"What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from."-T. S. Eliot,'Four Quarters'

As we approach the year-end nostalgic season; it is once again time to reflect on the year gone by, and what a year 2000 has been! The year 2000 was the start ofa new millennium and for many of us here in Trinity a start of a whole new chapter in our lives. Just as promised, the new century brought event after event that has written and re-written history. "Things ain't what they used to be..." - Frank Norman, British playwright. Sydney 2000, Drama, Formula One, HAP, Sll, HOI, Ian Thorpe, Candide, Dracula, Shakespeare, Slavery, Feminism, Ricky Martin, Pink-slips... the list goes on and on ... I know that it is an enor mous task to attempt to record all the happenings in the past year, and perhaps this yearbook is merely a feeble attempt at this great feat but hopefully we have managed to capture some of the essence of what was Trinity College 2000. It is after a year's worth of investigative reporting (or at least the editorial team claims...), picture taking (we're proud to say that the photography team is as good as any paparazzi you come across), hard-work (this can be judged by the amount of times our computers hung...), screaming editors, stress, chaos, missing articles, misplaced photos, and missed datelines that we FINALLY have done it! The 2000's February Intake yearbook is out. TA DA! "The still small voice ofgratitude"- Thomas Gray, English poet. This would not have been, if not for the tremendous support and help given by so many people in so many different ways. A huge thank you to Mr David Prest, our director, for all his support and enthusiasm for this project which helped kick-start the machinery of the committee. To Joanna Rosewell, Director of Student Services, well, we cannot say a thank you that is big enough for all your guidance, help, and support. You have been the committee's pillar of strength throughout the uncertain journey in the publication of this book. We thank you. To Michelle Wilkinson, Asst. to the Director of Student Services, your enthusiasm and energy has greatly contributed to the success of this book, thanks. The committee also thanks the Lecturers, Tutors and Staff of Trinity College who have contributed to this book, either through writing, granting interviews or even by volunteering to be auctioned as 'slaves'. Our deepest appreciation also goes to Tony Murphy for all his patience and help. Last but not least, the committee would like to thank all the students of Trinity College for supporting us throughout the year whether it be by submitting contributions, coming to our fund raisers or buying this yearbook. Thank you all! Eveiy page you turn you 're leaving your legacy..."- Michael Jackson

We now present to you the Trinity College, February 2000 Yearbook ... enjoy ...

Foreword From :

David Prest Director

Foundation Studies Program It gives me very great pleasure to thank and congratulate this year's Yearbook Committee on an excellent production. The various groups ofstudent enthusiasts have produced a magazine which will bring back fond memories as well as memories of hard academic slog in some areas. The Foundation Year for The University ofMelbourne has many challenges and these are met by the great majority ofour students. Coming to a new country, living independently, making new friends, eating different food, absorbing a different culture, being taught in new ways, learning to argue, debate, discriminate, analyse, synthesize, use a library, write an essay ... the list goes on and on ...are all part ofthe Trinity experience. Perhaps one ofthe greatest things ofall that students can take away from Trinity are new and perhaps life-long friends. This was certainly my own experience from study at The University ofAdelaide many moons ago. February 2000 students will be remembered for many accomplishments and their petition about proposed lELTS testing will certainly in my memory. Those who signed the petition should know that the Warden ofTrinity College,Professor Donald Markwell, worked tirelessly and painstakingly behind the scenes in order that the wishes ofthe students might be achieved. The fact that the petition was presented quite peacefully no doubt helped although it should be pointed out that petitions do not always work! Anyway congratulations and best wishes to all the February 2000 students. Continue to have a wonderful year and be sure to call in and see us when you are engaged in your undergraduate studies. Good Luck I

Foreword From :

Luigi Soccio Director Of Studies

Dear February Students

As your year with us draws to a close I would like to reflect in what has been a very exciting year for staffand students. I hope what you have learnt has been more than what has been communicated to you in your welfare you have in effect been in control of your destinies. I can only report the overwhelming majority ofyou have and will succeed at university. Every day you have made a range ofdecisions without parental supervision. Should I surfthe net or finish my literature assignment? Should I go shopping or attend the Maths support classes on a Saturday morning? Should I go to the movies or study for my examinations? You continually made tiny decisions that combined have determined what future you will have.

I feel that you should feel very proud ofwhat you have achieved in a new country and in a new education programme. You have cross the bridge from school student to soon-tobe undergraduates and 1 hope you will remember the tremendous efforts your lecturers have made and the part that your time at Trinity has played in your future. As you cross that bridge please spare a thought for the many students who have not had the fantastic educational opportunity that you have been offered and that you now have an obligation to ensure the world is a fairer and better place for all and that some of your fine skills should be devoted to this end. Tanti saluti

Foreword From:

Joanna Rosewell Director Of Student Services Well it's about now when it's time not only to say goodbye to friends and your favorite staff but also to remember the good time. 2000 was a big year for the February intake. We had the largest intake yet at Trinity - 431 to be precise - and what a great bunch of people you are! 1 know that this is the kind of place where people like me always say this sort ofthing, but I just want you all to know that I have had the most wonderful time getting to know you all and working with you. From the Student Committee, to the Yearbook Committee,

to the Club organisers and members, to the Latin Dancer,

to all those I met on camp way back in April (Oh - and sincere apologies to all those I yelled at in the stressful moments of the camp) AND to those who have popped into my office just to have a chat (or to ask me a curly question).

I've enjoyed being with such a group of motivated, hardworking, lively, interesting people. Thanks for making my year at Trinity a memorable one. Next year and the years after will certainly be challenging ones but I'm sure they will be good ones as well. A lot of ex-students say that Trinity was the best time of their lives - well, while I hope that you always remember this time fondly and that you never forget us, I hope that you do have other wonderful years of your lives. Trinity will be with you forever. Maybe one day we'll cross paths, maybe not in Australia but in some part of the world and then when we do meet I hope we can sit down together and reminisce.

