Some years on, I realized that Casa 21 needed a makeover and a new image. As an interior designer in Paris, I thought I had been too cautious with the first project.

I remembered how, 30 years ago, I rented an all-black house in Corsica and thinking that someday, when I was older, I would make one for myself. My dream and that of my wife and my family came true.

The need for life, freedom, madness and carelessness. Houses are alive to attract, welcome and please. A house must be able to adapt, to surprise, to be cozy or festive to celebrate. It must adapt to different lifestyles: that of a family, or friends, or people who are passing through.

I wanted set aside my work, my customs, my know-how, my creations, and let myself be carried away by a professional who knew how to listen, suggest, and so I chose interior decorator Christelle Dubreuil Chambardel, from Arte and Cosas (Plaza El Paseo) to look after the renewal of Casa 21.

Very often, when people arrive, I see their first glance and it makes me happy. Casa 21 was designed and built for this reason, to make visitors feel good.

Why a black house? The people around me were very skeptical. And of course that made me feel better.

Inside the exclusive residential complex Bonita Village, 300 m from Las Ballenas beach, overlooking several spectacular landscapes: the bay of Cosón, Playa Bonita, the green hills of Las Terrenas.

Introduction

My name is Guillaume, I’m 48, and married to Marine who arrived with me 18 years ago, father of two children born in San Francisco de Macorís and Santo Domingo. I am French and I became French-Dominican and then Dominican-French 18 years ago. I am currently the manager of Hogar Design, a company dedicated to importing modular kitchens from Europe, and soon, many more things, but we’ll get back to that later.

Discovering Las Terrenas

The first time I came here was to visit a friend for a week in November 2003. A week of rain, gray skies and murky seas. Staying in Cosón, all my trips to and from the village were made through torrential rain and mud because the roads weren’t paved back then. Despite the weather conditions we loved the village. Six months later, we were back and this time it was sunshine, blue skies, turquoise sea, unspoiled beaches... paradise!

It was a chance to discover the surroundings and fall even more in love with this town 8,000 km from our roots. The month passed very quickly and when we got on the plane, we couldn’t hold back the tears. The return to France was complicated even though summer was just around the corner. We couldn’t stop thinking about back in the Dominican Republic and, more specifically, Las Terrenas. Summer passed quickly among friends and family; autumn arrived, and winter was already looming. It was unbearable. Our minds were dwelling on the beaches of Las Terrenas. That was it! We decided we’d move to the Dominican Republic as soon as possible; the time needed to organize and notify family and friends. What would we do

in Las Terrenas? No idea, we’d see when we got there. Within a few months everything was arranged, and, on January 17, 2005, we touched down intending to settle here for good.

Life in Las Terrenas

Arriving with a small budget, we had to find a business, which turned out to be the BarCar Wash in Plaza Mango, now the main entrance to Plaza Mango. This allowed us to make a living, perfect our Spanish with customers and meet many people. We went on to involve ourselves in a variety of activities in different areas until we came up with the idea of importing fitted kitchens from Europe in 2015.

Why this project? Because we felt this sector was evolving, to diversify the offer that had only one option in Las Terrenas at that time, but above all, because Jérôme Mouysset, a friend who knew Las Terrenas, returned to spend a holiday with Florence, his wife and their two children. They too fell under the spell of Las Terrenas (and bought their holiday home!) and, as they have been kitchen manufacturers for 30 years, they suggested we join forces. They offered me their vast hands-on experience and I offered them my knowledge of the country and the town, which has since grown into a city. So, getting together with Florence and Jérôme led to setting up Hogar Design in a commercial unit in Plaza Mango as our premiere in the Dominican Republic back in 2016. We started with a 40 m² store that soon became too small. These promising beginnings led us to invest in a plot of land and the construction of a 560 m² building to have ample show room and storage spaces, giving us the

drive to complete numerous projects for private clients and developers from all around the world.

The progress continues and we are adding new floors to our building to expand our offer with new products.

What surprised me about living in Las Terrenas?

What has surprised me over these 17 years is how quickly the small fishing village we knew when we arrived has developed into the city and a great economic center it is today. Surprising? Not really, because the bewitching charm of Las Terrenas is such that it couldn’t be otherwise.

