”. Large infrastructural projects have been commissioned: roads without traffic lights, a metro system, and a state-of-the-art international airport. Exclusive housing enclaves and glitzy malls modelled upon aesthetics and spatial dimensions from other parts of the world have proliferated, with no relation to the people actually living in the city today. There has been little, if any, opening to allow for alternative ways of imagining city development.

our metropolis follows the transformation of the cityscape from 2008 to 2013. This story of the struggle over a city’s future has at times absurd dimensions, something the filmmakers exploit to humorous effect. This is an entertaining, non-moralizing lesson in what can happen when developers try to get away with not including the residents in the planning process.

En rekke merkverdige karakterer befinner seg i byen Austin i delstaten Texas. De er navnløse, men har etiketter (f.eks. T-shirt Terrorist). De støter borti hverandre, den ene etter den andre, i en serie scener uten indre sammenheng. Kameraet henger seg på først en karakter, så neste. slacker er et portrett av en by uten synlige landemerker, en bysymfoni uten musikk, et snapshot av en svunnen tid, fra filmskaperen som ga oss boyhood.

A series of odd and unusual characters drifts through the cityscape that is Austin, Texas. Nameless, they each navigate their way through the city’s streets, parks, library and traffic. The camera follows them as they bump into each other, capturing short scenes that are not connected by a plot. The only thing they have in common is place; they live in one of the fastest growing cities in the country. It was impossible to know then that Austin stood on the brink of a major transformation: From being a liberal university town that stood out from the rest of Texas, Austin would soon be the world’s hipster capital nr 1, and a center for the music and media industry.

slacker is a portrait of a city with no obvious landmarks, a city symphony without music, a snapshot of time gone by. All this from the filmmaker that gave us boyhood.

Boligtårnet Bois-le-Prêtre i Paris er tidligere kjent som «Alcatraz». Etter at den falleferdige bygningen unngikk rivning, bestemte byens boligmyndigheter seg for å renovere den, leilighet for leilighet. Oppdraget gikk til en gruppe prisvinnende arkitekter. Selv om de går til oppgaven med omhu og sans for detaljer, blir prosjektet en omveltning for de som bor i blokka, på godt og vondt. This fascinating documentary deals with an ambitious and quite special renovation project in Bois-le-Prêtre, an apartment tower in Paris. The building popularly known as “Alcatraz” was run down and ready for demolition, but instead the city authorities decided to refurbish it, apartment by apartment. Award-winning architects are brought in on the project, and even though they take a careful approach, the process brings some fundamental changes for the inhabitants.

slightly modified housing chronicles the transformation period from the residents’ point of view. They invite us into their personal spheres and we learn everything about their small apartments, their habits and routines, their joys and frustrations. The film is solid proof that in the end, architecture is really about human interaction. It also documents a project that at its very core challenges our consumption culture.

In 1970, the urbanist and analytic William H. Whyte assembled a group to investigate why some urban spaces were social success stories, and others just empty spaces. After 16 years their findings were published, and later adapted to screen. social life of small urban spaces gives a candid view of how people use such spaces, while Whyte’s compelling and humorous voice over elegantly busts several of the then ruling conceptions of urban planning. Whyte’s theories has been widely influential on architects and planners. Perhaps some politicians should have taken notes as well.

So what do people want from public spaces? A place to sit, running water, trees, something to eat, and other people to be around. social life... is a real gem, a classic, wise and unpredictable talk documentary.

Programmet this is our city består av tre kortfilmer, unike portretter av tre vidt forskjellige steder i ulike verdensdeler: Los Angeles, Hanoi, Old Crow (Yukon). Både formen og teknikken er inspirert av fortidens avantgardistiske dokumentarister. Filmene er laget i månedslange workshops under overskriften «The Sound We See», ledet av Paolo Davanza og Lisa Marr, to filmskapere og mentorer fra Echo Park Film Center i Los Angeles.

Deltakerne er folk i alle aldrer, alt fra folk som aldri har tatt i et kamera til profesjonelle filmskapere. Hvert prosjekt begynner med utforsking av byens liv gjennom et helt døgn, time for time. I filmen er hver time komprimert til ett minutt. Alt er skutt på film. I to tilfeller er filmopptakene også framkalt av deltakerne selv. Dette er en analog filmopplevelse fra begynnelse til slutt, og en feiring av fellesskapspotensialet og energien som ligger i den urbane/ moderne livsstilen.

this is our city consists of three unique celluloid portraits of three places in the world today: Los Angeles, Hanoi, Old Crow (Yukon). The films draw on the rich traditions and techniques of past avant-garde urban documentarians while exploring new approaches to collaborative creative process and celebrating the energy and possibility of 21st century urbanism.

These films are the results of community efforts by first-time filmmakers and professionals of all ages, made in one month long workshops called “The Sound We See”, led by filmmakers/mentors Paolo Davanza and Lisa Marr from the Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles.

Each project starts as a 24-hour exploration of city life; in the film, one minute represents one hour. Everything is shot on film. In two cases, the film is hand processed by the participants. It is an analogue film experience from start to finish.

I den fiktive småbyen Virgil forbereder innbyggerne seg til «Celebration of Specialness»-festivalen, 150-årsmarkeringen for Texas’ løsrivelse fra Mexico. Med Talking Heads-sjef og regissør David Byrne som forteller og guide får vi et innblikk i de ofte underlige Virgil-beboernes liv.

true stories er en pseudo-dokumentar som dekonstruerer amerikansk småbyliv under Reagan-tiden. Filmen portretterer, ofte gjennom et slør av bisarr og Twin Peaks-aktig humor, optimismen som rådet under den amerikanske kapitalismens glansdager, med bygging av nye shoppingsentre i hver forstad og klokketro på en pastellfarget fremtid. Filmen er også en musikkfilm, med Byrne- og Talking Heads-låter som gjennomgående soundtrack. true stories viser også John Goodman i en av hans første store filmroller, som den countrysyngende lab-arbeideren Louis.

The people of Virgil, a fictitious small town, prepare for the “Celebration of Specialness” festival, a 150-year anniversary for Texas’ independence from Mexico. Guided by David Byrne, Talking Heads’ lead singer and the film’s director, the film explores the town’s many strange characters.

true stories is a pseudo-documentary that deconstructs American small town life. Saturated with bizarre humor à la twin peaks, the film manages to convey the characteristic optimism of Reagan-era capitalism, when shopping malls were built in every suburb and the future seemed bright. The film is also a David Byrne/Talking Heads musical, and features John Goodman in his first major role, as the country music loving lab worker Louis.

THE DIRECTOR

David Byrne (b. 1952) is a composer, songwriter and singer originally from Scotland, but raised in the U.S. He is known as the frontman of the New Wave/punk band Talking Heads and as a solo artist. Byrne won an Academy Award for Best Soundtrack for THE LAST EMPEROR in 1988.