Finally, before 1 sign off, I'd like to tell you all about the really hard work that has been put into this yearbook by all the committee. They have all slaved away to produce this excellent memento of the February intake 2000. Especially Su Mei who has politely asked, then encouraged and finally just outright demanded pieces from all of us to write (1 know, because 1 was one of the targets) and also Vanessa, a member of last year's February yearbook committee who loyally volunteered her time to come back and help out. Thanks Vanessa. Thanks Su Mei. Thanks Yearbook Committee.

Anyway, enough for me.Good luck to all of you and best wishes.

Barbara Trauer..,

It's hard to believe we're more than half way through the year. This has been a very hardworking February group who made a terrific improvement in Maths 1 from Term 1 to Term 2. The Maths 1B students have been finding it hard to understand why you need clothes to make clothes and 0.4 cars to make a car. Best wishes for the future.

Felicity Fallon... At the end ofthis year I will have been teaching for 34 years! 1 can honestly say that the teaching I have enjoyed most has been my 6 years at Trinity. The students are wonderful and the curriculum challenging(Well,it is Maths 2!!). 1 really enjoy my new role as Pastoral Care Coordinator but 1 am a little sad that it means that 1 do less teaching at Trinity.

Frank Sanders...

1 envy my students. They are so young -compared to some of us -and yet, they are already living and studying overseas! And,really learning to use a second language. 1 wish 1 had been brave(and intelligent)enough to do so at their age. 1 wish them all the best and hope that we can make their dreams come true.

Glen Jennings... The Foundation Studies Program is characterised by a good deal ofintellectual free dom and cultural variety. These features make Trinity an enjoyable place to teach or study. In the Literature Department we select texts valued by the lecturers upon which students hone their academic skills ofanalysis and reflection while developing their appreciation oflanguage and, hopefully, gaining some pleasure. There is an exciting diversity among Trinity's staffand students, with people from many educational and cultural backgrounds. Literature classes provide the opportunity for students to share knowledge and experience, develop opinions, and gain confidence. Some students feel so confident and relaxed in Literature that they give the impression ofsleeping in lectures. I'm sure it's only an impression. Co-operation is a key feature of life at Trinity, and an eagerness to work together extends beyond the classroom. Highlights ofTrinity life for me include the conversations and friendships 1 share with students and colleagues, and the camaraderie ofplaying in the Trinity Soccer Club. I wish all FSP students success in their studies and good fortune in the future.

Teaching psychology in the Foundation Studies Program gives me a unique opportunity to meet with a diverse range ofinternational students. Teaching is a lot offun because the students are always extremely motivated to learn and actively participate in all class discussions and activities. Learning is always accompanied by a lot oflaughter and the best reward is seeing students reach their goal and achieve a place at the University ofMelbourne. Mike Heald

Dream ofa Literature Tutor(after Robert Gray) Figures racing to the university; They enter the expedient faculties Flumane as William Shakespeare... Philip Mannes To all those students in my Maths I tutorials, I'djustlike to say how pleased I am to have been able to get to know so many of you, share somejokes and have some fun in class. Thanks to those of you that have shared my sometimes strange sense of humour and made Maths more bearable for all ofus! I'd like to wish you every success in your lives post-Trinity and I do hope some ofyou can find time during your university studies to visit us here at Swanston Street. You may be gone, but definitely not forgotten!! Richard Pannel

Who wants to be a millionaire? Well,as the song goes on,"I do!"Not that being a teacher at Trinity is going to make me one,or is it? There are many kinds ofwealth. I believe in Japan, we Australians are known as the millionaires ofspace. In the words ofJohn Shaw Neilson(to quote from a poem I like to do with my students),"My wealth, it is in the glow that lives forever in the young". When I see that glow with every new intake that arrives at Trinity, I know I am already a millionaire. With love to you all. Ron Bell

It will be quite a while before I forget this year's February group. Whether it was role playing Red Guards in the Chinese Cultural Revolution(during which I was attacked as a Cow Demon and Snake Spirit), or designing propaganda for a Nazi Party("Vote one Ron Bell for Fuhrer!"), my class always showed great enthusiasm and high spirits. But, without a doubt, the highlight ofthe year was the Slave Auction. She was a gentle slave mistress, but I was compelled to carry her shoulder bag(in the shape ofthe fluffy lamb from Wallace and Gromit)throughout the day. But it was worth it. My embarrassment helped pay for this Student Yearbook!

(No, not World Wide Web...Wise Words of Wisdom!!!)

Rosemary Dansick...

I was one ofthe small group ofpeople who set up the Foundation Studies Program in the first year- 1990. It was a great challenge. Now that the program is well established, what I still enjoy the most is to work with the students. My favourite time ofthe year is between the Mono logue assessment and the Group Devised performance, as 1 like to see the students develop their skills and their confidence. It's very rewarding. Roseanne Misajon...

While I have only been working here for a short while,I've found the students as a whole to be great! Most are friendly, considerate, and eager to excel. The staffmembers I have met are all crazy, which helps create an atmosphere conducive to both work and ftin. Sasha Cyganowski...

Teaching Foundation Studies students at Trinity has been very rewarding for me as I enjoy meeting people from different countries and backgrounds. Thank you to all the wonderful stu dents who have shared a piece oftheir culture with me,and I wish you all the best with your future studies.

Simon Wilkinson...

It has been a great pleasure to get to know many of you. I wish you well for your future study and hope to run into you walking through the uni sometime. Enjoy reading this yearbook, keep it safe, and as people often do with good cherished memories, take it out from time to time and smile, remembering your time at Trinity. Tamar Lewit...

Is there one last piece ofadvice, which Auntie Tamar can give? Yes! Make good friends at Uni- with Australian students. It may not be easy, but that's what you're here for: To be part ofan international group ofpeople who know, understand and communicate with each another. You've been a fantastic group and I'll miss you so much. Good luck and love from Tamar.

