Honoring

“One of the many lessons my grandfather, TRADITION founder Tip Enebak, repeated to me growing up was to pursue my goals with 'reckless abandon.'

What exactly does this mean? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, to be reckless is to 'act without caring about the consequences,' and to have abandon is to possess 'a complete lack of inhibition or restraint.'

'COMMITMENT, COURAGE, FOCUS, AND EFFORT, PURSUED WITH RECKLESS ABANDON'

Sometimes being reckless means forsaking momentary comfort, taking risks, and making difficult decisions, but in these moments TRADITION has risen to the occasion. Much like my grandfather himself, TRADITION has always sought to do the right thing, regardless of the consequences.

As you flip through these pages, you will see how this rare level of passion and commitment has seeped into the communities surrounding TRADITION and beyond. You will witness the positive effects that integrity, generosity, and compassion can have in business and in life, so long as they are pursued with reckless abandon.

When you work alongside TRADITION, you can be assured that you are receiving the utmost effort, commitment, courage, and focus. Not pursued gently, but recklessly.

Mother Teresa, the founder of Missionaries for Charity and a Catholic Saint, once said “Ifyouwanttobringjoytothewholeworld, gohomeand love your family.”

The message here is clear: caring for your family can change the world. At TRADITION, we wholeheartedly believe this, and we also recognize that family extends beyond the home. It is our community members, our clients, our business partners, and our coworkers. It is the long history of those who came before us, and the hope-filled future for those who will come after. Caring for these families makes a profound difference, in business and in life.

With a rich history and heritage, a tight-knit family of vertically integrated companies, and a generous heart for the community, our commitment to family—both at home and beyond—is a foundational element of who we are. It is part of why we are still here, four generations later, and upholding the same values our predecessors established over 100 years ago.

IT IS TRADITION THAT IS OUR GREATEST STRENGTH.

TRADITION is ready to walk alongside you as you build the future of your dreams. Whether your goals lie in finance, land development, home building, or community service, we are eager to make them possible. Through every step of the process, we act with compassion, honesty, and commitment, just like we would toward our own families.

TOGETHER, LET’S BUILD A TRADITION THAT LASTS.

TRADITION EMPLOYEES GOT ACTIVE AT THE FALL COMPANY EVENT

With so many different companies under the TRADITION umbrella, spread across multiple locations, TRADITION prioritizes gathering employees together under one roof to mingle, connect, and have fun. In September, TRADITION hosted an employee event at the Chaska Curling and Event Center, in which employees were given the chance to receive a crash course on curling, and even try their hand at the thrilling game. Employees also had the opportunity to get crafty with The Mustard Seed Landscape and Garden Center, who led a workshop on creating DIY Planters. Throughout the afternoon, fellow co-workers relaxed, enjoyed delicious food and drinks, and spent quality time catching up with those across various companies. Outside it may have been a rainy Monday, but inside there was laughter, connection, and of course, good company.

"We thought curling would be a great way to let loose and just enjoy each other's company. It's really special to be able to get active and have some laughs together outside of the office."

A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE

Robert Thomas Homes holds itself and its employees to a standard of excellence in everything they do. And these high standards pay off in a number of ways. Visually, in the aesthetic of their innovative, design-forward homes; audibly, in the joy and gratitude customers express after stepping into these homes; and measurably, in their collection of awards that recognize this commitment to excellence.

Robert Thomas Homes is honored to have been recognized by their building industry peers for their design and construction excellence in the year of 2023. This year marked their 38th Reggie AwardSM in just 12 years, graciously granted by industry experts in recognition of design, construction quality, and value of their homes. Robert Thomas Homes is humbled to be the most awarded builder by Housing First Minnesota, and commends its outstanding architects, construction professionals, and tradespeople for their consistent effort. RELATIONSHIPS KEEP THE DIRT MOVING

Digging dirt for over 118 years has taught Enebak Construction (ECC) a thing or two. Across its four generations as a family-owned business, they have consistently called upon these lessons, even amid technological advancements and operational shifts. Perhaps the most grounding lesson of all continues to be this: relationships are what keep the dirt moving.

