1: Bungee Jumping off the Cleddau Bridge - Freefall How long before the bungee starts to go tight?

Constant acceleration equation:

s = distance travelled, which is the length of the bungee = 8m u = initial velocity which is zero t = time taken a = acceleration which, due to gravity, is 9.81ms-2

Constant acceleration equation: v = final velocity

= 0 + 9.81 x 1.3 = 12.5m/s = 28.1mph

• Notice it doesn’t matter how heavy you are! • Do you think this is true? Why?

This is how far you travel when you are stretching the bungee The bungee is 8 meters long before it starts to stretch The bridge is 40 meters high 40m – 8m – how far you stretch the bungee

5: Bungee Jumping off the Cleddau Bridge - Force through the bungee Will the bungee break?

Newton's second law:

Guess the mass of the jumper in kg (1 stone = 6.4kg) Force going through the bungee = mass x (deceleration+9.81)

This is the force going through the bungee The breaking load of the bungee is ~12,000N