(No, not World Wide Web...Wise Words of Wisdom!!!) Gloria Lew

A big hello to all at Trinity. It has always been a highlight of my week when I come to Trinity. The staff in the Psychology Department are wonderful to work with and we always manage to come up with special and innovative ideas for the students. This is probably why Psychology students are often challenged to think in new ways. It's possible to incorporate instruction with FUN.

Here's a sampler: Which of these would you classify as aggressive behaviour? 1. A spider eats a fly. 2. A soldier shoots an enemy at the front line. 3. A girl kicks a rubbish bin. 4. Two men fight for a piece of bread. 5. A person viciously kicks a cat. The students at Trinity are highly motivated to do well. I have always found them to be

pleasant, courteous and deeply respectful. There is a genuine community of learning and sharing and striving together. There are many memories that I will always carry of the friendships and involvement asso ciated with Trinity. Warm regards to all. Gina Moors

I really enjoy teaching at Trinity Foundation Studies Program, where the kids are simply cool. Enough said! Thanks, and A7^A7>. Janusz Sysak

It's a real pleasure teaching at Trinity. Our students are so intelligent, courteous and fun to be with. It's often said that teachers learn a lot from their students( in a multitude of ways ). I certainly have learnt a lot from teaching all of you while never ceasing to also have a great time. Jo Wilson

During my years at Trinity I must say I have never come across such a bunch of rat bags. Late for class, cheeky, you all laugh way too much and seem to see life as an experience to enjoy. What can I say? RAT BAGS ARE OKAY! Don't ever be too good Kerry Higgins

Students entering the Trinity Foundation Studies Program tend to be motivated and eager to do well in their studies, and this makes teaching a pleasure. Some students enter the course with weak English skills, and consequently low confidence in their abilities, and it is fantastic to see over the course ofjust one year, such an incredible improvement in language skills and the increase in self confidence that comes with this.

Monica Broeksteeg

I hope that your efforts here at Trinity will be richly rewarded with a successful transition into the Australian University life. And I hope that you will have fond memories of your year spent here at Trinity, as part ofa talented, hardworking,close-knit intake ofstudents. Best wishes for the future!

Message from the President and Vice-President

Dearest Friends,

This year has been absolutely amazing and we have you,our fellow students and friends to thank. Throughout this year, we have had the pleasure of working with you, sharing laughter and tears, success and failures; and most importantly, serving you as your student voice. That,in itself has been a great honour. So on behalfofthe FSP Student Committee 2000, we would like to

express our heartfelt gratitude to you for being such wonderful friends and making this year memorable and flin for all. As you are all probably aware ofby now,the student committee this year is made up ofthe representatives from all intakes,i.e. February,Fast Track,July and September. Our responsibilities ofbeing part ofthe committee have greatly increased because we serve not only our own intakes but also all the others. We have to admit that it has been hard work, but we have never regretted making that choice. Being part ofthis committee has been a really good learning experience for us. It has made us realise that our reward comes not from gaining recognition for what we have done or achieved, but in knowing that our hard work is appreciated and that the events that we organ ised were well received. The response and feedback that we have received makes it worthwhile. We hope we've not let you down and have helped make a difference in you year at Trinity. When we first started here, at Trinity, we knew that this year will be both challenging and rewarding. Reflecting back on the year now, we suddenly realise how far we've come; the challenges we've overcome; the opportunities that have come our way, the sweet taste of success when our hard work paid off and especially the friendships that we've made. Now everywhere we turn, we see a familiar face, everywhere we look, we'll find a comforting hand, offering support and motivation. We've all made it through because we had each other. Hopefully this is the beginning of beautiful and lasting friendships. The time has come to bid farewell to this chapter of our lives. We personally don't like saying goodbyes much, but then again, "all good things must come to an end"... and every ending marks a new beginning. We wish you every success in the years ahead and may god be with you every step of the way. Once again we would like to thank you for the honour ofbeing your representatives. Yours Sincerely, Hans and Elaine

In the past years, different intakes ofthe Foundation Studies Program, each had their own student committee.

This year, a new concept and challenge has been undertaken. The committee is now made up ofstudents from all different intakes, i.e. February,July and Fast Track. This new structure allows the committee to plan and organize activities for all the students from the different intakes, thus allowing them to participate together and permitting the mingling ofstudents from the entire college. There are five necessary traits required to be a member ofthe Student Committee. They are leadership, responsibility, commitment, effectiveness and most importantly teamwork. Even though each member holds a different position, everyone shares the common responsibility ofthe Student Committee. Everyone helps and contributes towards one common goal: to make Trinity a'home away from home'for all the students. The Student Committee started the year by hosting a pool competition. The competition that was held in

Charlton was a huge success. Not only was there a large number ofentries for the competition, many students also turned up on the day of the competition to cheer for the participants. The next activity that was held was the Friendship Tri-Day and Slave Day. The Friendship Tri-Day was aimed to celebrate the new friendships that have been fostered over the year. Both the Friendship Tri-Day and the Slave Day were fund raising events. The last activity ofthe year and the one event that everyone has waited for with much anticipation is the Trinity Ball 2000. The theme for this year's ball is 'Celestial Serenade It is the time ofthe year when students get to dress up in their Sunday best - or now-a-days, it's more like Oscar best-forget all the academic work and simply sit back, relax and enjoy the company oftheir fellow students.