It is no coincidence that ECC’s primary source of work is with repeat clients, some of whom they have been working with for 40-plus years. It is the result of their devotion to building strong, trustworthy relationships with clients, a principle that remains at the heart of each project executed. It's simple, really—prioritize people, and the rest will fall into place.

ECC does not just apply this value to their direct clients, but to the many other contacts they encounter across the various stages of each project. For over 50 years, they have maintained mutually beneficial relationships with industry professionals including engineers, testing companies, subcontractors, banks, and equipment providers—allowing them to maximize value for their clients and each other.

Perhaps most importantly, ECC fosters strong, meaningful relationships within its own employees and other TRADITION entities, prioritizing its team’s happiness and connectedness every step of the way.

This is why ECC is still digging dirt more than 100 years later. Strong relationships build trust, and trust builds confidence. Confidence that allows them to always perform with their clients’, trade partners’, and employees’ best interest in mind. That’s what keeps the dirt moving.

AN ICE-BREAKING TRIBUTE TO MILITARY, FAMILY, AND SPORTS

In November, TRADITION and United Heroes League (UHL) celebrated a very special Veterans Day, when they cut the ribbon on the brand new SCHEELS® Rink at the Tradition Veterans Complex in Hastings, MN. The new venue gets to the heart of UHL’s mission, summed up by president and founder Shane Hudella in three simple words: “military, family, and sports.” Veterans, families, supporters, and community members gathered to witness the grand opening, along with Zach Parise and Devan Dubnyk, former Minnesota Wild players who signed autographs for enthusiastic fans. The NHL-size rink is designated as a space for military kids and Veterans to play, unwind, connect, and excel at the sport of hockey.

Hudella referred to the exciting day as “one step in a bigger plan,” as UHL continues building the nation’s first sports complex for military kids and Veterans. TRADITION is proud to work alongside the UHL team as they continue changing the lives of military members and families across the country.

UNITED HEROES LEAGUE: HELPING MILITARY KIDS UNLEASH THEIR INNER HERO

In many ways, sports can reflect the game of life. While scoring goals, beating records, and achieving new milestones is thrilling, it is the relationships built and the lessons learned through each game that truly matter.

Yet for some children, participating in a sport they love isn’t so simple. Especially military kids, who often face greater obstacles to achieving their sports dreams.

“Sports challenge you and build character for everything else you do in life.”
- HOWIE LONG Former NFL defensive end

UNITED HEROES LEAGUE STRIVES TO ELIMINATE THESE OBSTACLES.

Founded by military Veteran Shane Hudella, the Minnesota-based nonprofit works to ensure that children of military families are afforded every opportunity to actively participate in sports. With the aid of generous volunteers, donations, and fundraisers, United Heroes League (UHL) has been able to provide military kids and their families with over $25 million worth of free coaching, sports equipment, game tickets, and cash grants. With this aid, thousands of kids across the U.S. and Canada have been empowered to chase their athletic dreams, whether it be soccer, tennis, hockey, or anything in between—UHL provides support across 14 different sporting pursuits!

FINDING PURPOSE IN PAIN: VOICES OF FAITH, HOPE, AND COURAGE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Each year on Election Day, TRADITION and its friends, families, and business partners set aside time to appreciate what is truly important in life. Amid a world that feels increasingly divided, the annual Faith Hope Courage event shows us how undeniably connected we are, if by nothing other than our shared humanity.

As human beings, we all mess up, fall short, experience pain, and in some cases, feel hopeless. This year’s key speakers know this well. They are five ordinary people, who have overcome setbacks in life with extraordinary faith, hope, and courage. To the crowd of over 600 gathered at Mystic Lake Event Center on November 7th, these luminaries shared their remarkable stories one by one. Among their powerful messages emerged a standout theme: finding the strength to love and serve others, even amid life’s lowest points. While their circumstances differed, each speaker ultimately discovered their true purpose in faith and service—purposes that have filled their hearts and continue to touch the hearts of others each day.