Dominicans have an incredible ability to adapt.

Sometimes I miss those early years, but development is ongoing and lately has accelerated, which poses the real challenge of organizing traffic and essential infrastructure for the authorities. This is essential to maintain a good quality of life in Las Terrenas, while integrating the growing population. But there is no doubt that things will go in this direction.

How long with Hogar Design

Over the past 7 years, the company has grown from month to month and attracts new customers from all over the country. In 2022, we were commissioned to install kitchens in La Vega, Santiago, Sosúa, Santo

Domingo as well as Punta Cana. This requires proper organization and logistics, and our ability to adapt has done the rest.

My role in the company

At first, I did everything from A to Z locally, and my partners took care of the production and all the logistics of scheduling, loading, and shipping the containers.

My role began with finding clients, taking measurements on site, or compiling construction plans.

Then come the meetings with the clients to know what they want and need, advice on the choice of materials and colors, drafting the first plans, a second meeting with the client, adjusting the plans and confirmation from the client, ordering the kitchen, managing transport logistics and customs clearance, installing and delivery to the customer. Up to now, I have managed to surround myself with competent people who relieve me of certain logistical tasks and, above all, of installing the units.

Our priority is to satisfy our customers who will then recommend us for new projects. We always respond in the shortest possible time, and we don’t just forget our customers once the kitchen has been delivered.

The difference between Hogar Design and the competition

To be honest, I’m not very interested in competition, and I often see this as a positive trait. We learn from it and try to improve ourselves to provide the best possible service. We strive to select products suitable for the area and offer the widest range of options with continued, quality, long-term service close at hand. We never forget our customers.

Our kitchen brands

As I said in the beginning, my partners have been kitchen designers in France for more than 30 years and they can make all kinds of

kitchens at their 5,000 m² factory, allowing 100% customization beyond what you could imagine. However, we work mainly with German manufacturers, with Haëcker in particular, which has a range especially suitable for the Caribbean climate with exclusive PUResist coating.

What happens to kitchen furniture finishes when exposed to steam? Thanks to our innovative, high-quality PUResist gluing technology, the answer is simple: nothing!

Thanks to a careful selection of wood materials and our suppliers, we were able to convert the entire stock from September 2017, and we only work with wood materials where the formaldehyde content is significantly reduced. The figures are well below the threshold of European standards while strict American standards are met 100%.

We work exclusively with manufacturers who master the most advanced techniques to obtain an optimal quality result. But beyond quality, we can offer you any design for your kitchen. With a range of 232 different front finishes, you will discover the most beautiful combinations of design and functionality that give each kitchen its unique character.

Drawing up the plans

This phase is essential, and we are committed to guiding our customers towards a comfortable functional kitchen. We also know how to take into account our customers’ wishes who quite often they arrive with well-crafted plans and color options. If this is not the case, we have all the samples available in our showroom and you can build your kitchen with confidence.

Average duration of a project

Every project is different and so is every client. On average, there are about 15 days between the first contact and the final design before putting in the order. The manufacturing time in Europe can vary from 4 to 8 weeks depending on the time of year. All European factories close in August and at the end of the year, which allows for the maintenance of machinery and equipment. Then comes a week of logistics, 15 days shipping followed by 7 to 10 days for Dominican customs clearance and delivery to Las Terrenas.

As for installing the kitchen, we are adamant when it comes to the quality of the finish and we take an average of 3 days for the kitchen and one more week to deliver the countertop if it is in granite, quartz or, even more resistant, in Dekton. Dekton is the strongest countertop material known to date. One thing is for sure: we will always be clear about our delivery times.

The future of Hogar Design

First of all, we intend to continue offering our customers the best products and innovations in the field of fitted kitchens. We always try to offer personalized, impeccable service and unmatched customer service.

As I already mentioned, the future of Hogar Design includes expanding our facilities, which is already underway. We will go from 560 m² to 1,040 m². We will double our storage and show room capacity, which will include a new floor dedicated to furniture, also imported from Europe.

The range will be very complete and will include all kinds of sofas, sofa beds, media units, coffee tables, dining tables, beds, mattresses, chairs and armchairs, wardrobes and much more. Work is progressing at a fast pace, and we hope to present this new range in the spring of 2023.