Congratulations and Thanks to Trinity Students from Culture Link Congratulations Congratulations to all graduating and recently graduated students at Trinity. We hope that you are now a step closer to your dreams. To do what you have in a foreign country in a second or third language is a great achievement of which you should feel very proud. Orientation Week The Orientation Week which started from 21 to 25^ ofFebruary was the beginning ofour experience at Trinity College. Coming to a new country and getting into a new school could be really overwhelming ifthen we're forced to study in a strange environment,so the Orientation Week was a good way to get us familiar with Trinity and its surroundings. On the first day after all the registering hazzles, students were warmly welcomed by Trinity staffat the Bulpadock, and then continued with a tour around Trinity. We were divided into groups and each group was led by a former Trinity student. Since its purpose was to show us all the Trinity buildings scattered all the way from Royal Parade to Swanston St.-the tour was quite confusing! During the Orientation Week,we also had to start considering the subjects we wanted to take. An introductory lecture was held for each subject, so students could gain more information about the subjects they were interested in. Besides all the confusion ofsubject-choosing and memorizing the locations ofTrinity buildings, there were also fun sessions such as BBQ lunch at Bulpadock and welcome dance party at the end ofthe week, where we could get to know more and more friends. Trinity had put on their best effort to make us feel welcomed and comfortable in our new environment.

Overall, Orientation Week is a great way to introduce us to our new school, teachers and friends,so that we can settle down and start our adventure at Trinity.

Trinity Residential Camp The Trinity Residential Camp(24TH -30TH APRIL)

During Orientation at the beginning ofthe year, we were told that there would be a camp some time in April. As it was still a long way to go,nobody really bothered about it until a week before camp. The camp group lists were put up and there were cries ofagony as well as shouts ofjoy. Some people were naturally upset that they were placed in different groups from their close friends, while others were simply overjoyed as they were placed with their "groupies". However, the objective ofthis camp was to make MORE new friends,so attempts ofchanging groups were denied no matter how great their excuses were. At an ungodly hour ofthe 24th morning,we slowly made our way to the Trinity grounds. It was a truly amazing sight. Some people chattered excitedly as they struggled to carry their bags,or rather luggage across the Bulpadock. Some had like three to four mini bags, paper bags, while others(majority ofthe guys)simply carried a sports bag. When we were all gathered in the dining hall, we were given our room keys respectively. Again there were groans as many ofus were unfortunate enough to be placed in different buildings from our friends. However, changing rooms was an absolute NO NO says Joanna...but did we listen?!! *smile*

Our activities varied from Sports and Recreation,to Cooking and Nutrition,as well as EAP lessons! But it was so enjoyable that we did not even have time to complain. We were kept busy busy busy the entire day! Well, ofcourse the highlight ofthe camp was the Big Noise Session. It was really enjoyable as most of us never thought we could beat drums and sing like we did. Some ofus even got to learn a little African. It was truly .... AMAZING!! Meal times weren't what we really expected. We had to eat what the previous group made for Cooking and Nutrition!! Most ofus did not know what we were eating actually, but when our tummies were complaining, how can we?! And besides,if we don't eat, there's a high chance ofstarving. And so, we gobbled down whatever that was served, while the "cooks" looked on ... without a single trace of appetite. We wondered why! Behind the scenes in the large kitchen, the student hosts as well as a few teachers who, more often than not, hadn't the faintest idea on how to cook or bake

#b helped and instructed students on cooking techniques. Not all food was bad though. The chefs ofthose yummy biscuits, muffins, and sushi(mmm!!)actually deserve some credit for the wonderful turnout in which most students and teachers enjoyed. Needless to say, not many students looked forward to those EAP lessons. Who wants to study English(or so we thought)on a so-called holiday?? However,it turned out rather well. As a result ofthe clever way the lessons were organised, most students had the opportunity to make new friends from various parts ofthe world through the self-interview activity. Many even left the Buzzard Lecture Theatre chatting happily away with their new-found fnends.

Trinity Residential Camp One of the most fun bits of the camp was undoubtedly the LATIN DANCING !! Through all the squeals and giggles ofthe girls as well as the whispers and teasing amongst the blushing boys, the participants actually managed to master some dance moves taught by Paul, the groovy instructor ?. Over an hour later, most students and teachers were grooving to the music like pros! Even Paul was impressed. The sports curriculum was the chance for us lazy bums to FINALLY get some exercise. The activities featured were soccer (favoured by whom else but Trinity's very own machoists... :> ... who live by their 'Eat Soccer, Breathe Soccer, Live Soccer' principle), yoga -favoured by the young ladies of the camp, meditation (apparently even this was tiring!), and kung fu (hai yaaaaa!!!!! =I>). All were equally fun and refreshing, but many will agree that after that workout, there's nothing better than a nice hot bath and a warm, comfy bed. Aaaaahhhhhh

zzZzzzZZZzzZzzz

As for the Big Noise - well, lets just say that it really lives up to its name. All the singing, dancing and drum-beating would just sound like noise if it weren't for the steady rhythm kept by Valanga Khoza, the talented Big Noise coordinator and teddy bear of the camp. After all the hullabaloo, Valanga soothed the atmosphere with the sweet melodies from his guitar and his animated voice. His gifted disposition was met by applause from his awed listeners, and rightly so. On the final day ofcamp, the College somehow managed to drag over a hundred students on a field trip to the Great Ocean Road. As keen as we were, waking up by 7am nearly crushed our spirits a bit. We were to be in the dining hall around 7, return our keys, grab a quick bite of breakfast, and off we go. Therefore, SLEEP - BREAKFAST = MORE SLEEP!! This explains why there were so many missing souls during breakfast! *smile* But as tough as it may be, we all got ourselves into the bus on time, and contin ued our journey of snooze from there. The seemingly never-ending bus ride took around 2 hours before we finally reached Queenscliff. Most ofus got down from the bus,and saw the first light ofthe day! *grin* As sleepy as we were, the little town was too much to take a pass on...so we dragged ourselves down from the bus,and took a walk around.

Our next stop was bush walking with an aborigine tour guide. That was something both worth and not worth missing. The weather was hot and humid. We were sweating profusely, the sun was blinding, and we had to walk up hill and down hill! Gosh...talk about exercise!!!! But it was all worth it as we were told so much about the aborigines. A truly informative session indeed!!

