REGISSØREN Robert Guédiguian (f. 1953) er kjent som en sosialt og politisk bevisst regissør. Han legger ofte handlingen i sine filmer til hjembyen Marseille og bruker de samme skuespillerne. SNØEN PÅ KILIMANJARO ble vist i programmet Un certain regard i Cannes i 2011, og flere av Guédiguians senere filmer er nominert til Gullbjørnen i Berlin.

THE DIRECTOR Robert Guédiguian (b. 1953) is a profiled French filmmaker known for his social and political commitment. Many of his films take place in Marseille and feature the same actors. He has earned several nominations for the Berlin Golden Bear, and THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2011.

Fagforeningskjempen Michel mister jobben på havna i Marseille, men virker like glad: Han kan leve på pensjonen, stelle hjemme, få tid til barnebarna og drikke rødvin på verandaen. Og når han og kona også får tur til Kilimanjaro i bryllupsdagsgave, er alt såre vel. Så blir paret utsatt for en forbrytelse. Den får følger for reisen, for ekteskapet og for måten Michel ser på sitt virke i fagforeningen. Har han virkelig talt de svakestes sak i alle disse årene?

Michel is laid off from his job at the Marseille harbour, but seems happy nonetheless: He lives off his pension, does the housework, sees his grandchildren and chills on his veranda. He even gets to go to Kilimanjaro with his wife for their wedding anniversary, but suddenly the two of them are victims of a serious crime that affects their travel plans as well as their marriage. In the end, Michel also has to question his life-long commitment to the trade union: Whose interests has it served?