Politics and polls faded away that Election Day as guests embraced this lesson, one that we are all capable of living by with a little faith, hope, and courage.

A MODERN PRAIRIE: WHERE SOPHISTICATION MEETS FUNCTIONALITY

Creating a dream home requires striking a perfect balance between beauty and functionality. A look at one of Homes by Tradition’s latest model homes, an exquisite modern prairie-style home in Rosemount, MN, reveals an effortless achievement of this tricky balance. Chosen as a Dream HomeSM for the Fall Parade of HomesSM, this home is defined by a seamless convergence of functional indoor and outdoor living elements, all set to the tone of a consistent minimalistic style. Resting privately on a 3.5-acre lakefront property, the bold-toned exterior is striking, with smooth panel siding and eye-catching stucco accents. This sleek, sophisticated design is married with functional outdoor living space, including a pool area.

Inside, there is a balance of warm and open spaces supplemented by useful amenities for the whole family, including two home offices, two laundry rooms, a wet bar, fitness gym, and media room. The interior design reflects intentional uses of color, with crisp whites and clean lines contrasted by warm textural elements.

Perhaps most central to this modern prairie style is its ability to let nature take over. Large windows allow for natural light to pour into each space as indoor-outdoor entertaining areas pull elements of nature into the design-forward home. Ultimately, this home is a beautiful marriage of contrasts—and it's safe to say that opposites attract.

PICKLING FOR A PRAYER

RAISING AWARENESS FOR NEUROMUSCULAR DISORDERS THROUGH THE GAME EVERYONE LOVES

In July, TRADITION’s own Taylor Williamson successfully launched the first Pickling for a Prayer event, an initiative that raises funds and awareness for neuromuscular disorders through the great game of pickleball. Taylor, a loan officer at Tradition Mortgage, was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease called Myasthenia Gravis (MG) as a sophomore in college, and is now seeking to make a difference in the lives of those who share similar journeys.

Alongside her family, Taylor has teamed up with Park Nicollet Foundation and HealthPartners with the goal of establishing an accredited Center for Excellence at the Neuroscience Center in St. Paul. The hope is to create a welcoming space for those dealing with various autoimmune and muscular disorders to ask questions, receive support, and live the life they dream of. An admirable cause with an equally admirable leader at the helm. The joyful event, hosted at Lucky Shots Pickleball Club, was an exciting step on the way to achieving Taylor’s goal. With a large show of support and enthusiasm, we will surely see the second annual Pickling for a Prayer event in 2024. TRADITION was proud to sponsor the event, and looks forward to another year!

ONE CHAPTER CLOSED, A NEW ONE BEGINNING

TRADITION DEVELOPMENT REFLECTS ON TWO OF ITS MOST SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS, AND LOOKS AHEAD TO NEW ACHIEVEMENTS

In 2023, Tradition Development closed the chapter on two of its most iconic and longstanding projects—Spirit of Brandtjen Farm and The Harvest of Chaska. Tradition Development has spent over 20 years on each of these neighborhoods, and the thriving communities are a living testament to their commitment to excellence. Looking forward, Tradition Development is excited to focus their energy on new projects across the Twin Cities, but these two neighborhoods will always hold a special place in the TRADITION story.

SPIRIT OF BRANDTJEN FARM

Spirit of Brandtjen Farm in Lakeville is truly a cornerstone of TRADITION. Under land acquisition and development from 2005-2023, the massive project was nearly 20 years in the making. The 540-acre neighborhood features 1,000 single family homes, 369 apartment rentals, miles of walking trails, two community centers with pools, an elementary school, and convenient grocery and retail options. What residents refer to as “The Barn'' is a hallmark of the community, a common gathering space located inside of a historic dairy barn that has been restored to reflect the neighborhood's quality craftsmanship.

"These two neighborhoods will have a lasting impact on their communities. Spirit in particular is truly one-of-a-kind, and will be difficult for any developer to repeat in the future. We are extremely proud of these communities.”