The highlight of the day was probably the journey along the Great Ocean Road and our last stop at Lome. The crystal clear water made us feel like jumping in to splash around and enjoy the cool waters. It was indeed a sunny day and we were all tired from the long journey. Most of us went our separate ways as we each explored on our own every nook and comer of the beach, feeling the tingling sensation of the soft, almost silk-like sand on our bare feet. It was the most wonderful experience. Of course we were busy snap ping photos as well...who would miss out on the most spectacular view? But all good things have to come to and end, as we slowly made our way back to the bus,

Trinity Residential Camp both glad and heavy-hearted at the same time,to leave. On our way back to Trinity, we watched the videotape recorded over the past three days, and ofcourse, most of us caught up with our best mates-our sleep!!I => The three days have indeed drained every ounce ofenergy left in each and everyone ofus. But,be it good or bad memories, this camp shall feature a rather significant chapter in our lives. As we move on,reminiscence ofthis camp will always be etched in our memories. It was a most wonderful experience. Thanks,Trinity!!

Autumn & Spring Music Concert AUTUMN MUSIC CONCERT

The Music Club organises a music concert every year in conjunction with the autumn season. This year was no different. After ample arrangements, the Autumn Music Concert was held on Thursday, 18 May 2000,during lunchtime hour, at the Old Pathology Lecture Theatre. Many students attended the event which was presented by Trinity Music Club, to see their fnends and fellow students singing and playing musical instruments with the best oftheir talents. The concert had six performances altogether. There were students who performed solo, such as Joyce Sing who played the song Colours ofthe Wind and Lim Mei Sze with Sunny, both on piano. There was also a duet performance by Gina Yang and Karen Wong with their flute and piano, playing the song Reflections from Walt Disney's animated movie Mulan. The songs sung by the choir, were 'La Bamba', an Italian hip-hop song, an oldie,'Smile' and a chirpy song called 'The Surrey with the Fringe on Top'. The guitar, keyboard, piano and xylo phone accompanied cheerfiil voices with matching harmonies. There were also solo perform ances from two very talented pianists and a gifted flute player. Although the concert lasted for only about halfan hour, the audience and the performers enjoyed themselves immensely. As a whole, the Autumn Music Concert was a creative way to show offour students' musical talents and the concert was an overall success.

SPRING MUSIC CONCERT

The Music Group has done it again! After a wonderful demonstration of musical talent in a concert last autumn, this melodious bunch, under the guidance of Janusz Sysak and Felic ity Fallon, has once again proved their abilities in the Spring Music Concert, held on the 10"" of October 2000.

"Yesterday...all my troubles seem so far away...". That was how the concert kicked off. Accompanied by Asuka Nakao on piano and Trinity's very own student committee presi dent, Hans Surya on guitar, the Music Group successfully presented this nostalgic (for some!) piece by the famous Beatles. The teachers especially enjoyed this part of the performance as it gave them a break from "I want it that way... Freestyler.. *phew*. Next up, the audience were serenaded with 'Fly Me To The Moon', which was a fairly slow piece. Surprisingly, the audience did not fall asleep, simply because the production was thumbs up! After all the singing, it was a nice touch having solo performances by Daniel Ng (on guitar), Gina Yang (on flute), and Asuka Nakao (on piano) to soothe the mood. It gave the audience a chance to kick back and relaxxxxxx

The concert concluded with the lively group back in sing-song mode, braving all odds of embarrassment by la-la-la-ing 'If I Love You' in French!! And lastly... the grand finale... the all-famous 'More Than Words'. Aaahhh... the perfect conclusion, for the Music Group's outstanding performance proved that music does speak louder than words. Congratulations, you all did an excellent job!

6-a-side Soccer Competition Friday, 23rd of June, the much-awaited Soccer Competition was held. STUDENTS Vs. TEACH ERS! It was a 6-a-side match, but that was more than enough as all the soccer freaks were overly geared up to score some goals. Clad in their respective jerseys ofboth blue and red, they played their very best. Teachers panting away...due to the age factor(Hey...it's true! See how many ofthem mentioned "old men"?!), and the aggressive students, most obviously went all out to put their teachers to shame. The editorial team had the pleasure of interviewing some of the teachers and students. Here's what they have to say. Glen Jennings says...V>/e were very pleased with the organisation of the tournament and the spirit of the competition. Everyone had fun, some great goals were scored, and we even had spectacular penalty-saves. The teachers look forward to the opportunity of playing against students in future games, and we're keen to field our strongest squad including a goal-hungry unit of women. The Editorial Team says... Well Glen..in this best of all possible worlds, anything is sufficiently possible! *wink* Doesn't this sound familiar? Hmm...

Simon Wilkinson says... The game was played with a great deal ofenthusiasm, particularly for the staff team. We had nothing much else but enthusiasm. My feelings on the match was that the staff came together excep tionally well to produce our best result yet, THIRD. Well done "Old Man United"! The Editorial Team 5ay5...Well, good ole' enthusiastic Old Man United... better luck next time...The stu dents are out to get you guys!! Neh neh neh neh neh Hehe.. Richard Finch says... All the staff had a great time playing the six-a-side competition, although we were disappointed that we lost. Next time, we intend to win it. *griN* Up the old men! The Editorial Team 5ay5'...Awwww...We're pretty sure that the students are disappointed for you guys as well. We sympathise on your behalf...Poor old men...It's time to retire, and declare us students champs.,.yes? Mike Heald says...Even despite niggling ankle pain, preventing my more balletic moves,I thoroughly enjoyed the six-a-side experience. Many thanks to Ashok for a tournament which left the staff team wondering what might have been, and the student grateful for what was... The Editorial Team sav^...Three Cheers for Mike! You're the only one who did not mention about the age factor! So much for feeling and looking young aye, Mike?! *grin* Oh...we'll try to organise a ballet compe tition next, seeing your keen enthusiasm...you'll participate won't you?

