Excellence in Equine Nutrition

for hindgut health

What are.... pre and probiotics Under normal conditions, billions of beneficial bacteria live in the horse’s intestinal tract. They help break down fibrous material and produce fatty acids that provide energy. If nothing interferes with these beneficial bacteria, they do their job and digestion proceeds normally.

The importance of probiotics has long been known. These live bacteria have proven beneficial for combating issues within the gastrointestinal tract and keeping the digestive system in a happy place. They also play an important role in strengthening the immune system of the horse. Probiotics are live microorganisms that live inside the gastrointestinal system of your horse. They aid in digestion by essentially cleaning out the gut so that things keep flowing. Like all living things, probiotics need to be fed in order to remain active and healthy, and to benefit your horse as much as possible. This is where Prebiotics come into play. Prebiotics act as food for probiotics. In other words, probiotics eat prebiotics. Prebiotics are the preferred food source for beneficial bacteria, and are given to the horse to stimulate continual growth of these beneficial bacteria. Feeding prebiotic and probiotic supplements will assist to maintain the population of good bacteria in the gut.

Beneficial Bacteria

Pre and Probiotics in the gut

Unfortunately, due to domestication of the modern horse and considering how sensitive the equine digestive system is many things can upset the status quo in the intestinal tract, including an abrupt change in feed, stress from training and travel, or a course of antibiotics. When that happens, the good bacteria suddenly die off, releasing endotoxins and other toxic substances into the bloodstream. At the same time, opportunistic bacteria, which are always present, but usually in small numbers, reproduce and increase. Among the byproducts they produce is lactic acid, which can cause gastrointestinal disturbances.

What is a Synbiotic? Synbiotics refer to supplements combining probiotics and prebiotics in a form of synergism, hence synbiotics.

Pre-biotics Food for bacteria! Prebiotics are substances that can only be metabolised by the gut bacteria, and not the host.

Syn-biotics Synbiotics are a combination of both pro and prebiotics.

Pro-biotics Live yeast / bacteria. Probiotics are active cultures. Keep the digestive system in a happy place.

When to use SynBioVit Ideal for horses that travel alot or under stress due to training/competition. Horses that have received a course of antibiotic treatment. SynBioVit can also be used after anthelmintic administration. Foals who are exhibiting signs of digestive upset. Horses that have difficulty maintaining weight. Horses suffering from diarrhea. Feed to older horses with insufficient dental function, preventing adequate utilisation of food. Feed to high-end performance horses to facilitate overall good health and an optimal functioning gastrointestinal tract. Promote optimal feed utilisation.

A healthy gastrointestinal tract reduces gas, improves digestion and absorption of nutrients, benefits the immune system and leaves less room for colonisation by pathogenic bacteria.

Play a role in strengthening the immune system.

Stomach & Gut Care Digestive

probioitic SynBioVit contains the live yeast probiotic Saccharomyces Cerevisiae. It is an EU authorised digestibility enhancer. Increases nutrient digestibility. Saccharomyces Cerevisiae enhances the activity of fibre-digesting bacteria in the hind gut, resulting in increased fiber digestion of forage and more efficient use of the vitamins and minerals.

Calcium Carbonate A strong and fast-acting antacid. Works by directly neutralizing stomach acid.

prebioitic Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are composed of complex sugars. Stimulates growth of desirable bacteria Acts as substrates for microbial populations to utilise, and thus promote increased intestinal efficiency. Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) are made of more complex sugars commonly found in the cell walls of yeast.

Stabilizes bacterial populations. Optimises utilization of the diet. Performance horses are often fed high-starch diets which can be difficult to digest. The bacteria in the hind gut ferment this starch and produce lactic acid instead of VFA’s. The lactic acid causes a drop in pH and kills the bacteria that normally ferments fibre. This can lead to serious problems such as colic or laminitis. Saccharomyces Cerevisiae can reduce lactic acid accumulation and maintain pH within the normal range of the hind gut.

MOS may prevent harmful bacteria from growing by binding them and carrying them out of the horses body. MOS improve digestibilty and support gastrointestinal health.

Energy Releasing B Vitamins B Vitamins Disruption of hind gut flora can reduce the endogenous fermentation of B Vitamins. B Vitamins have many important roles in the body: Energy production; proper nerve cell transmission; cell reproduction and division (especially rapidly dividing ones such as red blood cells).

Protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism.

B-vitamin supplementation may be beneficial: To stabled horses with little access to fresh pasture.

Heavily exercising horses.

Horses with GI conditions that may interfere with normal gut flora, and any periods of stress.

Vitamins B1

Vitamin b2

Vitamin b12

There is limited storage of vitamin B1 in the horse, which indicates that horses need a regular supply in the diet.

Niacinamide is used in a wide range of conditions based on its cellprotecting effects especially in blood vessels, nerve tissue, the digestive system and skin.

Required for aerobic energy production in the body and other chemical processes. Usually horses can meet the NRC dietary requirement of Riboflavin from a combination of fresh grass or alfalfa hay plus microbial production of the vitamin in the intestine.

Also called cobalamin, has a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and the formation of red blood cells.

Plays a very important role in glucose metabolism. Since the breakdown of carbohydrates is increased during racing or performance, it is important that thiamin be available in sufficient quantity. The addition of supplemental thiamin to the diet of performance horses has received particular attention as: 1.

The diet of the performance horse is very energy dense, hence, there are greater demands on thiamin for glucose metabolism.

Thiamin is thought to reduce lactate levels, which may also improve the anaerobic threshold level in supplemented horses.

3. Thiamin is reported to have a calming effect in highly strung horses.

Like all of the B vitamins it is involved in energy metabolism as nicotinamide and forms part of the structure nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is needed for the release of energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins. There is a greater utilisation of niacin by horses in hard work on very energy dense rations. The first signs of a niacin deficiency in a species are loss of appetite, reduced growth, generalised muscular weakness and diarrhoea.

Also required for the production of propionate, a major energy source derived from the fermentation of carbohydrates.

Stabled horses with little access to pasture or heavily exercised horses may require supplementation. It is not absorbed well and is excreted in the urine, which means it needs to be supplied regularly since little storage occurs in the body. There is a greater demand on riboflavin with increased feeding and exercise in the horse.

PANTOTHENIC ACID Required to synthesize coenzyme-A (CoA), as well as to synthesize and metabolize proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.