THE HARVEST OF CHASKA

The Harvest of Chaska is an amenity-rich community in Chaska that offers the perfect balance of peaceful country life and convenient city perks. Residential development for the neighborhood began in 2013 and final lots were completed in 2023. The Harvest boasts approximately 345 total acres and 506 single family units, set against the gorgeous backdrop of rolling green hills, wooded ravines, and river valley views. Pedestrian-friendly streets wind through the neighborhood, and community gathering spaces including playgrounds, parks, and walking paths make for a friendly, tight-knit atmosphere.

BECAUSE THEY SERVED US FIRST

PROVIDING SUPPORT TO VETERANS ACROSS THE COMMUNITY AS THEY FIND NEW PURPOSE AFTER MILITARY SERVICE

In 2009, a fated encounter brought two families with generous hearts together. Tom and Jessi McKenna met Scott and Deb Marrier while picking up quilts from a small church in Wisconsin. The two couples quickly connected on their mutual desire to serve homeless Veterans. In one small moment, the seeds were planted for a much larger impact than the two families could have realized. Every Third Saturday (ETS) was born.

With the help of the Hands Foundation and the Marrier family, Tom and Jessi co-founded ETS, with a core mission focused on fostering hope and supporting post-traumatic growth. From their permanent building in Minneapolis, ETS provides a resource center and community hub for Veterans and their families, where they can connect, obtain support, and find new purpose after military service.

The resources offered at ETS are designed to promote that sense of community, which allows ETS to meet each Veteran where they are and assess needs on an individual basis. ETS supplies clothing and hygiene items, provides a monthly meal, grants access to its fitness center, offers an empowerment course called Warrior's Return, employs Veterans through an internship, and connects Veterans to other services as needed.

36 |
spring 2024 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

In 2023, ETS helped over 60 Veterans with emergency assistance, responded to 270 Veterans who reached out for support via the ETS Pop Smoke Resource, celebrated 43 Veterans who graduated Warrior's Return, and saw the ETS Supply Store utilized over 2,200 times by Veterans and their families. But the most impactful changes are those that cannot be measured or seen. These are changes that result when Veterans and their families are embraced by a loving, supportive community and are empowered to rediscover their purpose.

“I remember my first day at Warrior’s Return. I felt like I was around people that understood my struggle and I could relate to them; this helped me to finally open up about my struggles. Over the five-week course I met professionals, doctors, and athletes that taught me more tools than I could ever imagine to help me battle my demons. I realized I was getting my soul back and the demons in my head were losing their grasp over me.”

GENEROSITY MATTERS, AT HOME AND ACROSS THE GLOBE

Tradition Capital Bank (TCB) strives to be a force for good not just in their own community but across the globe. Through their Keystone Giving Program, they partner with and invest in organizations that are tackling some of the world’s toughest problems. One such organization is MATTER, a group of problem solvers, innovators, dreamers, and above all, doers. The global nonprofit helps people launch projects to improve communities through the use of life-giving, creative, and lasting solutions. Their vision for change is based on a simple philosophy:

YOU MATTER, AND YOUR IDEAS AND ACTIONS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.

The Minnesota-based nonprofit, MATTER, leverages some of the state’s most vital resources to tackle global health issues including food insecurity, access to healthcare, and technological limitations. Rather than providing temporary aid, MATTER seeks to reinvent a self-sustaining model of charity that leaves lasting change on communities. This begins with you. Only when individuals believe that their contributions matter, can real change begin.

Since its founding in 2002, MATTER, alongside its tens of thousands of volunteers, partners, donors, and supporters (whom they affectionately refer to as MATTERnation) has distributed more than $772 million in restorative aid, impacting millions of lives across the globe.

Last January, TCB employees had the opportunity to travel to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and experience the work of MATTER firsthand. The team participated in immersive service, from painting the interior of the newly opened Doyle Collaboration Center, to planting chaya trees, to preparing nutritious chaya meals for residents in an elderly care facility. Perhaps the most memorable moment for the team was their visit to the Victoria Falls Hospital, where they were able to see the new equipment TCB had sponsored for use in the maternity ward to improve healthcare for new mothers and their babies.