Stephan Faubel 5av^...The six-a-side tournament turned out to be a hell of a lot of fun for Old Man United. We lived up to our name in that by the conclusion ofthe last game we were showing the weary signs of age, but we were united in our enjoyment of trying to match it with the younger brigade. On a personal level I leamt a valuable lesson in my one attempt at playing goalkeeper. It is better to stand still and let the ball find you than attempt to dive this way and that and end up missing the ball completely. The Editorial Team says...On behalfofthe students, the Editorial Team would like to urge Stephan to become

the goalkeeper in upcoming competitions. How many goals did you let fly by you Steph? *grin* Claudio Bozzi 5a>'5...0ld Man United somehow melded into a unite, despite problems and issues of cultural diversity-Australians, English men and Italians,so said the experts, would prove too volatile a combination on the same side. Despite Old Man United missing two penalties (I was one of the culprits), the other side buckled and missed three. *snigger* WISDOM PREVAILED. And minds used to pondering deeply, and

looking behind the surface reality oriented their bodies to the immediate situation and hustled, grappled and puffed their way to some decent results. The Editorial Team jflyi...Well Claudio, Congratulations on being one of the culprits to miss a penalty. Hehe...that explains the DECENT RESULTS yea? And...wisdom = soccer? Neh.. we don't think so!

Jevon Wong ..( On behalf of his team. Gang Bang Six, which consists of team-mates Tommy, Tomy, Firdaus, Ezekiel, and Thin Yaw)The feeling of victory is definitely very satisfying and delightful. Playing in this 6-A-Side Soccer competition was just to relax ourselves after weeks of studying, Winning was not the main aim but we did have much confidence in doing so. Credits should go to all my team-mates who have contributed greatly and played to the best of their ability throughout this toumament.

The Editorial Team says...Well, well...we are certainly proud of you guys, but are you sure that you didn't intend to put Old Man United to shame?! *smile* We're pretty sure that getting back at those "homework-givers" was intended right from the start. Hehe...Way to go guys! =)

Soccer Tournament The Trinity College Soccer Carnival was organized by the College's Soccer Club. It was held on the S"' and 6'^ of August 2000, with 8 teams in the competition -4 teams from the February Intake, one from the July Intake, a teacher's team, an ex-Trinity team and a spirited girls team. It was a rather wonderful atmosphere to see these powerful groups battle for the championship - a fight till the end!

The weather on both days were just right- a pleasurable 16°C with a mild breeze. All the players were ready to display their skills. The teachers were also willing to prove that age was NOT a barrier when it came to technique. Decked in bright yellow jerseys, the girls were more than eager to dominate the wonderful world ofsports. And,to tell the truth, they really proved their worth. All teams exhibited great sportsmanship and showed what clean soccer was all about.

Four teams qualified for the semi-finals, and the team captained by Ong Jee Jen proved that they were above all by beating the Dutch Juniors, captained by Ashok, in the final with the score 2-1. The teachers almost qualified for the final, but lost in the sudden death penalty shootout. Ex-Trinitians settled for 3"^ place affer the teachers pulled out due to unfortunate

injury problems for 3'"^ and 4'^ placing.

After two days of soccer, three players were chosen as the best in 3 categories- Ashok as the top scorer with 6 GOALS!!! ... Shiva from the July Intake as the best goalkeeper ofthe toumament, and Ezekiel as the most outstanding player, thus proving himself as the master of skills and technique.

Special acknowledgement to Joanna, Michelle, Glen, Ashok, Alvin and everyone else who helped to organize this toumament and made it such a huge success with their endearing patience and support-THANK YOU I!!

Enjoy SOCCER. Enjoy LIFE.

Tri-Friendship Day & Slave Day Between the 23"* and 25''' of August, the students of Trinity Foundation Studies Program celebrated Friendship Day and Slave Day. In organizing this event, the stu dent committee and yearbook committee hoped that friendships would be renewed and strengthened. In a foreign country, friends are important, as we are away from our families. Friendship Day was the day to remember the important role friends play in our lives and to reaffirm this friendship.

During the three days, flowers and sweets were sent from friend to friend. Cards telling people that they had someone who appreciated them were also received. It was indeed a heart-warming scene ... well I think it was. Slave day was held in conjunction with the three friendship days. On the first friendship day, the slave day 'auction' was held. Slaves were bought at this auction. Our teachers were sporting enough to be held as slaves. It was a comical and heartening scene seeing Mr Luigi Soccio trying his best to lure students to buy him. He tried to entice potential buyers by giving them benefits if they were to buy him. Well some students were enticed enough to bid for him. How ever, he bought himself out of the deal. The highest bid for the day was by a July-Fast Track student, for the pairing of Yosuke and Yen Yee. The bid was an astonishing 250 Aussie dollars ... well I thought it was a waste of money, but since it was going into the fund of both committees, I am not complaining. On the third friendship day, the Slave Day BBQ was held, where slaves and their masters came and had lunch. That was the day that the slaves were supposed to perform whatever task their masters assigned to them. Fortunately, most tasks set up by the masters were merely embarrassing ... no kinky task were reported to be done ... but then again, who knows?

Overall, Slave Day and the Tri-Friendship Day was a success. Thank you to all the students and teachers who made it a success.

Celestial Serenade Glitz and glamour, slim and sexy dresses, to tiny shorts. Hugo Bosses to Armanis, they were ail there. No doubt, the Trinity College Foundation Studies Program Prom Nite was a huge success! Celestial ... indeed it was. For the first time in the whole year, everyone was properly dressed! (Vast difference from the usual torn jeans and sweaters!) It was a night worth recollecting, replaying and penned down into the special pages in our diary, and that's exactly what I am doing now.

Opening the night was a welcome message by Mr. Prest, our Director, then it was time for us to dig in to our entree. However, it was the guys who were enjoying themselves, eating merrily, without even giving a thought for their female counterparts, who were all having difficulty trying to enjoy their food and worrying about their lipstick at the same time. But, we did enjoy the food, then making a dash to the ladies after that. It was packed. Seriously, the ladies room was packed!

