Hockey Sport

T

he 2008 Hockey season has proved to be both exciting and encouraging. We began with our inaugural tour of Malaysia, which will hopefully become a permanent feature of the College calendar. We took nineteen Year 11 and 12 Mrs Lea Wilson boys to Malaysia to play Hockey Team Manager hockey against boys who play a very different style of hockey in conditions very different to those experienced here. We started poorly but in the time we were away the boys rose to the challenge and in the final two games we were highly competitive. After returning from Malaysia we were much tighter as a group and thought that we would have a real chance to finish high in the rankings on the PSA ladder, however, that was not to be. We probably let ourselves down in a couple of games and I am sure that the 1st XI will be a little disappointed with their final position of fourth. The Year 12 representatives in the 1st XI this year were Tom Coates, Captain, Aaron Shepherdson Vice Captain, Seve Pratico, Scott Sumner, Francis Staude, Brendan Lally, Harvey Fernandes, Hugo Seymour and James O’Hara. Unfortunately we will be losing our coach of the past two years, Graham Reid (“Poss”). Graham has recently been appointed Assistant Coach of the Australian Hockey Team. We would like to thank him for all that he has done for us over the last two years

and wish him well with the Australian team. He will be sorely missed. On the other hand, the 2nd XI had one of their best seasons in recent times. The team, led by Luke Mancini, defeated all opponents except Scotch in winning six of its ten games and finishing equal second. The team had great strength in defence, a solid midfield and a forward line which functioned well in scoring 24 goals. Well done to all boys on their dedication to training and playing the game with great spirit. Hopefully in 2009 many of these young men can take this desire to win into the 1st XI. The 3rd XI also had a reasonably successful year and participated with enthusiasm and really enjoyed their season. Once again I would like to thank Colleen Wheeler for her energy and efforts in getting this team to be such a close unit who always seem to put in the best they can on a week-to-week basis. Once again in Years 8, 9 and 10 we have struggled for numbers in hockey. Across all three year groups we have some very talented players ably led by coaches who always try to get the best out of these boys, but as has happened for the past few years we are let down by the fact we do not get enough boys to play. Players like Tom Metcalf, Luke Screaigh, Dan Carton, and Matt Hawgood, to name a few, all have the potential to play in the 1st XI in the near future. I hope that in 2009 we can encourage more boys to join the Trinity College Hockey teams. Mrs Lea Wilson Hockey Team Manager