One of these projects was the newly opened Doyle Collaboration Center in Victoria Falls, which TCB partnered with MATTER to help build. The center has been named

“Shamwari,” a Shona word meaning “my friend.” This title is fitting for the building's purpose, which is designated as a gathering place for local and international community leaders to meet, train, practice, collaborate, and launch ideas that will improve communities across the world. A gift that carries generosity onward.

“We’re inspired to ignite generosity in our employees through international insight trips and local volunteer days to experience the joy of generosity through hands-on service. Most importantly, we want others to flourish.”

UNITING PLAYERS NATIONWIDE

HENDRICKSON FOUNDATION’S 7TH ANNUAL NATIONAL HOCKEY FESTIVAL

In June 2023, the Hendrickson Foundation put on its 7th Annual National Hockey Festival at the NSC Super Rink in Blaine, MN. As a yearly sponsor of the event, TRADITION was proud to witness this year’s astounding success. The four-day event drew 1,300 hockey players from across the country to compete in a celebratory tournament composed of multiple programs of play, including Warrior, Sled, Special, Blind, and Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Across the 80 teams that participated, 29 states were represented, from Alaska all the way to Florida. Players vied to take home the coveted championship belt, which is awarded to the winning team in each division. But even those who fell short of the prize still went home victorious, with new friends and memories to last a lifetime.

A giant reception followed the tournament, in which players were able to meet, connect, and celebrate their achievements together. Among its festivities was a festival plunge, live music, food, drinks, and more. For that joyful weekend, the festival provided a space where players didn't have to think or talk about any challenges they may face, but instead play a sport they love, surrounded by a community that uplifts them. Safe to say, the Hendrickson Foundation’s motto rang true— “Hockey Changes Lives®.”

CHANGING LIVES, ONE PUCK DROP AT A TIME

As a family of Minnesota-based companies, TRADITION is an avid lover of its home state’s favorite pastime: hockey. The irreplaceable life lessons and camaraderie offered by the sport are a joy everyone should have the opportunity to experience. That is why TRADITION supports the impactful work of the Hendrickson Foundation, who give individuals with disabilities and their families the chance to take to the ice, regardless of the challenges they may face.

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

The Hendrickson Foundation aims to break barriers and promote inclusion in the sport of hockey, so that everyone can experience its gratifying, life-changing effects. The nonprofit proudly supports seven different programs for play, each targeted at eliminating barriers to play presented by different physical or cognitive challenges. These programs have grown to include over 40 diversified teams with over 850 athletes.

The MN Wild Blind Hockey - for those with vision impairment.

The MN Wild Special Program - for individuals with developmental disabilities.

The MN Wild Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program was recently launched and is the first of its kind in the country.

Rochester Mustangs Sled Hockey - for people with disabilities.

The MN Wild Sled Hockey - for those with physical disabilities.

The MN Wild Warriors Program - for U.S. Military Veterans with disabilities.

Hope Hurricanes Sled Hockey - a FargoMoorhead-based program for sled hockey.

#HOCKEY CHANGES LIVES

When players take to the ice to play for any of these seven programs, they are accepted into a supportive community where they don’t have to feel different. And above all, they are able to make new friends and have a lot of fun.

RACING FOR HOPE

The 15th annual Hope K event brought great athleticism, heart-warming enthusiasm, and above all, overwhelming HOPE to HopeKids families and our local community in Lakeville last summer. The incredible turnout of participants chose to run a 5K, 10K, or Kids Fun Run in support of HopeKids MN, helping the organization soar past its fundraising goal and bring hope to so many local families.

The warm summer day provided a gorgeous backdrop for families and community members to run, walk, or jog around the scenic Spirit of Brandtjen Farm neighborhood, which has played host to the event for the past 15 years. After the race, runners recharged with locally catered lunch by Carbone’s and a range of exciting family-friendly activities, including a DJ, rock climbing wall, inflatable sports, saw dust dive, tie dye, reptile zoo, bounce house, face painting, petting zoo, Ziggy’s Art Bus, and more.

At the heart of it all was a united support for HopeKids’ mission to bring hope to the families of children battling life-threatening illnesses.