Next up, we had Timothy reciting a poem written by Jonathan. Then Gavin serenaded us with a self-composed song entitled Friendship. Hmm ... and we wonder when his first album is going to be out in the market! *grin* Way to go Gavin! Joanna was next on the list, she recited a poem which she gave the title Celestial Friendship.( Very original indeed Joanna!)

Did anyone realize that we actually have an A Capella group in Trinity? Yup ... we do! They did their second performance on the night itself, but first ever appearance on stage in Melbourne, and they did a fantastic job indeed. Their number was dedicated specially to all the girls in Trinity, but 1 doubt it. However, it was a performance worth listening to. After being entertained, we were given a chance to entertain ourselves. Yup,time to dance. We hit the dance floor with much enthusiasm...and did our version ofcha cha, rhumba, samba, and whatever

moves we could think of. And can you imagine the DJ actually played Techno music?! Like, hello ... how are we (girls I mean..) supposed to dance to that, in our puffy dresses? That was my only com plain

The other highlight of the night was Han's and Elaine's speech." A good speech is like a miniskirt, long enough to cover, short enough to be interesting ..." That was exactly what Hans said, but he lifted that offhis fnend's BAP presentation.(Sorry Hans ... but you did!!!) Elaine however, failed to thank us( Sorry Elaine ... now you know who's writing this..) but we didn't mind one bit.(Yea ... right!) All in all, their speeches were well delivered, and thereafter followed by another session of Techno dancing.(1 don't have to complain again, do 1?) Before the night officially ended, the night's Best Dressed Male and Female, Prom King and Prom Queen was announced. Congratulations to Fanny and Brian Nicholas who won the best dressed, and Shiva and Yunita who won the Prom King and Prom Queen respectively.

The night ended with satisfied grins and smiles but not satisfied stomach for most of us. Yes, some of us actually missed the main course in the process of snapping photographs! All good things have to come to an end ... and sad to say, the Celestial Serenade at Lincoln of Toorak had to come to an end as well. But do you guys think we had enough? Of course not ... we went our own ways ... partying hard till the next morning, and realized what a great time we had the night before. Congratula tions to the student committee for hosting such a wonderful event. We wish everyone all the best, and hopefully, this will be one ofthe best proms you will ever have!

COOKING CLUB

Surprise...surprise!! There is a Cooking Club in Trinity College. Isn't this fantastic? This means that most of the students would get a chance to brush up their cooking skills from home. And even more surprise, more than 50% of the members are...*drumroll*....GUYS!! Yup..we got that right, this is no typo error. It was strange at first seeing all those eager faces ofthe guys, waiting to put their culinary skills into test. The girls on the other hand was a bit shy, and not to mention stressed out, as they do not want to appear less skillful than their male counterparts! *smilc*

Our first mission - mess up Leigh's kitchen. Yup,that was where we went for our first ever cooking experi ence in an Australian kitchen. It was strange at first, we didn't know where everything was, we were shy ofcourse, but after a few minutes of so, we were practically wrecking her kitchen, sending her into fits, then giving up on us. But, at the end of the day, we managed to produce pizza, rice, chicken and stir fried vegetables...or so we thought. No doubt, no other teachers wanted us in their kitchens anymore, but Dale and Sara were kind and of course,

BRAVE enough, to have us in theirs. We tried to be more cautious this time, not repeating what we did at Leigh's place, but you guessed it right, we wrecked their kitchens once again. Dale hit the ceiling, while Sara went totally

nuts! Nehhh...they were great...too patient with us^tually,^and helped us pull through what we thought was spaghetti marinara, carbonara, and chocolate cake. ■ p, i * What did we learn from this chaotic experience?? tb'4^ok many wonderful dishes of course! Apart from learning how to wreck typical suburban kitchens, we have definitely acquired the cooking skills we need to pull us through 4 years of independent life, without Mummy's cooking. Go Cooking Club go!! LATIN DANCE CLUB

Rhumba, cha cha,samba

these are among t^e few dances that we, Latin dance students, have learnt

from the Latin dance classes held every Sunday moming^wan Burge. Personally, 1 think that the hardest part was having to wake up early as the first lesson begins at 10 o'clock. Mowever it was really worth losing some sleep every Sunday morning as we got to learn a new type of dance and to ourselves at the same time. Latin dancing was first introduced during the April residential camp and since it i^ceivcd a good response from the students. Trinity decided to conduct a class. Student Services hired a profe^onal Latin dancing teacher Paul J. Zaidman from Zaidmans Dance Club and he charges $20 for five les:K>ns. Paul started the lesson by lining the guys and girls in rows facing each other. He would then stand in the

middle where everybody could get a clear view and g^sthrough the steps one at a time. When he was sure that we could go through the whole dance by ourselves, he \\^idd put the music on, get the girls and guys to find a partner and let us dance to the music(yuck

we actually hdd to touch c^sh other, but after a while it wasn't that bad after

all). By the third term,Paul finally decided that we \4^^;pi:ogressiag well enough to take a Latin Dance exam. Even

though the exams were approaching, it did not spoil the enthusiasiri'^the keen Latin dancers as it is a stress-free activity and there wasn't much theory involved. Currently, we are still preparing for the exam so wish us the best of luck.

MOVIE CLUB

Gladiator .... The Talented Mr. Ripley... Gladiator ....Hurricane .... Frequency .... Yup .... you got it right, we are the movie club, and what do we do? Watch movies what, else???!! *duh* The club was established with the help of Joanna, and a few February intake students. We get together once a week, discuss or rather fight over what we want to watch, and finally, after many heated arguments, disgusted looks, and deadly threats, we settle on a movie to watch. Well, you get the big picture right? Our next big event was the Oscar night, obviously held on the night ofthe Oscars. We had pizza, popcorn, chips, and basically pigged out. But on top of that, we had loads offun, betting on our favourite actors and actresses to win.