“Having this environment where people can show up together and show their support for one another and HopeKids is what makes this event a success year over year.”

BEYOND MEDICINE: HEALING THROUGH COMMUNITY AND HOPE

Each year in the United States, approximately 500,000 children are battling life-threatening illnesses. While there is no simple solution to fixing this statistic, there are ways to help. Numerous studies have proven that hope can overall increase an individual’s ability to cope with medical conditions.

IN OTHER WORDS, HOPE IS A POWERFUL MEDICINE.

That is why HopeKids strives to provide children and their families with chances to escape from doctors, treatments, and waiting rooms to enjoy welcoming experiences in their communities. HopeKids’ Minnesota chapter puts on up to 550 events a year, some of which are in their own suite at the Xcel Energy Center, where kids and families can catch hockey games, concerts, high school sporting events, rodeos, and more. These moments are essential not just for kids to relax and have fun, but to feel the hope of a whole community behind them.

HOPEKIDS FOCUSES ON FIVE IMPACT AREAS:

• Hope and Anticipation

• Safety and Acceptance

• Family Focus

• Economic Support

• Community and Support

TRADITION has been a proud supporter of HopeKids’ mission for over 17 years and has witnessed hundreds of kids' and families’ lives be positively impacted through their work. While they may not be able to provide children with a cure, HopeKids is providing medicine that can’t be bought or prescribed—the support of a community and hope for the future.

RAISING A GLASS TO TRADITION

The latest batch of Tradition Whiskey carries history on its label—literally. Across each bottle is a 1946 photo of Bob Enebak, the second-generation operator of Enebak Construction and father of TRADITION founder Tip Enebak. The treasured photo is a call back to what this unique whiskey is all about: preserving tradition.

The new batch of Tradition Whiskey is a straight rye whiskey, aged for five years before bottling. On the nose, drinkers will pick up subtle hints of toasted black peppercorn, orange peels, and caramel corn. The palate will then reveal warm cinnamon, vanilla, allspice, and honey.

Tradition Whiskey was a collaboration from members of the TRADITION team to create a unique and exclusive gift for employees and business connections.

MULTIPLYING IMPACT

TRADITION founder, Tip Enebak has become somewhat of a mathematician throughout his career. But not necessarily in the ways you would think. Tip has managed to defy the rules of math as we know it and make an impossible equation possible:

MAKING 2+2 =6, IN THE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND 2+2=6

In other words, he has figured out how to make the whole of something equal more than the sum of its parts. TRADITION has been leveraging this math-defying equation to be a force for good in the community and beyond, and this mindset has seeped into the network of nonprofits they support.

A few years ago, Tip began to notice a few common themes across these nonprofits—many provided assistance in areas affecting children, Veterans, and mental health. Tip encouraged these organizations to open up their resources and communities to one another in order to enhance their service capabilities and better achieve their missions. By working together, they have created a synergy that allows them to do more, and do it better.

In 2023, TRADITION’s partnering nonprofits implemented this equation in a variety of creative ways that made a difference in the lives of so many. And in 2024, this impact will only grow, making 2+2 =60, and maybe even 600, just as Tip always hoped.

spring 2024 62 | SPOTLIGHT

A FEW EXAMPLES OF TRADITION'S NETWORK OF NONPROFITS MAKING 2+2=6:

• United Heroes League shared brand new Nike® and Reebok® shoes, as well as new clothing donations with Every Third Saturday.

• Legacy Fishing Retreat teamed up with The Grief Club of Minnesota to create a special experience for a family on their grief journey. Legacy Fishing Retreat brought the family along on a fishing retreat to Pike Lake Resort. Amid the grief of losing a father/ husband, the family was able to relax and spend time together, connect with other families, and heal together through a variety of fun, relaxing, and spiritual experiences.

• United Heroes League helped The Grief Club of Minnesota bring smiles to three of their grieving families by donating tickets to a sporting event for the families to attend together. After experiencing great loss, the importance of enjoying fun, dynamic activities and making new memories together can not be understated. It was not just a sports game, but truly, a step on these families’ healing journeys.