Third term kicked off with a welcome party to the July and Fast Track intake students. Once again, it was pizza pig out time while we watched Frequency. All in all. Movie Club was a huge success while it lasted, and not mentioning our non existent membership card.( Hey.,.at least it was created on computer.,.just not printed!!) Well, we wish all our members(those who think they still are..) and ex members, all the best in life, and best wishes. Viva La Movies!-!

TENNIS CLUB

Think Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Anna Koumikova, and Martina Hingis. Wat do you get? You got it..TENNIS! But here in Trinity, think Barbara Trauer because she's the leader of the Tennis Club.

This year, we have a couple of times, all thanks to Barbara, for organizing the courts at The University of Melbourne. The competition we had was fast and hard, but wth sweat pouring off us, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

We just want to thank Barbara, and everyone who made the games feel like Wimbledon.

TRINITY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP(TCF)

It has been asked of me on many occasicms,"What is TCF?". Trinity Christian Fellow

ship OS a non-denomomiational Christian fdlowsli^' who meet on Tuesdays at lunchtime in the Recreation room. We bring our lunch .^aid discuss how our lives are going. With home being so far away and stress mounting di ^fudents we often talk and pray about issues that concern us. All the students feel a sense of connectedness and the support that they find in their faith is wonderful to see. A big thank you tb all students involved in attending TCF,warmest wishes for your future studies.-Simon Wilkinson,TCF Supervisor

DEBATING CLUB

FSP Debating Club is acknowledged ^'be anpdeal activity for those interested in de veloping communication skills. The group is also open to everyone who is interested in con

troversial issues: political, social, moral etc. They may take part as a debater or as a member of the audience. The debating club hope-» ro integrate both brains and the art of speech. We believe that debating is still an essential part of an all round liberal education. The Debating Club also holds training sessions every Thi^dayi^! in the Buzzard Lecture Theatre, Evan Burge Building, which are opdiTo all. Committee members: Sigrid Chan, Melinda Kusuma, Sam San San, Stella Tan Convenors: Richard Pannel, Kgotso GREEN TEAM

The Green Team is in its first year of life and has started work towards its aim of making Trinity a more environmentally friendly place. Students and staff interested in the "greening" ofthe FSP havejoined with students from the Environment and Development elective to get some activities up and running. Thanks to a research project done by the E&D.studeiUs from the last July Intake, we had

a well of documented re|Ki#oh how much paper wd use <m the FSP and what type of trees are used to make the paper. We were surprised to learn that we use about 258 reems a month (that's

a lot!) and that the paper comes from Victorian forest trees ffi Gippste||fl. We therefore investi gated more envftonmentally friendly alternatives and a proposalil'iBient d the administration

suggesting the FSP use paper and paper made from^plantation trees. The proposal was success ful and so now fhe FSP us^ a more environmentally sound paper, "Green Band". This is a great change and will save many forest tr^s in the long term. The FSP compost was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her

Australian tour earlier this year. The soil produced from the compost is being used in the FSP vegetable garden(around the rec. room). The garden bedsfrave been prepared, the seeds planted

and most have come up. We are now protecting the vegetables from hungry Trinity possums and snails (organically of course!) and hope to have a good harvest in the summer. A recycling paper project is also in progress which aims to collect and recycle all waste paper from classrooms and computer labs in the FSP. Little by little the FSP is tuming green ... if you would like to help come and join us!

A long time it has been, Since I have last seen; The town where I was bom, The town I grew up in. Amidstthe darkness . ;; W ofa ship's cabin, ; ; ' I sat in bitter lonelin^;;

k

Unaware ofthe fears Ifaced.

But most of all I remember, The hawker stalls and coffee shops, At everyone's convenierKre for a stop; Here we get our local favourites, Laksa. Popiah, Char Koay Teow, Rojak, Ais Kacang and Hokkein Mee; All cheap and good, To suit your every mood.

While outside

the dark clouds hover, As the winds howl, And the thunder growls; But I was comforted at the thought, OfPenang awaiting at tiie next port.

I remember very cleaiiy, The island that I miss so dearly; Surrounded by the calm blue seas, Penang,Penang,with gentle breeze;

With so much beauty in all its places. ;It can't help but draw admiring gaz« •»» Downtown,Gecxgetown, Where the bustle never ends, And excitement awaits at every bend; I Krring! Krring! Pon!Pen! Go the bicycle bells, :;

1

And the trishaws homs;

Suddoily, "Ahoy,Land ho!Land ho!" The captain cries; I realise I have finally returned home,; ; Home to the land where I was born, Home to the land I grew up in; As the ship ichors, The clouds parted;

As ifto welcome my return; r :; Return to the land where I belong; Return to the land that I so longed; Penang,Penang!Ch wonderful Penang!

We're bound to meet a familiar face.

Fire In Your Heart

"Lai, lai fresh fish! Very Cheap today?"l "Only two dollars!" Go the fish monger; 'Today's special, two kilos. Seven dollars!" "Hey! Here only five dollars lah!" Go the poultry sellers; But above this din we still hear. The gossips ofthe old-wives tales. Av-^y from this hustle, Stands a jungle so serene and beautiful; With all the flowers blooming full, And shades ofgreen all year round; Plenty to explore, Plenty to be found; All around we hear these sounds,

Chattering monkeys on the trees, And slithering sndces on the ground Chirping birds flying free, Flying carefree throt^i the trees.

Are you feeling Ic^ and alone today, And it feels like all hope has faded away? Maybe your dreams or your love wentso wrong. That your heart feels too broken to cany on? You've gotso many problems in your head, ri You think you'll be better offsomewhere in^iead But first listen to what I've got to say, myfriend. Forthe battle can never be over until you r^ch ycsarend Look at the heavens, you can still see the sun shining, So why are you still misaaWe and ycxir ^irit sighing? You've got to summon the courage witlm your soul, Only dien can you reach your ultimate goal. So please don't give up the fight just yet.

Remind yourself ofthe good memories Ix^fore you fcMget.
